2 Fundamental Questions: Tips for solving Absolute value & Square root equations 1.Use parentheses liberally 2.Solve the equation to = 0, then replace 0 with y. 3.Now use your calculator. TI (Y=); Casio from Menu (Graph) 4.To get the absolute value: (Use parentheses) TI – Press Math Button, then go to NUM #1 Casio – Press Shift Catalog (#4); Scroll down to Abs 5. To get x 3 = x^3 on both calculators 6. The solution= where the graph crosses the x axis; x intercepts Examples: Harton pg 78 # 37 and 40 Students pg 78 #42 and 44.

5 Tips for solving Absolute value & Square root equations 1.Use parentheses liberally 2.Solve the equation to = 0, then replace 0 with y. The solution= where the graph crosses the x axis; x intercepts TI – Press 2 nd Calc go to “zero” (#2). Must do left (cursor to left of point) then guess & right bound (cursor to right of point) then guess. Casio – shift G-Solv push root (exe) Examples: Harton pg 78 # 37 and 40 Students pg 78 #42 and 44.
