5 Undergraduate Points of Pride Undergraduate Points of Pride HDFS is a popular major with over 400 students On a 5-point scale where 3 is average, students rate HDFS instructor effectiveness above average (app. 4) The Princeton Review has stated UNCG’s HDFS programs receive “enthusiastic praise from current students” Courses emphasize cultural influences and global awareness

6 At the graduate level HDFS has over 50 students and offers An academic masters degree in Human Development and Family Studies the only Human Development and Family Studies doctoral program in North Carolina Collaborative B-K and FLPE Programs

7 Graduate Program Points of Pride The program is considered one of the best in the United States Effective student group -- e.g., hosted internationally known family historian in fall ‘07 In both 2004 and 2005 a UNCG PhD received the annual National Council on Family Relations Early Career Achievement Award. Two UNCG graduates are among the National Council on Family Relations’ 80 Fellows Alumnus Gary Bowen is President-elect of NCFR

9 Collaborative and Special Programs Points of Pride HDFS is a leader within HES for distance education, serving today’s diverse student population The Wake County program responds to an expressed community need The B-K programs prepare students for roles where North Carolina has a shortage of trained personnel

13 Family Research Center Marion O’Brien, Director Houses several projects Participates in 10-site NICHD Longitudinal Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development of 1000 children born in 1991, initially looked at effects of early child care, now looks at the natural history of children's development

14 Eight-year study examining the contextual, familial, and child characteristics that may contribute to early academic and social success versus challenging disruptive behavior in children. Calkins & O’Brien HDFS

15 North Carolina Rated License Assessment Project Conducts global quality assessments in child care programs across NC Statewide collaboration with the Division of Child Development ◦ Ongoing since 1999 ◦ Over 50 trained assessors and staff ◦ Conducts app. 300 assessments per month ◦ Current annual budget $4 million Serves the people of North Carolina in fostering high quality child care Cassidy, Hestenes, Mims, & Hestenes

16 FAMILY LIFE PROJECT Dr. Cheryl Buehler, Project Director NIMH funded study of 1700 youths transitioning from middle school into adolescence. Examines how aspects of family life – parenting, the marital relationship and how parents share parenting tasks, and parent’s emotional well- being – influence child outcomes (behavior, academic achievement, and emotional well-being)

17 Research Grant Points of Pride New/renewed projects since July 1, 2007: $ 4,163,107 HDFS has consistently been among the UNCG departments receiving the greatest amount of external funding (avg = app. 4 mil in the last two fiscal years) The success rate of HDFS’s grant applications is high

19 Faculty Points of Pride First, and most important, the faculty collectively is an excellent team Of 80 scholars honored as Fellows of the National Council on Family Relations, 4 are or have been UNCG faculty Susan Calkins has an NIMH Independent Scientist Career Development Award A recent download analysis showed that Dave Demo had published 2 of the 25 most-read articles in JMF

20 Dave Demo: Editor Par Excellence Dave Demo edits the Journal of Marriage and Family, the field’s leading journal. He processes over 700 manuscripts a year and drawing positive international attention to our department.

21 Jon Tudge’s Forthcoming Book A 7-nation study of how 3-year-olds in 3 continents spend their time, and who they are with as they learn what it means to be a part of their culture.

22 Roots and Wings Human development involves having both roots and wings Hopefully HDFS gives students both roots and wings and is a productive, pleasant phase in their life’s journey
