TDOT Smartway Overview
It is the mission of Smart Way TMC’s to proactively monitor the interstates to maximize traffic flow and inform area motorists of abnormal conditions. This is accomplished using field devices, software and Smartway partners to gather and disseminate real-time traveler information.
The mission of HELP is to minimize traffic congestion, promote the safe movement of people and products, and improve the travel environment. We work in partnership with emergency response agencies and other TDOT units as part of a highway incident management team. We are committed to performing all our duties in a professional manner.

What is a queue? Defined as a line of slow moving or stopped traffic. In June of 2013, the Protect the Queue campaign was born. This movement stresses to all TDOT employees and partnering agencies the importance of protecting drivers caught in a traffic queue. A training program on the most effective queue management techniques was launched. Since the start of TDOT's Protect the Queue campaign, data gathered from July 2013 through December 2013 shows a 19% reduction in secondary incidents over the same period in This equates to 20 fewer secondary incidents, and could represent four lives saved.
ITS 1 st and 2 nd shift watched for choke points during peak travel periods Identified 10 for potential improvement measures Reported them to the Regional Traffic Office Traffic Engineering Tasked to identify and improve local choke points Asked for ITS assistance Received information from ITS and added this to already collected data Reported the identities
