2 Expand a Sentence  What are the two essential parts of a sentence? Every sentence must have these two parts of speech.  Subject noun and verb (predicate) Example: Bird moved.

3 Bird moved.  How can you make these words more specific & vivid?  What kind of bird?  Write a vivid verb to replace moved.  Write your own two word sentence.

4 Penguin waddled.

5 Swallow swooped.

6 Hummingbird hovered.

7 Eagle soared.

8 What can you add to the Subject noun to make it more interesting? Adjective  For example:  Portly penguin  Shy penguin  Frail penguin  Angry penguin  Elderly penguin  Wise penguin  Fluffy penguin

9 What can you add to the verb to make it more interesting? Adverb (usually add an ly) For example:  Portly penguin waddled aimlessly.  Shy penguin waddled cautiously.  Frail penguin waddled timidly.  Angry penguin waddled fearlessly.

10 Reptile went.  How can you make these words more specific & vivid?  What kind of reptile?  Write a vivid verb to replace went.  Write your own two word sentence.

11 Adjective For example:  Menacing rattlesnake slithered. What can you add to the Subject noun to make it more interesting? What can you add to the verb to make it more interesting? Adverb For example:  Menacing rattlesnake slithered silently.

12 Add a prepositional phrase prepositions: aboard about above across after against along around before behind below beneath beside between during into throughout toward under upon This is just a few of the prepositions. See Write Source text for more.  Menacing rattlesnake slithered silently toward the unsuspecting mouse.

13 Menacing rattlesnake slithered silently toward the unsuspecting mouse. Menacing rattlesnake slithered silently into the picnic basket. Menacing rattlesnake slithered silently across Mrs. Hoy’s foot. Now write your own prepositional phrase for this sentence.

14 Expand these sentences. Lion roared. Child cried. Ballerina twirled.

15 Rearrange the expanded sentences. Adverb first Prepositional phrase first Adjective first Menacing rattlesnake slithered silently toward the unsuspecting mouse. Silently, menacing rattlesnake slithered toward the unsuspecting mouse. Toward the unsuspecting mouse, menacing rattlesnake slithered silently.
