ASI Review Padova Scientific Activities 1 WP6200 : Padova Scientific Activities Staff Alberto Franceschini (AF) & Gianfranco De Zotti (GDZ) [Full Professors] Giulia Rodighiero (GR) & Mattia Vaccari (MV) [Research Fellows] Gabriele Mainetti (GM) & Elena Ricciardelli (ER) & Svetlana Starikova (SS) [PhD Students] WP 6200.1 - Partecipazione alla definizione dei GT KP e survey associate WP 6200.2 – Preparazione dei programmi osservativi da svolgere in GT WP 6200.3 – Sviluppo di algoritmi di riduzione dati e di modelli teorici WP 6200.4 – Riduzione dati e analisi risultati

ASI ReviewPadova Scientific Activities2 Long-Wavelength Cosmological Surveys in the Era of the Great Observatories Padova has been involved into long-wavelength studies of extragalactic populations since the 1980s and has consistently contributed to large-area survey projects carried out with IRAS, ISO, Spitzer and now Herschel SWIRE ~ 50 ☐ 2 SWIRE Fields : Observed by Spitzer & to be observed by Herschel GT KPs

ASI ReviewPadova Scientific Activities3 The Cosmic Star Formation History at 0<z<2.5 MIR & Bolometric Luminosity Functions from MIPS 24 μm samples IR Luminosity Density (i.e. Star Formation Rate) vs redshift Data drawn from most popular “Cosmic Windows” : GOODS + VVDS/SWIRE Rodighiero et al. (in prep)

ASI ReviewPadova Scientific Activities4 SWIRE to HERMES : Large Areas & Cosmic Variance Vaccari et al. (in prep) MIR & FIR Number Counts over 5- 10 deg2 areas fully reveal the impact of cosmic variance 24 μ m Local Luminosity Function Red Dots – Rodighiero et al. (in prep) GOODS+VVDS/SWIRE ~ 1 deg 2 Black Dots – Marchetti (Tesi di Laurea) SWIRE/SDSS ~ 10 deg 2 Black Solid Line – Models by Franceschini et al. (in prep) Large areas are crucial in pinpointing local properties of strongly-evolving populations

ASI ReviewPadova Scientific Activities5 Spectroscopic Observations of FIR Sources at 0<z<0.5  Large areas and high source densities call for additional optical spectroscopy  Several projects are underway, in collaboration with IAC (Tenerife) and Imperial College (London), mostly targeting 0<z<0.5 objects with the aim of improving constraints on the local luminosity function of SWIRE/HERMES objects Planning for Nov 2008 observing run 600 spectra for SWIRE 70 μ m sources and/or X-ray sources in XMMLSS field Observing runs were: - executed (~500 objects) - approved (~600) - proposed (~1000/1500)

ASI ReviewPadova Scientific Activities6 Preparing for PEP & HERMES (SPIRE GT KP)  AF models of extragalactic populations presented in Franceschini et al. (in prep) were invaluable in the planning of and in predicting the results of PEP & HERMES  GR studies of MIR & Bolometric Luminosity Functions will pave the way to similar FIR & sub-mm studies which PEP & HERMES will carry out over 0<z<3 and beyond  MV is responsible for the implementation of multi-wavelength cross-correlation software within the pipeline and for the characterization of the survey selection function, critical aspects in making sense of HERMES statistical observables Background fluctuations due to faint unresolved sources place a fundamental limit to the sensitivity of Herschel observations AF models were thus used to compute the amplitude of these fluctuations, so as to optimize the sensitivities of the various fields making up PEP & HERMES
