Nahjul Balaaghah about Benu Umayya By A.S. Hashim. MD

In the Name of God, Lord of Mercy and Lord of Grace

Nahjul Balaaghah Nahjul Balaaghah, a highly valued book, consists of: – 254 sermons, – 48 letters, and – 212 sayings of Imam Ali Nahjul Balaaghah is unique to Imam Ali None of the Sahaaba was ever able to produce anything like it: 1. neither in substance 2. nor in literary eloquence. No wonder Ali was referred to as: 1. Sayyid al-Bulaghaa' (Pinnacle of Literary Expression) and 2. Sayyid al-Fu'qahaa, (Pinnacle of the Jurisprudents)

References about Benu Umayya Nahjul Balaaghah contains 7 references about Benu Umayya, some of which appear here The quotes appear in various sermons, –said at variable occasions and –about different subjects. 1. 5 Time Element The majority of Ali's sayings and speeches were stated: –During his Khilaafah when in Kufa, –At Different Places –At Different Occasions –Often at Khutba of Jumu’ah

In Sermon 93, Page 137 Ali: about the mischief mongers of Benu Umayya Ali delivered this sermon after the battle of Nahrawan. He mentions the malice of the sedition of Benu Umayya. 7 In Sermon 93, Ali: about the mischief mongers of Benu Umayya Lo! Seditions confuse the right with wrong, but afterwards they leave a warning. Seditions cannot be known when they approach but are recognized at the time of return, just like winds blowing, striking some cities and missing others. Beware that the worst Sedition for you (in my view) is that of Benu Umayya, whose malice is blindly dark, whose sway is widespread and its ill- effects are for specific people. Very distressed will be the one who recognizes it, and at ease will be the one who does not see it.

In Sermon 93, Ali: about the mischief mongers of Benu Umayya By Allah, you will find Benu Umayya (after me) the worst people to deal with, just like an unruly camel biting, beating with its fore- legs, kicking with its hind legs, and refusing to be milked. Benu Umayya will persist till they leave only those who benefit them or of no harm to them. Their adversity would continue till your asking help from them becomes like a slave seeking help from his master, or the laborer from his superior. Benu Umayya’s mischief would come like a feared evil or Jahiliyah practice, wherein there is no minaret of guidance nor a perception to be seen.

In Sermon 98, Page 143 Ali: about Oppression of Benu Umayya Ali gives in depth analysis of the oppression ahead of the people if Benu Umayya take charge of the Islamic Ummah. See next slide please Other sources: 1. Ibn Qutaybah, al-'Imamah, I, 151; 2. Sibt, Tadhkirah, 100; 3. al-Mufid, al-'Irshad, 157.

In Sermon 98, Ali: about Oppression of Benu Umayya By Allah, Benu Umayya would continue till they make the unlawful as lawful, and no pledge but broken, and no house or tent but oppressed. They will continue so till two sections of crying complainers rise, one cries for its religion and one for its livelihood. And until your aiding to one of them is like a slave aiding his master, when his master is present he obeys him, but when the master is away he backbites him. And until the highest among you in distress is the one whose belief in Allah is best. So, if Allah grants you safety do welcome it, and if you are put in harms way do endure it, surely the end result is for the God-fearing.

In Sermon 108, Page 156 Ali: about the vicissitude of time Ali’s sermon about the vicissitude of time whereby he also describes Mu’awiya and his rule in a compelling detail. Part of this sermon is quoted in the following slide: See next slide please Other sources: 1. Al-'Amidi, Ghurar, 85, 209; 2. al-Zamakhshari, Rabi`, I, bab tabaddul al-'ahwal.

In Sermon 108, Ali: about the vicissitude of time Misguidance has taken center stage and has spread all around; it is heavy in weight and measurable in the confusion it produced. Its leader (Mu’awiya) is a castaway from the norm, he would persist on misguidance, Until: From among you none would remain but the pitiful and the murky. The misguidance would scrape you as leather is scraped, and trample you as harvest is trampled, And the misguidance will: Pick out the believer as a bird picks out a large grain from the small ones.

In Sermon 158, Page 223 Ali: About autocracy of Benu Umayya The sermon was about the Holy Quran and the Prophet (pbuh). In part of this sermon Ali also details the autocracy of Benu Umayya. See next slide please Other sources: 1. Ibn al-'Athir, al-Nihayah, (`a.dh.r, m.q.r and n.kh.m) I, 46, III, 198, IV, 347, V, 34; 2. al-Kulayni, Rawdah, 62; 3. al-Mufid, al-'Irshad, 173.

In Sermon 158, Ali: About autocracy of Benu Umayya About Benu Umayya’s Rule: At that time oppression would inflict every house or tent with grief and sickness in it. By then none in Heaven would listen to their excuse, nor anyone on the earth come to their aid. You selected a misfit for the Khilaafah, and raised him to a seat not meant for him. Shortly Allah will take revenge from the oppressor, food for food and drink for drink, bitter is their eating, horrid is the drinking, and fright is their inners, and the sword for an outer cover. They are but beasts laden with sins and camels laden with evil deeds. I swear and again swear that Benu Umayyad will have to spit out the Khilaafah as phlegm is, and then they will never taste it nor relish it so long as day and night rotate.

In Sermon 166, Page 240 Ali: About the oppression of Benu Umayya and their fate The sermon was about advice for observing courtesy and kindness and keeping in and out of the same. In part of this sermon Ali also details the haughtiness of Benu Umayya. See next slide please Other sources: 1. Kitab Sulaym ibn Qays, 89; 2. al-Kulayni, Rawdah, 62; 3. al-Mufid, al-'Irshad, 373; 4. Ibn al-'Athir, al-Nihayah, I, 46.

In Sermon 166, Ali: About the oppression of Benu Umayya and their fate Have divided after their unity and dispersed from their roots, some sticking to branches and bending as the branches bend. Then Allah, the Sublime, will gather them for the worst day of Benu Umayya, just as the scattered bits of clouds fuse in the autumn. Then Allah will open gates from which to flow out like the gates of the two gardens of Saba' (whereby neither boulders remained safe nor small hillocks, and whose flow could not be repulsed by mountains nor high lands). Allah will scatter them in the valleys and then make them flow like streams of the earth. He would arrange through them taking rights of one people and enable one people to take over others. By Allah, all their position and esteem will dissolve as fat dissolves on the fire.
