The Problem of Evil and Suffering

The problem?  Qualities that the Christian God is said to possess:-  Omnipotent  Omniscient  Omni benevolent  Omnipresent  Almighty  Creator  Father……………..Yet…Evil and suffering exists!

Possible Solutions?  A possible solution to the problem of evil and suffering is called a Theodicy.  Traditionally, there are said to be Four main Theodicy's  They are:-  The Augustinian Theodicy  The Irenaean Theodicy  Dualism Theodicy  Despotism Theodicy

Which one best answers the problem?  Augustine lays the blame for evil and suffering firmly with Adam and Eve  Irenaeus says we are in a ‘vale of soul making’ and evil and suffering is in our world to make us better people  Dualism suggests that another power might be responsible for suffering and evil in the world – the Devil, Lucifer or Satan  Despotism says that Gods actions are way beyond our understanding because he is so superior to us.

Problems with the Theodicy’s?  Would a good and loving God continue to punish us for Adam and Eve’s sin in the Garden of Eden?  Although God is said to have given us free will and this sits nicely with the views of Irenaeus, there have been some truly awful tragedies for God to inflict on his creation to make us learn a lesson  Could there really be another ‘ultimate’ force at work in our world like the devil?  Is the God of the Christian belief really so far above our small intellect that he wouldn’t allow us to question, let alone understand his actions?
