 Fighting injustice for family and community.

 On page 30:  “Biting the hand that feeds you, that’s what you’re doing Mary Logan, biting the hand that feeds you.”-Daisy Crocker  “ If that’s the case, Daisy, I don’t think I need that little bit of food.”- Mary Logan

 This song explains this quote because, Mary is fighting injustice, for her family and for the students.

Song Stated: Family- Tobymac Lyrics: So are we still trying, or simply surviving Facing these giants, the bigger they are the harder they fall But I still believe in the dreams we’ve been dreamin The hope that we built on Its never too far, never too far If we choose to turn and let these walls fall down Are we too far apart? Two worlds among the stars You’re gonna take a piece of my heart if you leave So its two separate ways Or am I too late to say “I wanna fight for what we got Cause I believe in family” In family, in family I still believe… I still believe… That we're not too far apart? Two worlds among the stars Don’t take a piece of my heart please don’t leave It’s not too late to say: “Father show us the way To fight for what we got Cause You believe in family, in family” In family, In family Arrows flying, into silence Broken pieces, lying around where it went down Waters risin, back to silence Quietly crying, wondering how And look at us now We thought our love would take the world by storm Are we too far apart? Two worlds among the stars You’re gonna take a piece of my heart if you leave So its two separate ways Or am I too late to say “I wanna fight for what we got Cause I believe in family” In family If we choose to turn and let these walls fall down Are we too far apart? Two worlds among the stars You’re gonna take a piece of my heart if you leave So its two separate ways Or am I too late to say “I wanna fight for what we got Cause I believe in family” In family, in family I still believe… I still believe… That we're not too far apart? Two worlds among the stars Don’t take a piece of my heart please don’t leave It’s not too late to say: “Father show us the way To fight for what we got Cause You believe in family, in family” In family, In family So are we still trying, or simply surviving Facing these giants, the bigger they are the harder they fall But I still believe in the dreams we’ve been dreamin The hope that we built on Its never too far, never too far

 On page 34  “Just had to come home and see ‘bout my babies”- David Logan

 This explains how all different types of family or generations can connect with others. And not know them very much, but share the same history.

 Sung By: Johnny Cash-Let the Circle be Unbroken There's a better home a- waiting In the sky, Lord, in the sky We sang the songs of childhood Hymns of faith that made us strong Ones that mother maybelle taught us Hear the angels sing along Will the circle be unbroken By and by, Lord, by and by There's a better home a- waiting In the sky, Lord, in the sky Will the circle be unbroken By and by, Lord, by and by There's a better home a- waiting In the sky, Lord, in the sky I was standing by my window, On one cold and cloudy day When I saw that hearse come rolling For to carry my mother away Will the circle be unbroken By and by, Lord, by and by There's a better home a- waiting In the sky, Lord, in the sky I said to that undertaker Undertaker please drive slow For this lady you are carrying Lord, I hate to see here go Will the circle be unbroken By and by, Lord, by and by There's a better home a- waiting In the sky, Lord, in the sky Oh, I followed close behind her Tried to hold up and be brave But I could not hide my sorrow When they laid her in the grave Will the circle be unbroken By and by, Lord, by and by There's a better home a-waiting In the sky, Lord, in the sky I went back home, my home was lonesome Missed my mother, she was gone All of my brothers, sisters crying What a home so sad and lone Will the circle be unbroken By and by, Lord, by and by

 On page 45  “But Big Ma,” Little man protested. “ ifn that ole bus driver would slow down, I wouldn’t get muddy!” Then he frowned deeply and added, “ Or, ifn we had a bus like theirs.”  “Well, he don’t, and you don’t.” Big Ma said, getting up. “So ain’t no use frettin’ ‘bout it. One day you’ll have a plenty of clothes and maybe even a car of yo’ own to ride around in, so don’t you pay no mind to them ignorant white folk. You jus’ keep on studyin’ and get yo’self a good education and you’ll be all right…”

 Big Ma explains that there are going to be some people that are going to be in your way. And bring you down, but he has to get prepared.

 Sung By: Swedish House Mafia- Don’t you worry child  Lyrics: There was a time I met a girl of a different kind. We ruled the world, I thought I'd never lose her out of sight. We were so young, I think of her now and then. I still hear the songs Reminding me of a friend. Upon a hill across a blue lake, That's where I had my first heartbreak. I still remember how it all changed. My father said, "Don't you worry, don't you worry, child. See heaven's got a plan for you. Don't you worry, don't you worry now." Yeah! Oh, oh, oh! Oh, oh, oh! See heaven's got a plan for you [Live version repetitions:] See heaven's got a plan for you See heaven's got a plan for you "Don't you worry, don't you worry, child. See heaven's got a plan for you. Don't you worry, don't you worry now." Yeah! Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh! [3x] Yeah! There was a time I used to look into my father's eyes. In a happy home I was a king, I had a golden throne. Those days are gone, Now the memory's on the wall. I hear the songs From the places where I was born. Upon a hill across a blue lake, That's where I had my first heartbreak. I still remember how it all changed. My father said, "Don't you worry, don't you worry, child. See heaven's got a plan for you. Don't you worry, don't you worry now." Yeah! "Don't you worry, don't you worry, child. See heaven's got a plan for you. Don't you worry, don't you worry now." Yeah!

 On page 81  “Mama knows Stacey wouldn’t cheat”- Cassie

 No one defended Stacey, there was at least 4 people that could’ve spoken.  T.J.- He kept the truth in himself  Little Wille and Clarence- didn’t want to get involved  Stacey- but his sense of honor, prevented him to speak

 Sung By: All That Remains- The Waiting One  Lyrics: How did you think I would feel You throw me aside again How did you think I would feel I won't let you hurt me again now I'm nothing to you I can see Just walk away from me I'm torn up but I can't believe You sat and watched me bleed How could you do this to me Betrayed by my closest friend How could you do this to me I won't let you hurt me again I am the waiting one it seems... I am the waiting one it seems Days grow somber quickly Now how the quiet is release And I feel so lonely How did you think I would feel Throw me aside again How did you think I would feel I won't let you hurt me again now I'm nothing to you I can see Just walk away from me I'm torn up but I can't believe You sat and watched me bleed She was the one thing I believed That I needed to hold me Still I can smell her hear her breath Feel her body beside me How long I've waited, waited for you To come back to hold me What should I, what should I, What should I do When I feel so lonely How could you do this to me Betrayed by my closest friend How could you do this to me I won't let you hurt me again now I'm nothing to you I can see Just walk away from me I'm torn up but I can't believe You sat and watched me bleed What should I, What should I do? Oh how long I have waited What can I, What can I do? When I feel so lonely

 “ Ain’t never no good reason to disobey your mama” – Mr. Morrison

 Stacey may have had a good reason to want to whoop T.J., but he should not have disobeyed his Mother.

 Sung By:Gotye - Somebody That I Used To Know  Lyrics: Now you're just somebody that I used to know Now you're just somebody that I used to know Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over But had me believing it was always something that I'd done But I don't wanna live that way Reading into every word you say You said that you could let it go And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know But you didn't have to cut me off Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing And I don't even need your love But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough No you didn't have to stoop so low Have your friends collect your records and then change your number I guess that I don't need that though Now you're just somebody that I used to know Somebody (I used to know) Somebody (Now you're just somebody that I used to know) (I used to know) (That I used to know) (I used to know) Somebody Now and then I think of when we were together Like when you said you felt so happy you could die Told myself that you were right for me But felt so lonely in your company But that was love and it's an ache I still remember You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness Like resignation to the end, always the end So when we found that we could not make sense Well you said that we would still be friends But I'll admit that I was glad it was over But you didn't have to cut me off Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing And I don't even need your love But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough No you didn't have to stoop so low Have your friends collect your records and then change your number I guess that I don't need that though Now you're just somebody that I used to know

 On page 88  “ Big Ma,” I said, “ what Mr. Granger need more land for?”  “ Don’t need it,” Big Ma said flatly. “ Got more land than he know what to do with.”  “ Well, what he want with ours then?”  “ Just like to have it, that’s all.”

 Cassie says that he’s being greedy. When you are being greedy or selfish, then you are being unjust.

 Sung By: Linkin Park- Lies Greed Misery  Lyrics: I'mma be that nail in your coffin Sayin' that I softened I was duckin' down to reload So you can save your petty explanations I don't have the patience Before you even say it I know You let your pride or your ego Talk slick to me, no That is not the way I get down And look at how you lose your composure Now let me show you Exactly how the breaking point sounds [Chorus] I wanna see you choke on your lies Swallow up your greed Suffer all alone in your misery Choke on your lies Swallow up your greed Suffer all alone in your misery I wanna see you choke on your lies Swallow up your greed Suffer all alone in your misery Choke on your lies Swallow up your greed Suffer all alone in your misery You did it to yourself [x8] [Chorus] I wanna see you choke on your lies Swallow up your greed Suffer all alone in your misery Choke on your lies Swallow up your greed Suffer all alone in your misery What is it you want me to tell you I am not the failure I would rather live and let be But you came with the right kind of threat to Push me to let you No you can't intimidate me You disrespect me so clearly Now you better hear me That is not the way it goes down You did it to yourself and it's over Now let me show you Exactly how the breaking point sounds

 On page 98  “The Wallaces did that, children. They poured kerosene over Mr. Berry and his nephews and lit them afire.”  “Everyone knows they did it, and the Wallaces even laugh about it, but nothing was ever done. They’re bad people, the Wallaces. That’s why I don’t want you to ever go to their store again- for any reason. You understand?”-Mary Logan

 It explains that the Wallaces are unjust. And they don’t think about everyone being equal. Mama tries to explain to them that they are not to go there and why.

 Sung By: Neil Young-Southern Man  Lyrics: Southern man better keep your head Don't forget what your good book said Southern change gonna come at last Now your crosses are burning fast Southern man I saw cotton and I saw black Tall white mansions and little shacks. Southern man when will you pay them back? I heard screamin' and bullwhips cracking How long? How long? Southern man better keep your head Don't forget what your good book said Southern change gonna come at last Now your crosses are burning fast Southern man Lily Belle, your hair is golden brown I've seen your black man comin' round Swear by God I'm gonna cut him down! I heard screamin' and bullwhips cracking How long? How long?

 On page 138  “ I know that, son, but that kinda talk get you hung and you know it.”-Big Ma

 This is an example of injustice, because a black man couldn’t say something even in jest for fear of being hung.

 Song Stated: Strange Fruit- Billie Holiday  Lyrics:  Southern trees bear a strange fruit Blood on the leaves and blood at the root Black bodies swingin' in the Southern breeze Strange fruit hangin' from the poplar trees Pastoral scene of the gallant South The bulgin' eyes and the twisted mouth Scent of magnolias sweet and fresh Then the sudden smell of burnin' flesh Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck For the sun to rot, for the tree to drop Here is a strange and bitter crop

 After T.J., R.W., and Melvin robbed the store, T.J. threaten to tell on them. T.J. got a beating from them, they left him by a pool hall; and T.J. found a way to the Logan’s house. He confessed to the children about what had happened, because they wouldn’t believe him or help him without the truth. Once they got him home, and were about to leave, 6 cars drove up to the Avery’s house. After the night men throw all the Avery’s out their house ( including the little children) and beat T.J. and his parents Mr. Jamison arrives and tries to stop it.

 The 4 children get T.J. home and are then witness to the attack on the Avery family. Mr. Jamison shows the other side of how some people were. Mr. Jamison’s actions show that not all white people were evil.

 Sung By: John Fischer- Righteous man  Lyrics:  I want to be a more righteous man.  I want to be a more Godly man.  Teach me to do what I can, follow closer to You.  I want to follow a different drum.  Even if I’m the only one.  I want to hear when I’m done  “You did well, my son.”  Ooooh  Wont you take a look around your brothers  Ooooh why  Tell me why doesn’t anybody want to try  Anymore?  Ooooh  Wont you take a look around your woman  Oooh why  Tell me why doesn’t anybody want to cry?

 While this is happening Cassie, Christopher-John, and Little Man go back to their house to tell their Papa. On page Papa was about bring his shotgun, but mama stops him. Mama says “But there’s another way. Some way they wont kill you too. Get Harlan Granger to stop it. If he says so, they’ll go on home.” After awhile they smell smoke, and every one believes that it was lightning that starts the fire on Granger’s land. This distracts everyone from hanging T.J., and all they come together to help put out the fire.

 This event shows how in the face of catastrophe even bitter enemies can work toward a common good. This event shows how Papa’s quick thinking and sacrifice helped save lives.

 Sung By: James Taylor- You’ve Got a Friend  Lyrics: When you're down and troubled and you need a helping hand and nothing, whoa, nothing is going right. Close your eyes and think of me and soon I will be there to brighten up even your darkest nights. You just call out my name, and you know where ever I am I'll come running to see you again. Winter, spring, summer, or fall, all you have to do is call and I'll be there, yeah, yeah, you've got a friend. If the sky above you should turn dark and full of clouds and that old north wind should begin to blow, keep your head together and call my name out loud. Soon I will be knocking upon your door. You just call out my name, and you know where ever I am I'll come running to see you again. Winter, spring, summer, or fall, all you have to do is call and I'll be there. Hey, ain't it good to know that you've got a friend? People can be so cold. They'll hurt you and desert you. Well, they'll take your soul if you let them, oh yeah, but don't you let them. You just call out my name, and you know where ever I am I'll come running to see you again. Winter, spring, summer, or fall, all you have to do is call, Lord, I'll be there, yeah, yeah, you've got a friend. You've got a friend. Ain't it good to know you've got a friend. Ain't it good to know you've got a friend. Oh, yeah, yeah, you've got a friend.

 Sung By: Marvin Gaye- Can I get a witness  Lyrics: Up early in the morning with her on my mind Just to find out all night that I've been cryin' But I believe a woman's a man's best friend So I'm gonna stick by her till the very end But she causes so much misery I forget how Love is supposed to be Somebody, somewhere, tell her it ain't fair Can I get a witness? I want a witness Witness, witness Witness, witness Everybody knows, especially you girls Love can be sad But I have a love that's twice as bad Now all you chicks agree That this ain't the way its's supposed to be Let me hear you, let me hear you say yeah, yeah I want a witness I want a witness I want a witness I want a witness… Listen everybody, especially you girls Is it right to be left alone While the one you love is never home? I love too hard, my friends sometimes say But I believe, I believe That a woman should be loved that way But it hurts me so inside To see her treat me so unkind Somebody, somewhere tell her it's unfair Can I get a witness? Can I get a witness? Can I get a witness? Somebody Is it right to be treated so bad When you've given everything you had? Even tossin' in my sleep 'Cause I haven't seen my baby all week Now, you chicks do agree That this ain't the way love's supposed to be Let me hear, let me hear you say yeah, yeah
