November 16 - 22, 2008 “If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.” (Ezekiel 33:6, New International Version) Weekly World Watch Andy Walton’s To skip the introductory slides and go straight to this weeks developments click here.

What is a Weekly World Watch? Israel: The continuing conflict in the Middle East and focus on Jerusalem. Europe: Its developing union, both political and religious. Russia: Its return to anti-Western ways as Bible prophecy’s “king of the north.” The UK and the US: Bible prophecy’s “king of the south.” Moral standards in decline and violence on the increase. WWW presentations in PowerPoint can be ordered as audio/visual CDs by clicking here. Move your mouse to place the cursor on the blue link and click.clicking here The idea is simple. It is to look at current events and compare them to events spoken of in the Bible.. I hope to build up a picture of God’s hand working in the affairs of this world. God is bringing about a day when all nations will be gathered to Jerusalem to battle. At that time God will send His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, back to this earth. Jesus will then establish God’s kingdom on earth. This kingdom will last for ever. This is our hope and the reason we watch. Increasing natural disasters: including earthquake, famine etc The following six themes will appear repeatedly in WWW:

HEADLINE EVENT COMMENT News Photo The source of the headline and the date are included. Each WWW looks at a few key developments that have happened during the past week. It is in no way meant to be exhaustive – just a look at those events I saw as significant from a Biblical point of view. What is in a Weekly World Watch? BIBLE QUOTE This is normally one verse which backs up why the event that has occurred is interesting from a Biblical perspective. Please read in its context. Unless stated otherwise, all quotes are from the King James Version. (Book, chapter, and verse) This is straight from a news report that caught my eye because it looked significant from a Biblical perspective, usually that of prophecy. Every WWW event slide has the following format. To reveal each block of text just left click your mouse or press the space bar. You control when it appears. This is the reporter’s description of the event. It is always a direct quotation from the news report and reflects the understanding of the reporter and editors. This is my comment on why the event is interesting to a Bible student. The intention of the WWW is to offer brief Biblical perspectives without going into detail. If more detail is desired, please e-mail me: (

Russia is flooding conflict zones with weapons Russia may have withdrawn into South Ossetia (technically part of Georgia anyway!) but this has only created a vacuum. Depending on which side you believe either Russia or Georgia are trying to take advantage of this vacuum. Probably both are. What is certain is that the tensions between Russia and Georgia are increasing again. Putin last week spoke of the Georgian leader in such obscene terms that they could not be put in a Weekly World Watch! With the oil price continuing to fall the pressure is increasing on Russia. As Georgia controls the flow of the only oil pipeline outside Russia to the West, Russia may well want to control this as well. When Russia does invade Israel it will be like a whirlwind. Very fast and ferocious. Russia will have to pass through Georgia to get to Israel. Tensions between Russia and Georgia are increasing amid accusations from both sides that they are escalating actions in conflict zones of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Moscow officials and separatists in those regions said Georgia is engaging in terrorist activity that was being ignored by European Union observers. Georgian officials denied the charges and accused Russia of supplying weapons to the separatists and for provocations by the guerrillas. The increased tensions raise the spectre of a second Russian invasion into Georgia, similar to the Russian military operation last August. An official Russian Foreign Ministry statement stated that there is "concern with the growth of the Georgian police presence near the South Ossetian and Abkhazian borders" and asserted that UN officials "note a substantial vacuum" in security following the withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers from the border areas. Geostrategy Direct, November 12, 2008 EVENT COMMENT and at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships BIBLE QUOTE (Daniel 11:40)

Prospect of Israeli strike on Iran more likely The Jerusalem Post also commented this week on the article in The Times newspaper. It does appear that the chances of a pre emptive strike by Israel on Iran has increased. The Times also reported that President Bush is to hold White House talks with the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Monday after publication of a nuclear watchdog’s report this week showing that Iran may have stockpiled enough enriched uranium to make a nuclear bomb. The timing of the talks, between two lame duck leaders with only weeks to go before they leave office, is intriguing. Israel has stated repeatedly that it would be unacceptable for an Iranian regime to acquire nuclear weapons. Although Tehran insists that its uranium enrichment programme is for peaceful purposes, President Ahmadinejad has vowed to wipe Israel off the face of the earth. We cannot say for certain if Israel will attack Iran as the Bible does not mention this. We can say that Iran will bring great destruction to Iraq. Many ancient prophecies speak of a cataclysmic end for the literal land of Babylon (modern Iraq). See Isaiah 13. Iran has threatened to bring such destruction on Iraq if it is attacked by either Israel or America. Therefore it is possible Iran will be provoked to do so at some point. Barack Obama discussed these very issues with EU leaders at a recent meeting. Intelligence sources have told the London-based The Times newspaper that the prospect of Israel taking pre-emptive military action to knock out Iran’s nuclear facilities appears to have become significantly more likely in recent weeks. A report published this week by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) points to the possibility that Tehran has already obtained enough enriched uranium to make one atomic bomb. Israel News, November 21, 2008 EVENT COMMENT Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, …And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees’ excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. BIBLE QUOTE (Isaiah 13:17 & 19)

UK hopeful of Middle East change Britain is hopeful that with a change in leadership in America and Israel that peace is more likely in the Middle East. There is no doubt at all the Britain is heading towards judgement for the way it has turned its back on the Jews. See Isaiah 2:12-16 (Tarshish = Britain). This week we have seen Britain meeting with Syria and siding with Israel’s greatest foe. We have seen Israel being urged by Britain to do nothing about the constant barrage of rockets fired at them. We have seen Britain begin to penalise Israel for exporting food and beauty products out of the West Bank. Click here for full report.Click here Israel is infuriated by these UK interventions – especially the last one. Israel sees it as an attempt by Britain to force its hand on the settlement issue. Britain has become a harlot. Despite “hearing the word of the LORD”, she (like ancient Tyre) has turned against the Jews. God will turn against her. BBConline, November 19, 2008 EVENT COMMENT after the end of seventy years shall Tyre sing as an harlot…. and she shall turn to her hire, and shall commit fornication with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth. BIBLE QUOTE (Isaiah 23:15 & 17) Britain's foreign secretary has said he hopes the coming year will be an opportunity for global change which will benefit the troubled Middle East. David Miliband, who has been in Israel, the occupied West Bank and Syria, was speaking after meeting Lebanese President Michel Suleiman in Beirut. He cited the new US administration and scheduled elections in Israel, Iran and Lebanon as potential agents of change. He said each country must think how it will contribute to peace and stability. "I think 2009 is going to be a very important year," Mr Miliband told reporters after meeting with Lebanese President Michel Suleiman. "It is the year of change globally because there is a new American president, there will be a new Israeli government, there will be elections in Lebanon and.... in Iran as well."

Sweden ratifies EU Lisbon Treaty Sweden has become the 24th of the EU's 27 member states to ratify the controversial Lisbon Treaty. Sweden's parliament backed the reform treaty after a late-night debate, with 243 votes in favour, 39 against and 67 deputies absent or abstaining. The treaty, aimed at reshaping EU institutions to fit an enlarged bloc of 27, has to be ratified by each member state to take effect. But Irish voters rejected it and Czech and Polish ratification is stalled. The Republic of Ireland's "No" vote in a referendum in June threw the whole ratification process into disarray. Governments in countries that have ratified the treaty insist it cannot be changed, so treaty supporters are considering whether some guarantees can be offered to placate Irish voters. The Irish government is expected to present a plan for breaking the impasse at a summit of EU leaders next month. There is speculation that another referendum may be held in Ireland. The treaty was originally meant to be in place in January 2009 - well ahead of the European Parliament elections in June 2009. BBConline, November 21, 2008 EVENT COMMENT And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay. BIBLE QUOTE (Daniel 2:41) Let us not forget one thing. The Lord Jesus Christ returns when there is a divided kingdom in the area of Europe. In Nebuchadnezzar’s dream there was an image representing the different empires that would follow ancient Babylon. There was a 4 th empire, that of Rome, represented by the iron legs. But there was NOT a 5 th empire. There was no 5 th metal to the image. The iron continued to the feet but was mixed with clay. This mixture represented a “divided” kingdom. Clay represent MAN and possibly “people power” ie democracy. The iron represents the empire of Rome. Democracy (clay) is stopping the Iron empire uniting. The people voted against Europe uniting. It remains divided. Revelation 17:12 also says they do NOT receive a kingdom as yet…

US global dominance 'set to wane' The NIC also commented on Europe. The EU is predicted to become a "hobbled giant", unable to turn its economic power into diplomatic or military muscle. It also warned that global warming, along with rising populations and economic growth will put additional strains on natural resources, fuelling conflict around the globe as countries compete for them. All these things fit remarkably into Bible prophecy. America as a “young lion” of Ezekiel 38 and the “king of the south” in Daniel 11 is portrayed as weak and unable to stop the Russian advance. Europe as we have already said is divided when Christ returns. The report calls Europe a “hobbled giant”. What is Nebuchadnezzar's image if not a hobbled giant! Surely an image made of metals with feet a mixture of iron and clay is “hobbled”! Finally the report speaks of conflict and nations rising up against each other. The Bible foretold these things – it gives us hope God’s plan is certain and sure. US economic, military and political dominance is likely to decline over the next two decades, according to a new US intelligence report on global trends. The National Intelligence Council (NIC) predicts China, India and Russia will increasingly challenge US influence. It also says the dollar may no longer be the world's major currency, and food and water shortages will fuel conflict. However, the report concedes that these outcomes are not inevitable and will depend on the actions of world leaders. It will make sombre reading for President-elect Barack Obama, the BBC's Jonathan Beale in Washington says, as it paints a bleak picture of the future of US influence and power. BBConline, November 21, 2008 EVENT COMMENT For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. BIBLE QUOTE (Matthew 24:7)

Fires ravage California again Fire is often mentioned in relation to the final judgements of God. God used water in the days of Noah to judge the world. God will use fire for the final judgement. Peter speaking in Acts 2 says that God “will show wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:… before that great and notable day of the Lord come: And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” We surely see (literally) great signs in the earth. Fire and billows of smoke! NOW is the time for us to call on the name of the Lord. Around 1,000 homes went up in flames as three wildfires raged in California over the past six days. The fires blazed through parts of Los Angeles, Orange County and Montecito, forcing an estimated 50,000 people to evacuate. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger described the damage left behind as “Armageddon” after flying over the affected areas. The number of blazes in California this year is expected to be around double that of last year. This increase is largely a result of a two-year drought coupled with higher- than-average temperatures. California’s fire season used to start in August and continue until the end of the year, but now the fire season is year-round. A spokesman for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in Idaho, Ken Frederick, declared that California has entered into a “mega-fire era” and called the state the epicentre of wildfire activity this year. The rise in wildfires is not limited to California. According to the National Interagency Fire Centre, since 2000 the United States as a whole has experienced six of the top 10 busiest fire seasons since records began to be kept back in 1960. The Trumpet, November 19, 2008 EVENT COMMENT Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. BIBLE QUOTE (2 Peter 3:6-7)
