1 IB Freshman Project Course Outline Lynne Newsome Lydia Velazquez Cypress Creek Highschool

2 Thinking Globally IB freshman will understand that they are global citizens in this large planet. They need to be able to think globally and act locally. This will be displayed through their freshman project.

3 Freshman Project Purpose In effort for the students to become aware of education as a global issue they must recognize: Not every child has the opportunity for education Education is the most important component to elevating your standard of living Education is the great equalizer

4 Sequence Literacy Quadrants What does education look like? What it look like to not have an education? What does it look like to be an IB student? How does it feel to be an IB student? Introduction documentary Reflection Journal

6 Reflective Journal Students will reflect daily on different topics correlating with the documentary. What did you learn? How did it make you feel? How can you inspire change? How can you think globally and act locally?

7 Book Enrichment Several books will be used to inspire our students to think globally. The books overall theme will be education and perseverance. Through their understanding of the material the students will be motivated to act locally.

8 Think Globally The Aspire Book Project works to supply books to underprivileged and impoverished schools around the world in an effort to increase literacy, advance education, and empower individuals and communities.

9 Act Locally Students will do two book drives this year, they will do one in November for the Aspire Project and one later in the year to donate books to one of our local homeless shelters.

10 Culminating Project Service Project Each class will organize their own service project. Students will pick a topic of global importance and will develop a service project to be implemented locally. Students will begin to incorporate CAS learning outcomes and reflections.

11 Culminating Project cont. As the final writing activity, students will write a story that deals with their experience becoming a global citizen. The story may be; A fictional story A poem A personal reflective writing
