3 From the Class President Fellow Classmates- We are halfway through the semester and things seem to be well. We are all passing (so far) and there doesn’t seem to be any glitches at this point. Now that we are making the newsletter available electronically, I am going back to my original plan of two profiles a month. Thanks, Travis, for reminding me of this. This will allow us to get to know more about each other much faster. There will be a few editions that may have one or no profiles to have room for more pictures or articles for major events (parties, semester end, etc.) We should know more about the summer class soon. We are waiting for the EMIS department to give us more information. I have submitted our preliminary dates and asked for a chance to review those dates if it was determined we could have consecutive classes (Fri.-Sat.). Should you have any questions, concerns, or ideas feel free to contact me. 4 March Profile One: Chris Anderson Chris Anderson was born in Memphis, TN on September 7, 1963. From age 9mo- 6yrs Chris lived in Orlando, FL. She went to Disney World the year it opened and learned to walk on Interstate-4 while it was being built…where her garage had stood before. From 7-8 Chris lived in Sarasota, FL a location where her great-great-great- grandfather Isaac Redd started the Baptist denomination in the state of Florida. At age 9 she moved to Vicksburg, MS. By the age of 15, Chris started junior college. She recalls at that time the entire campus’ computing resources consisted of two teletype machines. Chris then attended Mississippi State University (editor’s note: Go Dawgs!) where she was a Summer Co- op for the Core of Engineers in Vicksburg, MS during 1980. There she performed volume/channel mapping of a Mississippi reservoir where the data included depth readings - one punchcard per data point; one data point every 10ft in two dimensions; the output was a cartography map of the entire reservoir. She also was a two year co-op with the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA from 1981 to 1983 where she supported re-entry analysis for Columbia after its first (ever) shuttle flight (lost tiles, etc.) Chris graduated from MSU in 1984 with her B.S. in Electrical Engineering. Chris came to Texas after graduation and began working for General Dynamics on a high- dollar program that shall remain nameless. In 1991, Chris took a sabbatical to spend time with her growing family. During that time she taught advanced math, English, and computer at a Christian school. Second Birthday - 1965 Third Grade - 1970 Chris and her sister had sons born 6 days apart (Son Andrew-in blue; Nephew Jacob-in white), Family cat - "Tucker“, Daughters Terri & Sharie

5 March Profile One: Chris Anderson In 2000, Chris returned to Air Force Plant 4 as contract labor for Lockheed Martin. After three years, she became a direct employee. Her work has included support of ATF - now YF-22, F16 - Block 25/30 (still flying), and Lockheed - Integrated Test Station design / F16 - Block 60 Avionics Integration. Currently, Chris works in UAE Block 60 Avionics Integration -- Core Processors, Interface, & MMI (6E14120). Chris keeps busy considering she is married and has 4 kids: Carrie – 18, Terri – 12, Sharie – 10, and Andrew – 6mo. Chris’ favorite foods are pepperoni pizza, pot roast with the works, and cantaloupe. Other than the kids, her hobbies include computers, Sci-Fi / Fantasy, and church. Terri in the back yard during the recent snow day, Chris and son Andrew after his 1 st haircut, Chris’ favorite pic from the Internet - 8,000 light-years into the cosmos with the Hubble Space Telescope - "Eye of God" Nebula Carol Rice, Chris’ oldest daughter, graduated as 2003 Valedictorian of Springtown High School. She is a National Merit Scholar and was awarded a $12K scholarship from Lockheed Martin as a Lockheed Corporate Scholar. She scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT and the equivalent 80/80 on the PSAT. She is a freshman at Texas A&M University majoring in Computer Engineering with a minor in Electrical Engineering.

6 March Profile Two: Laura Boyle Laura Boyle was born in Houston, Texas in 1970. She considers Houston to be her hometown. The great Johnson Space Center (JSC), located just south of downtown Houston in Clear Lake, TX, and the history of Space Programs at the JSC NASA facility is what helped fuel Laura’s desire to go into aerospace engineering. Laura graduated high school in June of 1988 and began attending the University of Texas at Austin in the fall of 1988. While at the University of Texas at Austin, Laura worked for a BS in Aerospace Engineering. Laura enjoyed all the greatness that UT Austin, and the city of Austin has to offer: college football games, 6th street, Lake Travis, Zilker Park, volleyball with other ASE’s on Fridays at Pease Park, and intramural softball. She was active in a few engineering societies, including American Institute of Astronautics and Aeronautics (AIAA). Laura was treasurer of AIAA her last year at UT Austin. One of the best decisions that Laura made while attending UT Austin was to become a part of the Co-operative Engineering Program. Laura completed 4 Co-op terms, between 1990 – 1992, with Unisys Houston Operations. Unisys was a subcontractor to the then prime contractor, Rockwell, on the Space Transportation System Operations Contract (STSOC) in the Clear Lake, Johnson Space Center area. She worked as an associate software engineer on the sim software tool used to create initialization loads (i-loads) for the Space Shuttle. Unfortunately, a bad economy and hiring freeze kept Laura from getting a full time job with Unisys.

7 March Profile Two: Laura Boyle Laura took a job with Bell Helicopter located in Hurst, Texas upon graduating in the summer of 1993. Her first job at Bell was in the Cost Engineering group, where she was a cost engineering member on various Integrated Product Teams (IPTs). After 8 months in the cost group, she was made Lead Cost Engineer on the commercial 407 helicopter development project, which allowed her to relocate for 1 year to the Bell Commercial facility in Mirabel, Quebec Canada. Upon return the DFW area, Laura decided to pursue other opportunities at Bell. She became a Flight Test Engineer on the V-22 Osprey first EMD article in January 1996. In May of the same year, she met her future husband, Eric, at a Bell Helicopter happy hour. After a year in the Flight Test group, an opportunity in the Rotor Design Group came up. The last 2.5 of Laura’s almost 6 year career at Bell was spent as a Rotor mechanical system designer on various research and development programs at Bell. She created engineering models and drawings in CATIA V3, V4, and Unigraphics. With almost 6 years at Bell, Laura left to pursue a software engineering position on the Center-TRACON (Terminal Radar Approach Control) Automation System, aka CTAS, contract for the FAA with a company called Advancia. Advancia was a subcontractor to the prime, Northrop Grumman. As a Principal Software Engineer, Laura was responsible for development and site testing of adaptation files that configured a NASA software tool called pFAST (passive Final Approach Spacing Tool) for the Minneapolis/St. Paul TRACON. After September 11, 2001, the FAA cut funding for the CTAS contract. Laura pursued a job at Lockheed Martin that combined her software and mechanical design skills and landed the ideal job in the CAD (Computer Aided Design) Development group in June, 2002. She works with software customizations for the LM Aero environment for the COTS tools, CATIA V5. This involves software prototyping, requirements and specification development, coordination with LM EIS on the creation of advanced CATIA V5 customizations, as well as the documentation that goes along with these software tools. Laura has been married to Eric Boyle since June 2, 2001. Laura enjoys traveling with her husband, running, hanging out with friends, and watching college football in the fall. She hopes in one not too distant fall season to see her beloved Longhorns beat OU in football and have a shot at a national championship, before she is too old to enjoy it.

8 Team Questions What do I need to do for tuition reimbursement? (REPRINT) Begin by downloading Form c-551 from the Corporate forms library. Fill out all of the personal information. You will need to go to the following SMU website http://engr.smu.edu/emis/Executive_Programs/EMSSE/emsse.html and print course descriptions for all classes in the Executive Master’s curriculum. Also print out the program description from the above web page. The cost per class is $2287.50. You know what you paid for your books, so include that cost on the form. Also, request reimbursement for your application fee. Rie will be mailing me receipts for those of you who paid by credit card. As soon as I get them, I will get them to you either internally or at class in February. Mail this packet of information to EFS (address on form) for preliminary approval. You will need to include the $2500 deposit fee on this form. Through some additional research, this fee is part of actual tuition. SMU understands that tuition rates will increase by 3-7% a semester. To keep our tuition standard for the remaining semesters, the $2500 fee will be required this first semester. After the two lines of class tuition, add a line for tuition deposit. Include the word document from David that explains the tuition deposit. This requirement will no longer occur after this semester. Yes, EFS will cover this. This will put you over the $5250 mark, so be sure and add a piece of paper requesting full tax exemption. http://engr.smu.edu/emis/Executive_Programs/EMSSE/emsse.html How are we spending the $250 class allotment? We are still entertaining ideas for using our “social fund.” Recommendations have been made to purchase lottery tickets. There is an idea for saving all of it and spending $1000 during the last semester for a big bash. Please submit any ideas you have. I am itching to spend money that is not mine!! I can’t find Systems Engineering Tools in the course descriptions. Is it still a class? If not, what is replacing it? Systems Engineering Tools is still a class. Dr. Stracener is working to produce a course description for us. It will be passed on to the class as soon as it is complete.
