Deductive Reasoning BY: [NAME REMOVED]

2
What is Deductive Reasoning Deductive reasoning is a logical process in which a conclusion is based on the concordance of multiple premises that are generally assumed to be true.

3
Vocabulary you should know for Deductive Reasoning. Law Of Syllogism Law of Detachment

4
Law Of Syllogism 1) If p, then q. 2) If q, then r. So, by the Law of Syllogism, we can deduce that 3) If p, then r

5
Example of the law of Syllogism If you’re a Tiger then you’re a predator If you’re a predator then your something that eats something that’s alive If you’re a Tiger then your something that eats something that’s alive

6
Law of Detachment If p then q. P is true. Therefore, q is true

7
Law Of Detachment 1) If you are a penguin, then you live in the Southern Hemisphere. 2) You are a penguin.

8
Example Problem 1 Directions: Using the Law of syllogism find the conclusion ◦If you run, then you sweat ◦If you sweat, then you get tired ◦Therefore if you run, then you get tired Explanation: Saying that you sweat is saying that you’re exporting energy Which means that you’re getting tired so That is how one would get that therefore If you sweat then then you get tired so if you run then you get tired.

9
Example Problem 2 Directions: Find what can you conclude by using the law of detachment ◦If you’re a penguin, then you live in the southern hemisphere. ◦If Lucas is a penguin Lucas ◦Therefore, Lucas lives in the southern Hemisphere Explanation: The way I got my conclusion was saying if Lucas is a penguin then if penguins live in the southern hemisphere then Lucas lives in the southern hemisphere.

10
Practice Problem 1 Directions: Using the Law Of Detachment find a conclusion ◦If peter is healthy, then he successfully gets his check ups every month.

11
Practice Problem 2 Direction: Using the Law of Detachment find a conclusion. ◦If Lucas plays the guitar well, then he practices the guitar for a long time.

12
Practice Problem 3 Directions: Using the Law of Detachment Find a conclusion ◦If Anna cooks well, Then she has experience in cooking

13
Practice Problem 4 Directions: Using the Law of Syllogism finish the statement If you go jogging in the rain, then you’ll slip

14
Practice Problem 5 Directions: Using the law of Syllogism finish the statement. ◦If you go skateboarding, then you go and disrespect a sign

15
Solutions for the practice problems 1.If peter is healthy is true, then he must be getting his monthly check up. 2.If Lucas playing the guitar well is true, then Lucas must’ve practiced the guitar for a long time. 3.If Anna cooks well is true, then she has experience in cooking is true. 4. If you slip then you hurt yourself, Therefore jogging will make you hurt yourself. 5. If you go and disrespect signs you go to jail, Therefore if you go skateboarding then you go to jail.
