TRADITIONAL AND NON – TRADITIONAL ROLES Traditional: all naval tasks and capabilities on Above Water and Under Water Warfare since the beginning of World War II till the last one or two decades

TRADITIONAL AND NON – TRADITIONAL ROLES Non - Traditional: all tasks which may be assigned to Naval units but cannot be labeled as inherent to them and provide a rather new dimension to modern warfare

THE THREAT POSED BY THE LIBYAN REGIME

NON – COMBATANT EVACUATION OPERATIONS Hundreds of Greek and thousands of Chinese nationals evacuated by means provided by the Hellenic Republic

POWER PROJECTION FROM THE SEA Tomahawks and land strikes from carrier- based attack helicopters and fighters

ARMS EMBARGO Inbound commercial shipping had to be monitored, hailed, and in case of credible intelligence, intercepted, boarded and inspected

NAVAL GUN FIRE SUPPORT The dynamic environment in the littorals asks for modern weaponry, in terms of long range and accuracy of fires, a precondition which is not met by many Navies

MINE COUNTERMEASURES OPERATIONS Mine Warfare has been and is expected to remain one of the most challenging tasks in the foreseeable future

MINE COUNTERMEASURES OPERATIONS Interrupting or even forbidding international shipping through the Straits of Hormuz would have destabilizing effects on international economy and industry

SUBMARINE OPERATIONS Compilation of Recognized Maritime Picture No SSK threat posed by the Libyan regime

SAR OPERATIONS Saving lives at risk is paramount for the Commanding Officer and a fundamental function of our common naval “genetic code”

SUMMARY OF MAIN POINTS Traditional roles” : all the inherent tasks on Above Water and Under Water Warfare the Navies have been conducting over the last decades and should be more or less preserved Austerity and shrinking defense expenditures exert pressure on states which may ultimately lead to the abandonment of traditional capabilities.

CLOSING STATEMENT The Hellenic Navy is determined to preserve core traditional capabilities that are deemed critical for the accomplishment of its main mission. In parallel, we will always be prepared and stand ready to fulfill commitments stemming from our cooperation with international and allied partners “High end” capabilities generally have “low end” applicability – the opposite is not true
