Facts on population ● EU25 population will continue to rise until 2025 and then start to fall (Eurostat) ● Working age population expected to decrease by 52 million by 2050 (Eurostat) – EU needs 75 million immigrants by (Eurostat) – 2050.(French interior ministry, 2002)
Arguments FOR immigration ● Aging population ● Immigrants are ready to accept jobs that are ignored by current population (shit jobs) ● Immigrants help their families in third world countries (send money etc.) ● Immigration can help boost economic growth
Arguments AGAINST immigration ● There is already unemployment ● Most immigrants are unskilled and -educated ● GDP per capita may fall when population grows ● Competition on the labour market reduces wages and may worsen working conditions
Current policies and practises ● On national level – Many countries are imposing stricter policies (mandatory language exams etc.) – Protection against illegal immigration (Spain, Italy, France) – Need for labour ● On european level – Tampere agenda, aim to unify immigration policies – Regional differences: problems are worst for Spain, Italy and France.
