Bullying Prevention Central High School Counseling Department Lance Allred, Andy Prewitt, Tanya Ayers, Tranese Nelms, Kimberly Gray, Kandice Shorter
What is Bullying? Aggressive behavior that intends to cause harm or distress Repeated offenses over time Occurs in a relationship where there is an imbalance of power or strength
Types of Bullying Direct Bullying – Hitting, kicking, shoving, spitting – Taunting, teasing, racial slurs, verbal harassment, and sexual comments – Threatening Indirect bullying – Spreading rumors – Cyber-bullying
Intervention and Prevention Never ignore bullying; always address the problem Involve parents when necessary Refer students, and enforce school policies consistently Report incidents Talk to the bully and person being bullied separately Impose consequences for the children who bully – this is best done at the administrative level
Bullying is… …against SCS policy, is against what Central High students should stand for, and will not be tolerated. Please report bullying as soon as possible to an Administrator, Counselor, or Teacher.

The Six Principles of Kingian Nonviolence The philosophy of nonviolence, as espoused by Martin Luther King, Jr., is articulated in the “Six Principles of Nonviolence," which synthesize the basic tenets of his thinking.
Principle One: Nonviolence is a way of life for courageous people. It is active, nonviolent resistance to evil. Principle Two Nonviolence seeks to build community. The end of nonviolence is reconciliation.
Principle Three Nonviolence seeks to defeat injustice, not people. Principle Four Nonviolence holds that suffering can educate and transform. It accepts suffering without retaliation. It accepts violence, if necessary, but will never inflict it. It willingly accepts the consequences of its acts.
Principle Five Nonviolence chooses love instead of hate. It resists violence of the spirit as well as physical violence. It holds that love is active, not passive; spontaneous, unmotivated, unselfish, creative, and un-ending in its ability to forgive in order to restore community and defeat injustice. Principle Six Nonviolence - belief that the universe is on the side of justice.

What You Should Do: 1. Point out to the students that bullying is wrong, against policy, and will not be tolerated. Please post the Bullying notification. 2. Discuss with your students the information presented here about nonviolence as espoused by Dr. King.
