3   Name the 4 levels of educational degrees a person can receive.  What do you think of when you hear the term “Health Care Professional ?” Warm-up

4   Objective(s): The student will be able to describe and explain the various routes of education in order to pursue a career in the health care field. 6  Post Secondary Education  Associate’s Degree  From a community college or vocation/technical school  2 year course of study

7  Post Secondary Education  Bachelor’s Degree  From a college or university  Course of study is 4 or more years

8  Post Secondary Education  Master’s Degree  Course of study 1or more years beyond a bachelor’s degree  Doctorate  Course of study 2 or more years beyond a bachelor’s or master’s degree (sometimes even 4-6 years)

9  Certification, Registration, and Licensure  Purpose  To ensure skill and competency of health care workers and to protect patients

10   Certification is issued if person fulfills requirements of education and performance and meets standards and qualifications established  Not required to work in that career field  Examples: Certified Pediatric Nurse, Certified Dental Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant Certification

11   Authorizes individuals to work in an occupation  Usually require a person to:  Complete an approved educational program  Pass a state board test  Maintain certain standard to obtain and retain licensure  Examples: physicians, dentists, physical therapists, registered nurses Licensure

12   Required in some health careers  Professional/state agencies administer examinations and maintain a current list (the “registry”) of qualified individuals  Examples: registered dietitian, registered nurse Registration

13   Purpose  Ensures that program of study meets established quality competency standards Accrediting Agencies

14   Purpose  Required to renew licenses, maintain certification, or registration  Ex: Registered Nurses must have 20 CEU hours every 2 years Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

15   Aide or assistant  Up to one year of training (classroom and on-the-job training)  Ex: dental, medical, or nursing assistants  Technician  Associate’s degree, or on-the-job training  Ex: dental laboratory technician, surgical technician Training Levels

16   Technologist or Therapist  3-4 years of college (bachelor’s), plus work experience  Ex: Occupational Therapist, Respiratory Therapist  Professional  4 years of college (bachelor’s), and an advanced degree (usually)  Ex: dentist, physician, nurse Training Levels

22  Use scientific and technical advancements to enhance diagnostic and therapeutic abilities in health care SAMPLE CAREERS:  Biomedical Engineer  Creates new machines for the delivery of health care (heart/lung machine, dialysis machine, etc)  Forensic Scientist  Develops new techniques for the examination of bodily evidence involved in a crime BIOTECHNOLOGY RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
