Master’s thesis: interim presentation 2 Vital D’haveloose Promotor: prof. Erik Duval Mentor: Robin De Croon

Contents Definition  Title, problem, goal Recap Activities  iterations  result (demo) Reflection Statistics  Blog activity, read papers, hours worked Looking ahead  Real life test  Coordination  Planning 2

Definition\ Title and problem Title: " Integration of online tools for working together on projects” Problem = research question: “How can we support collaboration, communication and coordination* for teams of students that work on projects?” 3 * 3C’s: Groupware: some issues and experiences (Ellis, Gibbs and Rein, 1991)

Definition\ Goal First piece: communication  “What did we say about that again?”-problem  Part of the solution: semi-automatically create summaries of chat- sessions With tags and structure, e.g.:  UI: chat with fast and easy addition of tags and structure  Rationale: Grierson’s recommendations* Second piece: coordination  See later… 4 * Detailed empirical studies of student information storing in the context of distributed design team-based project work (Grierson, 2013)

Recap\ Prototype first presentation 5

Activities\ Iteration 4 (too) small question: click or hover to trigger message menu?  speed  discoverability general usability Results (N = 6)  SUS score = 80 Conclusion  click for menu  hover for submenu’s 6 film, measure time later  SUS AgeSe x Studies 23MMa. 7 Activities\ Christmas break hard coded credentials windows to enter users credentials 7

Activities\ Iteration 5 Group evaluation  3 groups of 3 students  install, configure, chat, SUS, discuss  afterwards: questionnaire Results (N = 9)  bugs, bugs, bugs   SUS configuration = 53  SUS chat = 48  questionnaire 8 9 pizza’s

Activities\Iteration 5\ Conclusions nobody knows OneNote  no problem: testers can install it SUS configuration is low  no problem: not focus SUS chat is low  problem  solution (based on remarks): better stability (less bugs) higher speed, less clicking more clarity (message menu) tags, structure and conversation report are considered valuable 10

Activities\Iteration 6\ Prototype 11

Activities\Iteration 6\ Evaluation General usablility Time to add message? Meaning of structure in report? Results  SUS score = 60 Conclusions  automatic answered message unclear  unclear how to add new root  problems with message menu (click/hover)  unclear structure in report 12 AgeSe x Studies 23MMa. 13 Activities\Iteration 7\ Prototype 13

Activities\Iteration 7\ Prototype (bis) 14 use keyboard symbols to add tag (i.e. “:)”, “?”, …) to select message to answer to  use Ctrl+↑/↓  click on icon in message tree Demo

Activities\Iteration 7\ Evaluation 15 Ongoing Results look promising  SUS of 77 for N = 4

Reflection 16  Communication took A LOT more time than planned Recent result look good, but simple for the time spent   12/20

Statistics\ Blog and read papers LARAe entry:  32 blogposts  38 comments Read papers: TiNYARM profile  10 papers read  8 papers skimmed 17

Statistics\ Time spent per week 18

Statistics\ Time spent per category 19

Looking ahead\ Real life test to coordinators of 23 project courses…  KU Leuven: P&O’s, Swarch, OGP, OSS, …  Groep T: Engineering Experience, Beyond Engineering … asking them to forward a message (included in the mail) to their students. Students install, configure, use and evaluate the application  lot of effort  reward: lottery with some (geeky) prizes Also, obviously, invites via social media (FB and Twitter) 20

Looking ahead\ Coordination 21 Communication took a lot more time than expected  Coordination will be ‘small’ First idea: Logging + real time awareness  Toggle integration, real time view of who is doing what, automatically logged (to e.g. embedded Excel file) Second idea: Centralized notifications area  on a page in OneNote itself (no extra window)  using notifications from e.g. Facebook, Dropbox, Slack, …
