2 Timothy 2:1 You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. Four generations:  Paul→  Timothy→  Faithful Men→  Others

“the things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses ” 1.the testimony of our Lord (1x) 2.the treasure (good deposit) entrusted to you (1x) 3.sound words (1x), the word of God (1x), the word of truth (1x), the word (1x) 4.my / our teaching (2x), instruction (1x), sound doctrine (1x) 5.all Scripture (1x), the sacred writings (1x) 6.the gospel (4x) 7.the truth (5x)

Original deposit of truth from his mother and grandmother: 2Tim 1:5 For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well. 2Tim 3:15 and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Then chosen by Paul to accompany him: Acts 15:41 …he [Paul] was traveling through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches. 16:1 Paul came also to Derbe and to Lystra. And a disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek, 2 and he was well spoken of by the brethren who were in Lystra and Iconium. 3 Paul wanted this man to go with him; and he took him…

Acts 20:17 …[Paul] sent to Ephesus and called to him the elders of the church. 18 …he said to them, "You yourselves know, from the first day that I set foot in Asia, how I was with you the whole time, 19 serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials which came upon me through the plots of the Jews; 20 how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you publicly and from house to house, 21 solemnly testifying to both Jews and Greeks of repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. … 23 …the Holy Spirit solemnly testifies to me in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions await me. 24 But I do not consider my life of any account as dear to myself, so that I may finish my course and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify solemnly of the gospel of the grace of God. …

26 …I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men. 27 For I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose of God. … 31 …be on the alert, remembering that night and day for a period of three years I did not cease to admonish each one with tears. 32 And now I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. 33 I have coveted no one's silver or gold or clothes. 34 You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my own needs and to the men who were with me. 35 In everything I showed you that by working hard in this manner you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.‘ "

Active evangelism 20 how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you publicly and from house to house, 21 solemnly testifying to both Jews and Greeks of repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. … 26 Therefore, I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men.

Teaching the entire Bible 27 For I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose of God. … 32 And now I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.

Sacrificial lifestyle / no greedy, earthly motives for ministry 33 I have coveted no one's silver or gold or clothes. 34 You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my own needs and to the men who were with me. 35 "In everything I showed you that by working hard in this manner you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'

Willingness to suffer 19 serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials which came upon me through the plots of the Jews; … 23 …the Holy Spirit solemnly testifies to me in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions await me. 24 But I do not consider my life of any account as dear to myself, so that I may finish my course and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify solemnly of the gospel of the grace of God.

Training others to do the same things 28 Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.

No ‘quick fix’! 31 …be on the alert, remembering that night and day for a period of three years I did not cease to admonish each one with tears.

“these entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also” Key: faithful. Gifting is common; faithfulness is rare! 1 Timothy 3 / Titus 1 requirements for elder/overseer/pastor: Sole gifting listed is ‘able to teach’; rest is godly character

Role distinction #1: Not all of us are gifted to be teachers James 3:1 Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment. All of us must share what we do know / do what we are able: Evangelize, pray, live a pure life, sympathize, help out… Take ‘em to church, small group, prayer meeting… Follow up on their quiet times, scripture memorization, temptations…

Role distinction #2: There are male/female role diffences. 1 Timothy 2:12 But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. Christian women may: evangelize to anyone if gifted, teach other women and children in general, can formally teach and disciple all females and underage males in truth of scripture in particular, older women should teach younger women about proper, modest dress; sexual purity; being a godly Christian wife; godly motherhood.

2 Timothy 2:1 You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. Be strong because: 1. Importance, seriousness of what’s been entrusted to you—you’ll answer for it! 2. Rewared being offered to you—you are entrusting your obedience to God, He’ll repay it! 3. Above all: GRACE

By GRACE you have: 1.unconditional love from all eternity 2.plan to save and sanctify you before you were born 3.forgiveness from the moment you believed and repented 4.continuing forgiveness, forbearance 5.abundant resources available to you: spirit of power, love, self-control (2Tim 1:7) sound words, pure truth which God has allowed you to know (2Tim 1:13) Holy Spirit within you (2Tim 1:14)
