What is A SACRAMENT?  are vessels of the mystical participation in divine grace of mankindgrace  In every sacrament there is a combination of an outward visible sign with an inward spiritual grace

Baptism  the door leading into the Kingdom of Grace  establishment of the sacrament took place in Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:16

Baptism  Greek work is “baptizo”: to immerse  In the sacrament of Baptism, the baptizee is immersed in water 3 times, Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit

Romans 6:4-5 “3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, “

Baptism  New birth performed for the salvation of man  Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. John 3:5-6  Eph 5:25-26, 1 Corinthians 6:11, Romans 6:4; Titus 3:5

Relevance of water  Water is life  Water is purification  Water is death (drowning; flood)

In the Name of Jesus  In the name of the Lord Jesus according to the tradition of the Fathers means: according to the commands and tradition of Christ Acts 19:5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Types of Baptism in the OT Genesis 1:2 “The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”

Entering into a Covenant Genesis 6:17-18 And behold, I Myself am bringing floodwaters on the earth, to destroy from under heaven all flesh in which is the breath of life; everything that is on the earth shall die. 18 But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall go into the ark—you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.

Entering into a Covenant This is My covenant which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: Every male child among you shall be circumcised; 11 and you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me and you.

Parting of the Red Sea

Ezekiel 16:8-10 When I passed by you again and looked upon you, indeed your time was the time of love; so I spread My wing over you and covered your nakedness. Yes, I swore an oath to you and entered into a covenant with you, and you became Mine,” says the Lord G OD. 9 “Then I washed you in water; yes, I thoroughly washed off your blood, and I anointed you with oil. 10 I clothed you in embroidered cloth and gave you sandals of badger skin; I clothed you with fine linen and covered you with silk.

Chrismation

Acts 8:14-18 Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, 15 who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16 For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. 18 And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money,

Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.

Chrismation 2 Acts take place 1.being united to the church 2.the seal of the grace-given power of the Holy Spirit for strength and growth in spiritual life

When did it become oil? Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, 22 who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who [a] is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.a

Why called Chrismation?  because Chrisma and Christos both mean anointing

But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things. [a] 21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and that no lie is of the truth.a 22 Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son. 23 Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father either; he who acknowledges the Son has the Father also. Let Truth Abide in You 24 Therefore let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that He has promised us—eternal life. 26 These things I have written to you concerning those who try to deceive you. 27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him. 1 John 2:20-27

What type of oil?  Chrism is Myrrh used at the burial of Christ, transferred from batch to batch  Made by the apostles and bishops through prayer and fasting  Ex 28:41, 1 Sam 16:13, 1 Kings 1:39

Ritual 1.Simple oil 2.Exorcism 3.Renunciation of Satan; accepting Christ 4.Oil of marriage 5.Immersion 6.Chrismation 7.Wearing of new white garment and red ribbon
