RAL Front End Test Stand Overview, Status and Plans RAL 12 th January 2005 Alan Letchford, ISIS Injector Group

Overview The RAL Front End Test Stand (FETS) will test the high speed beam chopper under full beam conditions. High intensity H - ion source, optimised LEBT, 2.5 MeV RFQ, chopper line, beam dump, diagnostics. Build on experience gained with the ISIS RFQ Test Stand and re-use some of the facility. Disseminate some of our knowledge and experience in new directions.

Ion Source Status Work progressing to test source with independent control of Penning field. Investigation of optical techniques for beam analysis. LEBT Status Magnetic LEBT looking preferable to electrostatic. Beginning to run codes to look at beam envelopes.

RFQ Status Work is necessarily general until a firm frequency choice is made. Familiarisation with basic principles, comparisons of EM simulation codes. Chopper Status Fast pulser now meets design spec. into a dummy load. Work progressing on ‘slow’ chopper structure and pulser. Thermal analysis beginning.

Facility Status 2D and 3D layouts produced for building R8. Bid to CCLRC Infrastructure Fund for money to reconfigure R8. Diagnostics Status Diagnostics critical to purpose of FETS. Needs to be state of the art – quite a bit to do.

Other Status Code philosophy rationalised. Commercial tracking code (GPT) licensed. Have started to purchase hardware. FETS web home – http://fets.isis.rl.ac.uk. Plans Make frequency choice. Start to finalise design parameters and detail design. Reconfigure R8 and install ion source/LEBT test stand.
