The Teachings of Christ
Scripture reveals that the Lord Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, who always existed with the Father and the Holy Spirit, and who by His word incarnation took upon Himself the form of man and became the GOD-MAN. He laid aside His royal garments and put on the filthy rages of humanity. So that He might redeem us back to God, thus becoming our redeemer, when He shed His blood at Calvary. John 19:34-37 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe. For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, "Not one of His bones shall be broken." And again another Scripture says, "They shall look on Him whom they pierced."NKJV Hebrews 9:1-28 Without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sin.
To give us a better understanding of why it was needed for blood to be shed. We must first understand God ’ s covenants that he made with man. There are nine different covenants listed in the Bible, so lets examine what a covenant is, what are the types of covenants and what is takes to make a covenant. What is a covenant?
The word “ covenant ” in the Bible refers to a Contract or an Agreement drawn up between two or more parties. Covenants in the Bible fall into two categories. Between Men: treaties, alliances, constitutions, ordinances, pledges, alliances of friends, and marriage contracts
RevocableThis type of covenant is one in which God ’ s action is in response to some action on the part of those to whom the covenant is addressed. A revocable covenant guarantees the God will do His part with absolute certainty when the human requirements are met, but if man fails God is not obligated to fulfill His covenant. Basically, “ If you will, them God will ”. Exodus 19:5 Deuteronomy28:1-68 IrrevocableThis type of covenant, while it may include certain human contingencies, it is a declaration of the certain purpose of God. The promises of the covenant will be fulfilled in God ’ s time and regardless of man ’ s response to it. This type of covenant is not dependent upon man fulfilling certain requirements. Genesis 9:11 Exodus 6:3-8
Every time a covenant was established between God and man, God is seen as the Initiator of the covenant. God ’ s covenants (contracts) are always drawn up by Himself and presented to man. Therefore, man can do one of two things: accept it or reject it; but he can ’ t change it. There are three elements of a covenant. There are the Words, the Blood and the Seal of any of God ’ s covenants.
The Words: of the covenant (verbalized or written). This would include: 1.The Words-expressed agreements between the parties including: A. Terms. B. Oath. C. Blessings and Curses promises, D. Temporal and Eternal promises. 2.The Performance of-agreement of certain Actions. 3.The Guarantee-a promise confirmed by an appeal to God for its truth.
The Blood:of the covenant (representing the life commitment of those entering into the covenant) This would include: 1.The sacrifices of the covenant 2.The mediator of the covenant 3.The sanctuary of the covenant The Seal:of the covenant (an ongoing Proof of the validity of the promises and terms made in the covenant). It is also referred to as: 1.The Sign of the covenant 2.The Token of the covenant
Since it is impossible for God to lie, He has fulfilled and will continue to confirm His promises with mankind. One of the promises that God fulfilled is found in the birth of the church. This is found in Acts: Acts 2:1-4 Now when the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. NKJV
With the fulfillment of this promise, At the time a new believer repents and accepts what Jesus did, they receive the Spirit of God in their lives. This is the comforter that Jesus promised to us. 1 Cor 6:18-20Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. NIV John 14:25-26All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.NIV
The Holy Spirit works in our live in the following ways: He helps us to Pray. He gives us Power to serve and fight spiritual warfare. He helps us to overcome. Today in many churches the work of the Holy Spirit has been confused and denied. So many Christians miss out of the blessing of the power that is available to them through the ministry of the Holy Spirit. We will cover in more detail later the gifts of the Spirit where we will briefly cover the topic of speaking in tongues. Some churches say that the experience was only for the early church and not for today. They teach through lack of knowledge or traditions of men. This experience is for today.
In the minds of many people, “ Water Baptism ” has been looked at as some insignificant ritual of the Church. The Bible declares it to be a vital and absolute experience in the life of every believer. This is part of the foundation which is to be laid at the start of every person life who is born into the kingdom of God.
1. Why should we be baptized? A.Jesus Commands us to be baptized. Mark 16:16 Matthew 28:19-20 B.Jesus Himself was baptized, setting the example for us to follow. C.The Apostles also command it. D.If we love Him, we ’ ll do what He commands us. E.Our faith is validated by our Obedience to him.
Who should be baptized? The prerequisite is Belief and Trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. It ’ s not enough to be just a “ church attendee ”, you must be genuinely saved. 3.What happens when we are Water Baptized? A.You receive the name. Lord Jesus Christ Matthew 28:19 B.You identify with His death. C. You identify with His burial. D.You identify with His resurrection.
Rom 6:1-10What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin- because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, and he lives to God. (NIV)
Also involved in the experience of water baptism is a fulfillment and convental promise accomplishment. Outwardly there are three significant things that take place in water baptism. A.Farewell to ungodly living. B.A new standard of living. C.A disciple of Jesus.
2.Inwardly there is a work accomplished through a covenantal binding. Gen 17:9-14Then God said to Abraham, "As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come. This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised. You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you. For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner--those who are not your offspring. Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised. My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant. Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised in the flesh, will be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant." NIV A.Circumcision of the heart. Romans 6:3-13 B.Experiencing newness of life. (8th day) C.Walking in the nature of the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Water baptism is such a vital part of our Christian walk; every believer should be baptized as quickly as possible after salvation.
Another blessing God has given us is that of Communion. What is Communion? The communion of the body and blood of Christ is a ritualistic practice in which Christians partake of bread and wine (or grape juice) with the purpose of remembering Christ. Through communion we receive strength from Him and rededication themselves to His cause. It was instituted by Christ to be observed by His church until He returns. 1 Cor. 11:23-26For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. NIV
The Elements of communion are: 1. Bread: A. The Body of the Lord Jesus Christ. Luke 22:19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." NIV Isaiah 53:4-6 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. NIV B.The Body of Christ: 1 Cor. 10:14-17 Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry. I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf. NIV 1 Cor. 12:27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. NIV
2.The Wine or Grape Juice: A.The Blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 1:17-19 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. NIV 1 Cor. 11:25In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." NIV What the Blood of Christ does us. Cleanses us for our sins gives us Power and Reminds us of the covenant God has made with us.
In conclusion we have come back full circle to the covenants that God has made with us. With these promises He has given us the things necessary to have life and to have it more abundantly.
