September 20 - 26, 2009 “If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.” (Ezekiel 33:6, New International Version) Weekly World Watch Andy Walton’s To skip the introductory slides and go straight to this weeks developments click here.
What is a Weekly World Watch? Israel: The continuing conflict in the Middle East and focus on Jerusalem. Europe: Its developing union, both political and religious. Russia: Its return to anti-Western ways as Bible prophecy’s “king of the north.” The UK and the US: Bible prophecy’s “king of the south.” Moral standards in decline and violence on the increase. WWW presentations in PowerPoint can be ordered as audio/visual CDs by clicking here. Move your mouse to place the cursor on the blue link and click.clicking here The idea is simple. It is to look at current events and compare them to events spoken of in the Bible.. I hope to build up a picture of God’s hand working in the affairs of this world. God is bringing about a day when all nations will be gathered to Jerusalem to battle. At that time God will send His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, back to this earth. Jesus will then establish God’s kingdom on earth. This kingdom will last for ever. This is our hope and the reason we watch. Increasing natural disasters: including earthquake, famine etc The following six themes will appear repeatedly in WWW:
HEADLINE EVENT COMMENT News Photo The source of the headline and the date are included. Each WWW looks at a few key developments that have happened during the past week. It is in no way meant to be exhaustive – just a look at those events I saw as significant from a Biblical point of view. What is in a Weekly World Watch? BIBLE QUOTE This is normally one verse which backs up why the event that has occurred is interesting from a Biblical perspective. Please read in its context. Unless stated otherwise, all quotes are from the King James Version. (Book, chapter, and verse) This is straight from a news report that caught my eye because it looked significant from a Biblical perspective, usually that of prophecy. Every WWW event slide has the following format. To reveal each block of text just left click your mouse or press the space bar. You control when it appears. This is the reporter’s description of the event. It is always a direct quotation from the news report and reflects the understanding of the reporter and editors. This is my comment on why the event is interesting to a Bible student. The intention of the WWW is to offer brief Biblical perspectives without going into detail. If more detail is desired, please e-mail me: (firstname.lastname@example.org).

Iran loses its only AWACS This plane that crashed was critical to Iran’s defences. It can detect and distinguish between hostile and friendly aircraft hundreds of miles away. Quite understandably there are those who see the hand of Israel in this – Mossad. Whether this is the case or not we do not know – yet. Whatever the cause, Israel may well see this as an opportunity to strike Iran with greater confidence than before. There are many similarities between Ahmadinejad and Haman (the evil ruler) who lived in the ancient Persian (Iranian) kingdom– they both want to destroy the Jewish people. Up above a big military parade in Tehran on Tuesday, Sept. 22, as Iranian president declared Iran's armed forces would "chop off the hands" of any power daring to attack his country, two air force jets collided in mid-air. One was Iran's only airborne warning and control system (AWACS) for coordinating long-distance aerial operations. The proud military parade, which included a march-past, a line of Shehab-3 missiles and an air force fly-past, was planned to give Ahmadinejad a dazzling send-off for New York and add steel to his UN Assembly speech Wednesday. Dubbed "Simorgh" (a flying creature of Iranian fable which performs wonders in mid- flight), the AWACS' appearance, escorted by fighter jets, was to have been the climax for the Iranian Air force's fly-past over the parade. Instead, it collided with one of escorting planes, and both crashed to the ground in flames. All seven crewmen were killed. Eye witnesses reported that the flaming planes landed on the mausoleum burial site of the Islamic revolution's founder Ruhollah Khomeini, a national shrine. According to Western observers, no distress signals came from either cockpit indicating that the collision and explosions were sudden and fast. Debkafile, September 23, 2009 EVENT COMMENT wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai. BIBLE QUOTE (Esther 3:6)
World leaders fury at Iran’s new nuclear facility This really does ratchet up the tension with Iran. This secret facility that has now been revealed is buried deep under a mountain in Iran. Ahmadinejad insists this is still for peaceful means. We know with Bible in hand it is certainly not. The Bible speaks of the Medes being “stirred up” in the last days before the final judgements of the world. The Bible tells us they will care nothing for silver and gold (capitalist ideas). Economic sanctions will not bother this people at all!! Their “bows” or archers will dash the young men to pieces we are told. In other words they are violent and will use their weapons willingly. They have no pity even on the young. The world is racing towards confrontation – God’s hand is guiding events… Iran concealed the building of a second uranium enrichment plant in defiance of calls for transparency over its nuclear plans, US President Barack Obama says. The leaders of the US, UK and France demanded UN inspectors be given immediate access to the facility. Iran revealed the existence of the plant to the UN watchdog on Monday, saying it was not yet operational and would only be used for nuclear energy. Iranian officials in New York and Tehran denied the plant was a secret. Tehran has previously acknowledged it has one enrichment plant, at Natanz. Iran's decision to build a secret facility represented a "direct challenge to the basic compact" of the global non-proliferation regime, US President Barack Obama said, making a statement in Pittsburgh, where he is hosting a G20 summit. Despite Iran's assertions that the facility was for peaceful purposes, the new plant was "not consistent" with that goal, the US president said. Daily Telegraph, September 26, 2009 EVENT COMMENT Behold, I will stir up the Medes [Iranians] against them, which shall not regard silver; and as for gold, they shall not delight in it. Their bows also shall dash the young men to pieces; and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb BIBLE QUOTE (Isaiah 13:17,18)
Israel 'told Russia it won't launch attack on Iran' Out of the blue Mr Medvedev the Russian president suddenly announces to the world that Israel told him something confidentially last month that we all need to know. Shimon Peres apparently told the Russian President that Israel would not attack Iran. Why would Mr Medvedev find the need now to tell everyone about this conversation? Why has Israel kept stony silence on this statement? The answer could be this. Israel could well be gearing up for conflict with Iran. Russia knows this. How best to prevent Israel from doing this? To announce that Israel have said they will not do it! This is typical deceptive Russian behaviour. It points to the opposite – war is close…. Israel told Russia it would not launch an attack on Iran, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has said, in which he described such an attack as "the worst thing that can be imagined." Mr Medvedev said his Israeli counterpart Shimon Peres made the pledge at a meeting in August. After the meeting Mr Peres said Medvedev had promised to reconsider the sale to Iran of S-300 anti-aircraft systems that would complicate an Israeli attack. Israel has hinted it could forcibly deny Iran the means to make an atom bomb if Tehran continues to refuse to suspend uranium enrichment it claims is for peaceful purposes. "When he visited me in Sochi, Israeli President Peres said something important for us all: 'Israel does not plan to launch any strikes on Iran, we are a peaceful country and we will not do this'," Mr Medvedev told CNN. An attack would lead to "a humanitarian disaster, a vast number of refugees, Iran's wish to take revenge and not only upon Israel, to be honest, but upon other countries as well. Daily Telegraph, September 20, 2009 EVENT COMMENT He will cause deceit to prosper, and he will consider himself superior. When they feel secure, he will destroy many BIBLE QUOTE (Daniel 8:25 NIV)
Summit left the peace process deadlocked Although US president Barack Obama managed to corral Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Mahmoud Abbas in one room at the Waldorf Astoria New York Tuesday, Sept. 22, it was a cold, formal occasion, which in no way hauled the Middle East peace process out of its deep stalemate. Obama went through the motions of inviting the two sides to send teams to Washington next week and asked secretary of state Hillary Clinton to report to him in mid-October on any progress made by envoy George Mitchell in getting negotiations started. But the US president's six months' effort to restart the talks has never taken off. He started out with a broad personal commitment to Middle East peace between Israel, the Palestinians and Lebanon, with much fanfare. His demand for a total construction freeze on Israeli settlement construction quickly proved he had bit off more than he could chew. Debkafile, September 22, 2009 EVENT COMMENT For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. BIBLE QUOTE (1 Thessalonians 5:3) Obama promised to sort out the Middle East conflict. To set up a Palestinian State, to divide Israel in two, to divide Jerusalem. He has got no where at all. In fact despite all the talking of peace a very dangerous vacuum has now developed. Obama led Mr Abbas to believe that Israel would concede on all halting all building work in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Mr Abbas then went public telling the world this was his pre condition for talks with Israel. Israel however has not bent on this at all. This leaves a situation that is almost impossible to save face. Both sides are now entrenched. Into this void may come violence and trouble.
Ehud Olmert - first Israeli PM to appear in court Ehud Olmert will become the first former prime minister of Israel to stand trial when he arrives at a Jerusalem court on Friday to answer corruption charges. A year after mounting scandal forced his resignation, Mr Olmert is expected to deny defrauding a charity for the mentally handicapped and Israel's national Holocaust memorial. He has also rejected an array of other accusations, including breach of trust and tax evasion. The prosecution is expected to call up to 280 witnesses in a trial that activists hope will shed light on what they believe to be systemic corruption at the top level of Israeli politics. So far this month, two former cabinet ministers have begun prison sentences for corruption, while Moshe Katsav, Israel's president until 2007, is standing trial for rape. Daily Telegraph, September 24, 2009 EVENT COMMENT The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. BIBLE QUOTE (Genesis 6:11,12) It is rare in any country to see a former prime minister stand trial. It is all the more saddening to see it in God’s land – Israel. Israel is beset by corruption – and worse. Israel’s ex president is standing trial on rape charges. As the report says two other cabinet ministers have been jailed for corruption as well. We are told by Jesus to look at the world and compare it to Noah’s day. When we see it like this we know that the coming of Christ will be soon. There are two main aspects of the world of Noah as accounted in Genesis. Violence and corruption. Corruption is mentioned three times! God’s judgement was finally “poured” out in the days of Noah. God’s judgement will be poured out on Israel because of the same reasons.
Sydney dust storm 'like Mars' A storm which blew in from the Australian outback blanketed Sydney in a layer of orange dust. Here, residents describe the bizarre and frightening scene. Tanya Ferguson said the dust was the weirdest thing she had seen in her life, turning the city into a scene from another planet. "It was like being on Mars," she told the BBC News website. "I haven't been there, obviously, but I imagine that's what the sky would look like." Andrew Hawkins, who lives in North mead, about 20km from the centre of Sydney, says he was scared at first because it looked like the end of the world. "This morning's dust storm was unbelievable… It was like waking up to see that Armageddon is upon us," he wrote in. Mr Hawkins said he thought his eyes were playing up, or that there had been a nuclear explosion or a bush fire. Another Sydney resident, Kirsty Ainsworth, said it was like being in a film. "It was really, really bizarre. It was actually like being in a movie - the Day After Tomorrow or Armageddon," she said. Associated Press, September 18, 2009 EVENT COMMENT And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: BIBLE QUOTE (Acts 2:19,20) The scenes in Australia this week looked like something from a disaster movie. Jesus says that before he comes back there will be “fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.” Luke 21:11. We look at these pictures and know that God himself is behind these events. Creation is groaning under the strain of sin. As man become more and more godless so the natural world becomes more and more unstable. The 2 elements are linked by God himself. He cursed Adam in 2 ways. He would begin to decay and die because of his sin AND also the planet (the ground) itself would be cursed as well. Gen 3:17-19
