3 Some events of the 1980 Summer Olympic Games were held in other cities of the Soviet Union: sailing regatta started in Tallinn; preliminary games of the football tournament took place in Kiev, Leningrad and Minsk; shooting competitions were held in Mytishchi, Moscow region. 4 The Games were marked by a US- led boycott: more than 50 countries refused to participate in the Olympics in protest of 1979 Soviet war in Afghanistan. 6 As a form of protest against the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan, 15 countries marched in the Opening Ceremony with the Olympic Flag instead of their national flag. Among these countries were Australia, Andorra, Belgium, UK, Netherlands, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Puerto Rico, San Marino, France, Switzerland. 17 Medal standings  Athletes from 25 countries won Olympic gold.  Representatives of 36 States became the prize-winners of Games. More than a half of all gold medals won athletes from the USSR (80) and the GDR (47).

19 At the end of the closing ceremony in the middle of the stadium, mounted on multi-colored balloons, emerged a huge «Misha». He waved goodbye paw and began to rise slowly over the stadium until disappeared into the sky.
