Dr Sue Owen Coventry University Learning from Mistakes A different way of learning
Dr Sue Owen Coventry University What is Learning from Mistakes? A way of testing the depth of understanding achieved by students. A fun method of getting information about usually boring subjects across. A last resort for a lecturer who had tried everything!
Dr Sue Owen Coventry University How it evolved Initially applied to CAD drawings then to standard BS 8888 technical drawings. The drawings were produced with mistakes on them and labelled as the lecturer’s own work. Students were asked to mark the mistakes and note what was wrong. Then they were told not to make the same mistakes themselves in their work.
Dr Sue Owen Coventry University Why use this idea? The same mistakes re-occurred annually. Telling students how to draw to standard did not always work. Practicing their own drawings, with feedback from lecturer was not always successful. Students really like to find fault with a lecturer’s work. It is a totally different and a fun way of assessing knowledge
Dr Sue Owen Coventry University When can this be used? As a formative, but fun, session. When students have already had feedback and need reinforcement of theories. To assist learning in problem areas. To give detailed information in a format which will help the student to produce better work.

Dr Sue Owen Coventry University next? A mini project. What next? A mini project. There are plans to expand this idea into other areas of Engineering where there is a history of recurring student difficulties. Thermo-fluids Thermo-fluids Mechanics Mechanics Communication Communication
