© Universal Lighting Technologies | 2 Introduction to Sensors An occupancy sensor is a control device that detects occupancy and turns lighting (or other equipment) on or off automatically. Occupancy sensors continue to rank among the most popular component for lighting control solutions on the market today. Turning lights on only when needed, and off when not needed, just makes sense.
© Universal Lighting Technologies | 3 Introduction to Sensors There are multiple types of lighting occupancy sensor technologies: 1)Passive Infrared (PIR): Contains a detection element in the which senses infrared energy. The technology segments the lens between the detector and the coverage area and breaks the “field of view” into narrow segments. When a heat producing body enters a segment, or passes from one segment and into another, occupancy is detected. The lens is carefully designed and matched with the detector to optimize recognition of human presence and motion within the target coverage area. 2)Ultrasonic: Detects occupancy by emitting a high-frequency signal that is interpreted as motion when frequency changes. These sensors don’t need a direct line of sight since they can “sense” motion around a corner. 3)ADI-Voice: Contains an element that detects audio and applies signal processing technology to analyze sounds and recognize human voices. Used in applications where movements may be small but voice sounds may be sufficient to prevent false tripping. This technology is combined with a PIR sensor where PIR detection is required to initially close the contacts. 4)Dual Tech: Combines PIR and a second technology to reduce inadvertent turn-on and turn-off events.
© Universal Lighting Technologies | 4 The CENTO™ Family Universal Lighting Technologies, Inc. recently expanded its product portfolio by introducing the CENTO™ line of occupancy sensors and vacancy sensors. The name CENTO™ represents the joining together of control with multiple energy efficient lighting technologies (CENTO™ Connects Energy Nodes To maximize energy savings and performance). The initial CENTO™ line includes: PIR wall-switch sensors, ceiling sensors and power packs. Functional options are diverse, from basic to feature-rich. Voltage options include line-voltage (120/277VAC & 347VAC) and low-voltage (24VAC pulse). © Universal Lighting Technologies | 5 CENTO™ Benefits Easy to Install. Simple configuration using dials and DIP switches. Products are small in size. Energy Efficient. Perfect for an energy efficient lighting solution. Reduces lighting energy costs by turning lights on when needed and off when not needed. Wide Application. (see page 14 & 15). Ideal for spaces with irregular occupancy patterns and changing amounts of natural daylight. Family includes 347 volt. Cost-Effective. Sensors pay for themselves quickly, even without rebates. But utility rebates may be available to support sensor purchases. Control. Some models have photo sensors which inhibit turn-on when adequate natural light is available. Some have photo sensors with a 0-10V dimming function for daylight harvesting. Some have an auxiliary relay for coordinating with local HVAC equipment, fans, etc. And low-voltage sensors have a 'sensor- link' function, which coordinates multiple sensors to extend the coverage area. Technology. Passive infrared sensing optimizes recognition of human presence and motion in the coverage area. Photo sensing exploits natural daylight, providing additional energy savings when enough ambient light is available. Dependable. With proper placement, the range of PIR sensors is precise and dependable. Ceiling mount sensors are available with multiple coverage patterns. And, wall-switch sensors have a hardened lens to resist damage from vandalism. Adjustable. Sensitivity settings help reduce false triggers. Easy to switch between possible automatic, manual, and override functions (occupancy (auto-on/auto-off) & vacancy (manual-on/auto-off) sensors). Ceiling sensors feature adjustable lenses for standard, extended & high-bay sensing ranges. Aesthetic Appeal. All sensors are recessed and have a very low profile. Color variations are available for wall-switch models, and Universal can provide recommendations for matching wall plates.

© Universal Lighting Technologies | 14 Switch Mount Operations CENTO™ line voltage sensors draw control power directly from the lighting circuit they are intended to control. When in operation the sensor will detect initial motion using Passive Infrared (PIR); once motion is detected, the internal contact will close. Motion through PIR is used to maintain the occupied condition as long as occupants remain within coverage range and line of sight of sensor. Low voltage sensors obtain 24VAC control power from a CENTO power pack. Sensing and control functions are similar to line voltage sensors, but without an internal contact. Instead, a directional control pulse is returned to the power pack to open or close its internal relay. “P” Models use the photo sensor to prevent contact closure when natural daylight is sufficient.

© Universal Lighting Technologies | 17 Line Ceiling Mount Sensor Wiring Sensor Location Guidelines To optimize the performance of CENTO Sensors, please review the coverage pattern, range, and model to match with the application. Room dynamics will change when people and furniture are occupying the space. In some rooms, after move in, some sensors may require adjustments. Ensure that the sensor is at least 30 inches away from air handlers/registers and not pointed directly at windows Sensor Location Guidelines for models with photo sensors Place outside the direct cone of light from fixtures and between 3 to 12 feet from a window As close as possible to the fixture being controlled Above the least illuminated space in the work area Away from lighting that is not being controlled by the sensor (Both poles should be operated from the same circuit)
