Southwark Book Awards 2012 Presenting the titles!

Shadow by Michael Morpurgo This is the story of Aman, as told in his own words – a boy from Afghanistan fleeing the horror of the Afghan war. When a western dog shows up outside the caves where Aman lives with his mother, Aman is initially repulsed – it is not customary for people to keep dogs as pets in his part of the world. But when Aman and his mother finally decide to make a bid for freedom, the dog Aman has called Shadow will not leave their side. Soon it becomes clear: the destinies of boy and dog are linked, and always will be…

The Donut Diaries by Anthony McGowan A British Diary of a Wimpy Kid, featuring Dermot, an overweight eleven-year-old. Hilariously funny and insightful. Dermot Milligan's got problems. He's overweight and hooked on donuts. He has a pushy, over- achieving mother, and a father who spends all his time hiding in the loo. His sisters, Ruby and Ella (known as Rubella) attack him relentlessly from the opposite directions of Chav and Goth. And now, he's being sent to a nutritionist, Doctor Morlock, who looks like a Dementor from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. This diary is Doc Morlock's idea.

Brave New Girl by Catherine Johnson "I can make things happen - good things - I know it!"Seren is so full of brilliant ideas - it's just that she always seems to put her foot in it! First there was the dance routine where she fell off the stage. And now her plan to get her sister Sasha noticed by gorgeous Luke Beckford looks like it could backfire… Seren reckons she's just hopelessly accident-prone! But there's one person who believes in Seren. Her mate Keith is making a film for a national competition and he wants Seren to be in it. Could Seren turn out to be a star after all? This is a funny, big-hearted story with a lovable heroine who will make you laugh and cry.

The Brilliant World of Tom Gates by L. Pichon Tom Gates is the master of excuses for late homework: dog attacks, spilt water, lightning.. Tom's exercise book is full of his doodles, cartoons and thoughts, as well as comments from his long-suffering teacher, Mr Fullerton. After gaining five merits for his CAMPING SUCKS holiday story, Tom's work starts to go downhill, which is a pity, as he's desperate to impress Amy Porter, who sits next to him...

Short Too! by Kevin Crossley-Holland This book is brimming with short stories to make you grasp and quake. Stories to make you laugh or smile. Stories to read out loud and remember. Feel free to read one quickly while washing your face or cleaning your teeth!

Zero to Hero by Rob Childs Simon - Zero to his older brothers - would rather be watching for kingfishers down at the river with his dog Tilly than playing football. But when they drag him along to the park to help with goal- shooting practice, they discover that he has a natural talent for goalkeeping. The school team already has a goalkeeper, albeit one who lets in more goals than he saves, so there seems little chance Simon will get a game. But as the cup final approaches, tension in the team mounts and Simon teams up with new boy Ollie, who has come from the opposing school, and soon the pair are making an impression in practices. Will they be selected for the crucial game, and will Ollie be able to stand up to the tactics of his former schoolmates? This gripping story will entrance all young football lovers, as well as raising issues of bullying and self-esteem.
