SYNERGY Project NSF funded 3 year grant to better: ▫ Write, manage and evaluate 13 Major Centers and Projects as collaborators “Scale Up” Best Practices ▫ Local to National – Sustainability Building support structure ▫ Professional “Calibratory” and Learning Communities

Remote Desktop Access & Applications Goal – create alternative ways to setting up on-campus labs Work with IT to set up server Use “different” methods and technology Pilot test by Center partners Mentor other colleges in RDAA Train other IT and faculty in its use

Learning New “Best Practices” Logic Model Creation and Use Team Dynamics ▫ Creating, expanding and managing team “Overcoming Obstacles” ▫ Getting things done Using Social Media Developing “stories” ▫ case studies of successes

Author’s opinions are not necessarily shared by NSF

Current Research: Community College Map Managed Layers of DataGeoTech Community College Map ATE Centers Colleges Classified by GST Offerings Metro Areas Congressional Districts States New Layer? ▫Universities with GST Offerings

Accomplishments Submitted Community College Map to ESRI Poster Session (International Conference 2010)

Accomplishments Findings/Issues Addressed Geospatial Education at Community Colleges is Regional Most regions are characterized by community colleges with no geospatial education Future research needs to connect, map, and assess the location of GST workers ▫New DOL Codes for the Geospatial Industry ▫This research is critical in assessing expansion or creating new GST curriculum Publication: Mapping Geospatial Education at Community and Technical Colleges - Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA)

Accomplishments Instructor contact information for colleges with GST certificates and degrees (around 170 colleges) ▫Name, Program Website URL, , Phone Number Added new university layer ▫Pilot Study on California

Planned Activities Validating the accuracy of the GST college database In progress through surveys, , and phone calls to college Tracking when and who we contact in GDB New attributes: remote sensing, GPS, and online Researching contact information for the schools with courses only 300 (In Progress) Name of Instructor, , Programming Department 50% Complete

Outreach and Growth – Discussion How do we use the national community college map to better serve the geospatial education and technician movement within the nation’s community colleges? Who will use the map? For what purposes? Using the map as a social network linking educators, students, and employers Using the map to disseminate GTCM Profiles for schools Disseminate the map to research and broader ATE community Others

Connecting the GST industry and students ▫Allow students or programs to upload a skill set profile to GeoTech Community College Map ▫Use the map through geographic or attribute queries to assist both students or employers in finding workers/programs marketing the target skill sets required for a specific job. Planned Activities

National Map Interface Vince DiNoto Co-PI/Dean of College and Systemic Initiatives Funded by National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education program [DUE # ]. Author’s opinions are not necessarily shared by NSF National Visiting Committee Atlanta GA February 2011

Current National Map

Accomplishments Successful GeoED ‘10 Conference Creation of GeoTech data on Google Map

Accomplishments Note a work in progress

Accomplishments Install and configure ArcGIS Server V10 Install and configure SQL Server Presentations on Terminal Services Created political map that was updated live on election night Created a web map that allows for data editing via web browser

Accomplishments

Developed and held ArcGIS Server Workshop virtualized machines for each participant created workshop documentation Successfully recruited new geospatial technician 50% GeoTech and 50% college Created a Map Library

Future Activities GeoED’11 Conference Reorganization Kentucky Geospatial Team training for new technician web designer and student workers Move ArcGIS Server v10 into a public machine More fully understand Flex and create detailed documentation

Future Activities Continue research - online mapping services html 5, Silverlight, Java API Move National Map to SQL database Enable select individuals to edit GeoTech Map(s) live through a web interface Increase number of maps in Map Library

Future Activities Schematic for National Map

Discussion for Session 1 Topics
