CHAPTER THREE 1984 by George Orwell, Part Three
CHAPTER PREVIEW Winston’s reintegration process continues. O’Brien gives him a ton of information at the beginning, saying that the Party is indestructible, the Party will succeed indefinitely because it controls everything (basically the human mind), and the Party will be rid of all enemies because anything similar to what Winston has done will be abolished. O’Brien views the future to be a hateful and humiliating world. O’Brien makes Winston look in the mirror to search for a picture of “humanity.”
CHAPTER PREVIEW CONT’D… Winston freaks out over how much he’s aged and how creepily crooked his spine is. Winston lashes Back at O’Brien when he refers to his image as “the last man,” and that’s when O’Brien realizes that Winston has yet to betray Julia. Regardless, it doesn’t matter because everyone gets shot in the end, but ye figures he might as well play it safe and destroy the last loyalty that Winston has held onto.

ITEMS/IDEAS TO KNOW Re-education Holding a desire to hate Big Brother until the final moments The power of the subconscious
QUOTES “Hatred would fill him like an enormous roaring flame. And almost in the same instant bang! Would go the bullet, too late or too early. They would have blown his brain to pieces before they could reclaim it. The heretical thought would be unpunished, unrepented, out of their reach forever. They would have blown a hole in their own perfection. To die hating them, that was freedom.
QUOTES CONT’D “Merely to be alone, not to be beaten or questioned, to have enough to eat, and to be clean all over, was satisfying.” “He accepted everything. The past was alterable. The past had never been altered.” “The unspoken tradition…was that they shot you from behind, always in the back of the head.” “He obeyed the Party, but he still hated the Party.” “You must love Big Brother. It is not enough to obey him;; you must love him.”
