3 NOT IN THE LABOR FORCE (ECONOMICALLY INACTIVE) UNEMPLOYED LABOR FORCE (ECONOMICALLY ACTIVE) WORKING AGE POPULATION (15 YEARS OLD & OVER) Potential supply of labor EMPLOYED TOTAL POPULATION BASIC BUILDING BLOCKS OF THE LABOR FORCE UNDEREMPLOYED (Desire to have additional hours or job ) VISIBLY UNDEREMPLOYED (Less 40 hours a week) INVISIBLY UNDEREMPLOYED (40 or More hours a week)

4 Working Age Population It refers to the population above a specified minimum age (usually 15 years old and over) who could produce the goods and services if there was a demand for their labor and if they desire to participate in such activity. also known as: 1. Potential supply of labor 2. Potential manpower/human resources Two components: 1. economically active (or labor force) 2. economically inactive (not in the labor force)

5  Persons 15 years old and over who during the reference period were either employed or unemployed LABOR FORCE Not in the Labor Force  Persons 15 years old and over who are neither employed or unemployed, e.g., full-time students, stay home housewives, retirees, etc.

6 persons who are economically inactive. persons who have worked at least one hour or with a job but not at work during the reference period. persons without job, available and looking for work during the reference period. 2. Unemployed 3. Not in the labor force 1. Employed 3 CATEGORIES OF STATUS IN EMPLOYMENT

7 Employed persons who expressed the desire to have:  Additional hours of work in their present job; or  Additional job; or  A new job with longer working hours. UNDEREMPLOYED PERSONS

8  Visibly Underemployed - worked less than 40 hours during the reference week.  Invisibly Underemployed - worked 40 or more hours during the reference week. TYPES OF UNDEREMPLOYMENT

9 Of the 20 people aged 15 to 64 in Northern Mindanao 19 of them are EMPLOYED But, of the 19, 5 of them are UNDEREMPLOYED In Region 10, 95.7 % of the Labor Force are employed Source: NSO and of the 5, 3 of them are IN VISIBLY UNDEREMPLOYED while 2 are VISIBLY UNDEREMPLOYED

10 LABOR FORCE In Jan 2013, Region 10 Labor force reached 2,009,000 Source: NSO 2013 = 68.9% 2012 = 70%
