10 The 150 men and 32 volunteers held off Santa Ana’s army for 12 days. On the last day the Mexicans scaled the walls and killed all but three.

13 Later that year Sam Houston led the newly formed Texas Army against Santa Ana outside San Jacinto. To inspire his men he rode his horse through his troops shouting, “Remember the Alamo!” The battle was over in 18 minutes. The Mexican Army was defeated!

14 10 That victory freed Texas from Mexican control and for the next 10 years Texas was an independent nation.

15 On December 29, 1845 Texas joined the United States as our 28 th state.
