Configurable Assessment, Intelligent Grading Using xyAlgebra Presented at the Themed Session on Assessment, AMATYC 2009 Annual Conference, Nov. 12, By Prof. John C. Miller, The City College of C.U.N.Y. address:
xyAlgebra: For Placement, Instruction, Practice and Assessment in Basic Algebra We follow the configuration, administration, automated grading, review and regrading of an assessment using xyAlgebra and its associated instructor program, xyManager.
The instructor chooses to reconfigure Exam #4 for Eunice Euclid, to change the rule for assigning part credit. xyManager: The Instructor’s Program
Changing the Maximum Part Credit The instructor specifies that Eunice should get 7 out of 10 points if all but one of the steps she enters to solve a multiple-step problem are correct.
Eunice Signs In to xyAlgebra Eunice runs xyAlgebra and enters her I.D. Number. Her name and progress record are found in the xyAlgebra database.
Eunice Chooses to Take an Exam The instructor configured Eunice’s Exam #4 to permit postponement, but she chooses to “Take Exam #4 Now.”
Eunice Makes an Arithmetic Error On Problem #2, Eunice uses the product denominator, and then reduces her answer. However, she factors 45 mentally as 15(5) (or types 5 when she means 3) and so obtains an incorrect answer.
Eunice Gets Her Results Immediately Immediately after Eunice completes her exam, xyAlgebra displays her individual question scores, her total raw score and her exam score as a percent.
Eunice Reviews Her Exam Eunice then scrolls through her automatically graded exam. XyAlgebra has assessed each step based on equivalence to the preceding step, so her incorrect step is flagged.
The Instructor Learns the Result When the instructor reopens the grade book, Eunice’s score on Exam #4 is displayed, and her average is recomputed.
The Instructor Reviews Eunice’s Steps With a couple of clicks, the instructor locates Eunice’s error (flagged by [-] at the left) and sees that it involved arithmetic or carelessness, but not a conceptual issue.
The Instructor Edits the Part Score With a few more clicks, the instructor raises the credit to 9/10. The “regraded” final score of 97 appears immediately.
The Instructor Notifies Eunice The grade book is updated immediately. XyManager also offers to notify Eunice when she next signs in to xyAlgebra.
XyAlgebra: Intelligent Help at Every Step Each step is checked for equivalence to the preceding step. Prerequisites are reviewed when errors are detected. A suggested next type of operation is always available. A suggested next step is always available. When conducting practice or homework sessions, xyAlgebra accepts step-by-step solutions, and provides intelligent help at each step. Its suggestions are based on the last correct step, so it supports any correct solution method.
