While the amount of data and the number of users requiring access to the data is growing at an accelerating rate, the AMS2000 products are designed to scale performance, capacity and connectivity to meet these challenges. A single system can grow to nearly half a Petabyte and performance can scale to nearly 90,000 IOPS as measured by our recording breaking SPC-1 benchmark results. In today’s environment it’s critical that the cost savings realized from a storage system purchase enable a rapid ROI. The AMS2000 achieves this in a number of ways. A single system can be connected to a maximum of 4096 servers to consolidate the data on multiple storage systems into one. Our Power Savings option can spin down disk drives when not needed to save energy costs. Also, the systems have intelligence build in to eliminate many of the complex and time consuming tasks that administrators routinely face. Each system has a completely redundant set of components, most of which are hot swappable should a failure occur. Additional capabilities like online microcode updates allow the minimization of planned downtime. Built-in Intelligence The highly intelligent controllers are not only easy to operate but also eliminate many manual tasks such as load balancing between the controllers. This not only reduces the chances for performance bottlenecks but also allows administrators more time to spend on higher value tasks. The controller is designed to allow any host port to accept I/O for any LUN w/o a performance penalty for accessing through the “wrong” port. If the workload becomes imbalanced between the two controllers, the system will automatically move workload around to fix the imbalance without any user intervention. First, let’s review our unique differentiators in virtualized server environments. Many customers are deploying server virtualization technology to save money through better utilization of their server resources. However, if they aren’t careful, they can create a complex and expanded storage environment that offsets those cost savings. (click) Configuring primary and fail-over paths for every server is time consuming. The symmetric active/active controller removes need to ensure that every volume is owned by the controller that is on the primary path to that volume. This makes is much quicker and easier to set-up and configure storage for an application. It also makes it fail-safe to use Vmotion to transfer virtual machines between physical servers. (click) Inconsistent workloads can place large demands on a few drives in a single RAID group. Dynamic provisioning smoothes the I/O patterns to provides more consistency and eliminate drive hot spots that degrade performance. (click) Customers are using the round robin feature in Vmware to improve their server performance by balancing the workload across multiple HBAs. Without a dynamic load balancing controller, a performance bottleneck can arise at the controller which would require manual intervention to fix. The AMS2000 manually corrects these problems. (click) Server virtualization helps customers save money by consolidating their servers through better resource utilization. (click) Storage management for Exchange is a dynamic environment where administrators need to manage an increasing number of mailboxes with evolving levels of performance requirements. To cope with this, they sometimes need to move mailboxes to different drives to add mailbox capacity or improve performance. With Dynamic Provisioning it’s much easier to add capacity to existing mailboxes or create new mailboxes with requiring any mailbox moves. Performance can be optimized since the data is spread across the entire storage pool rather than across a few drives. (click) With Exchange, workloads can shift in large swings as users become very active at various times of the day in unpredictable ways. Maintaining response times during heavy and shifting patterns of access is a difficult manual process with other storage systems. The Dynamic Load Balancing controller automatically reassigns storage workloads to eliminate these performance bottlenecks when they occur in order to avoid application timeouts. (click) Backup and replication operations place additional demands on storage and server resources. In-system Exchange backup and snapshot support through Windows VSS used in combination with Symantec Backup Exec reduces backup windows to seconds/minutes so that the impact within Exchange production environments is minimal. Problem: Database capacity and performance requirements continually grow while storage budgets are flat or declining Size databases Dynamic provisioning Add capacity and optimize performance Consolidate storage for databases with other applications Host groups Databases sit at the lifeblood of any business and their capacity and performance requirements continue to grow and grow. (click) For DBAs estimating how much storage will be required when initially sizing new databases is difficult. Dynamic Provisioning eases the task by allowing them to add virtual storage rather than dedicated physical storage. This dramatically increases storage utilization by reducing need to overprovision. (click) DBAs also need to easily add performance to databases or individual components such as tables, indexes or filegroups. Dynamic provisioning allows LUNs to be striped over every drive in the storage pool so that performance is improved sufficiently to meet the SLAs. Also, database tables, files and fast recovery areas have different performance requirements. With a choice of SAS and SATA disks in an AMS2000, performance can be optimized. (click) Many customers are looking to reduce their costs by consolidating all of their storage requirements into a limited number of systems. As a result databases may be consolidated onto systems with other applications. By setting up host groups, an administrator can separately partition applications so that performance demands of the databases aren’t compromised by other applications.
