Through the Hospital Design Facilities Interior Division, there is an annual competition to choose the best hospitals which put into consideration the previous standards This year, there were 64 projects in The category of the best architectural design project in the Middle East and the best three of them have been nominated. About IIR MIDDLE EAST 3- Best Hospital Design Award (Built and Future) An outstanding hospital design scheme that places both patients and the environment at the heart of the project, and brings the hospital into the city or townscape. The category is divided into two Awards, projects planned and not yet built, and projects built and operational. Entries must provide clear information to highlight that the project meets the following criteria: Strategy: Creates a sense of civic pride by bringing the hospital into the city or townscape through strategic master-planning. Place making: Creates an inspirational sense of place and a therapeutic environment for patients and visitors both inside and outside the building. Innovation: Demonstrates innovation in the model of care and provides an effective staff working environment to support a sense of belonging. Adaptability: Provides flexibility and adaptability to meet changing service needs. Sustainability: Demonstrates a vision for investment that responds to social, economic and environmental issues. Eligibility This category is open to Hospitals located in the Middle East, from either the private or government sectors. Entry requirements Entries must comprise a 500 word statement and a maximum of six PowerPoint slides that in combination clearly and explicitly address the above criteria textually and visually. Entries should be prepared and submitted jointly or independently by the architect, commissioning body, developer and/or the design team 7

9. 6 The Hospital Build Awards will be judged by an independent panel made up of internationally and regionally respected judges from a variety of industry sectors and disciplines. These include: Kamil Eid Mr. Awni Kopty Mr. Ted Jacob HDP Overseas Universal Hospital Services Ted Jacob Engineering Group Judging procedure After the closing date for submissions all nominations will be collected and reviewed by a panel of internationally recognised and respected judges drawn from a variety on industry sectors and disciplines – guaranteeing objectivity and credibility. The judges will use the published criteria against which to score the entry. Each Award winner will be decided by consensus among the judges and no correspondence will be entered into by outside parties. Judging will be based on the strength of the submissions and according to the Award key criteria. The judges will then submit their individual scores which are collated and a shortlist created and winners selected. Winners will be announced only on the night of the Awards ceremony itself. The Chair of the judging panel reserves the right to cast any deciding vote, should the need arise. The judges’ decision is final and neither the organisers nor the judging panel will enter into any correspondence about the results. Judging Criteria Each entry will be scored by the judges using a simple scoring system based on the criteria for each Award. Winners revealed at the inaugural Hospital Build Awards The first Hospital Build Awards ceremony took place today as a part of the Hospital Design & Upgrade Conference. “We were impressed with the number of nominations we received for the Awards and believe this reflects the need for a programme of this kind to recognise good practice in constructing new healthcare facilities in the region,” said Kamil Eid, Manager of Health Services for HDP (Overseas) Ltd and a member of the judging panel.
