You may access EDLINE through QOHS.ORG

If you do not have a password, follow the instructions on the EDLINE link

Things You Should Know (Con’t) Attendance Policy Attendance Policy –Students are permitted 4 Unexcused absences before losing credit –An absence is unexcused if a note does not accompany the student…it MUST be turned into the Attendance Secretary to be excused –3 Tardies equal 1 absence –Upon the 5 th absence a student loses credit for that class.  AN APPEAL CAN BE MADE TO GET CREDIT BACK but there are often objectives that must be met in order to get this credit…ie. No more tardies/absences

Things You Should Know (Con’t) Eligibility Eligibility –This is the first time Freshman must meet eligibility requirements –A student MUST have a 2.0 GPA with no more than 1 E in order to participate in extra- curricular activities. –This is calculated each QUARTER  1 st Quarter is for Fall Playoffs & Winter Sports  2 nd Quarter is for Winter Sports midseason and Spring Sports  3 rd Quarter is for Spring Sports midseason  4 th Quarter is for Spring Playoffs and Fall Sports

Things You Should Know (Con’t) Contacting Staff Contacting Staff –You may work with teachers/Counselors/Administrators via email or phone…it is suggested to use email as it is quickest form of communication for staff –Setting up Parent Teacher Conferences  You may set up a conference with all teachers through your Counselor…please contact the appropriate counselor to set up such meetings

Things You Should Know (Con’t) Graduations Req’s Graduations Req’s –4 Credits of English –3 Credits of Science (Bio, Physical, Other) –3 Credits of Soc Studies (US, MWH, NSL) –4 Credits of Math (Geo, Alg, Other, Other) –1 Credit of PE, Arts, & Tech and.5 Health –2 Credits of Foreign Lang or Adv Tech or Trade  OR 4 Credits in OJT

Lunch & Learn We’d like to remind everyone that we have an extended lunch We’d like to remind everyone that we have an extended lunch –Lunch this year is 45 minutes This is designed to allow your sons/daughters time to see teachers & still have enough time to eat/socialize This is designed to allow your sons/daughters time to see teachers & still have enough time to eat/socialize Many students that need the help are not using this time effectively Many students that need the help are not using this time effectively –If grades are low, this is the first & best solution

Lunch & Learn (continued) We only ask the students to go for 20 minutes of the time…leaving 25 minutes to eat/socialize (the length of most school’s lunches) We only ask the students to go for 20 minutes of the time…leaving 25 minutes to eat/socialize (the length of most school’s lunches) This is a great opportunity for students to take responsibility for their learning…it also shows the teachers that they care about the grade! This is a great opportunity for students to take responsibility for their learning…it also shows the teachers that they care about the grade!

G.P.A. Remember G.P.A.’s fluctuate throughout the semester. Remember G.P.A.’s fluctuate throughout the semester. –You will see a different G.P.A. each quarter…these are then averaged with the Exam –For example a 1 st Quarter grade of an A is a 4.00, a 2 nd Quarter grade of a B is a 3.00. This averages out to a 3.50 (4.00+3.00 / 2 = 3.50) –This is then combined with the exam grade if an exam is required for the course (25% of the grade)

G.P.A. (continued) Also note that if an exam is NOT required, then the grade follows the trend of the 2 quarter grades Also note that if an exam is NOT required, then the grade follows the trend of the 2 quarter grades –Example: 1 st Quarter A, 2 nd Quarter B = Semester grade of B…it follows the trend the student has set.  One Exception is if there is a larger gap between grades…then they are averaged ie. A and C average to a B.

G.P.A. (continued) Another thing to watch…there are 2 G.P.A.’s on every student’s transcript Another thing to watch…there are 2 G.P.A.’s on every student’s transcript –One is the normal GPA and the other is the WGPA (weighted GPA). –The WGPA is affected by the honors and AP courses your child takes…these carry more weight because they are more difficult  For example…a grade of a B in an honors course is the equivalent of an A in an on-level course –This is yet another reason to take more rigorous courses

EXAMS Exams run from January 16-22 Exams run from January 16-22 –Periods 1&2 Monday, 3&4 Tuesday, 5&6 Wednesday, 7 Thursday (all days are half days) –Makeup Exams January 23 rd by appointment Exams makeup 25% of the semester grade and are averaged with 1 st & 2 nd Quarter Exams makeup 25% of the semester grade and are averaged with 1 st & 2 nd Quarter

Examples of Grade Distributions

Looking to 2 nd Semester Course Rigor Course Rigor –What do colleges & universities say Registering for Sophomore classes Registering for Sophomore classes –Choosing the right combination

Registration Registration for Sophomore courses begins in January Registration for Sophomore courses begins in January We can’t stress enough how important RIGOR is We can’t stress enough how important RIGOR is –One of the top priorities for Colleges & Universities is RIGOR…they want to see AP & Honors courses

RIGOR!! The University of Maryland states: The University of Maryland states: “Each applicant is assessed on the basis of achievements and potential in a broad range of academic categories, viewed in the context of the opportunities and challenges the applicant faced. These categories include: “Each applicant is assessed on the basis of achievements and potential in a broad range of academic categories, viewed in the context of the opportunities and challenges the applicant faced. These categories include: 1. Strength of educational performance, as measured by the nature and rigor of high school curriculum and academic achievements.” University of Maryland Website, 2007

RIGOR!!!! The ACT (a well known college entrance exam) reported the following: The ACT (a well known college entrance exam) reported the following: –“now it is clear that just taking the right number of courses is no longer enough to ensure that students will be ready for college when they graduate. Students must take a number of additional higher-level courses in high school to have a reasonable chance of succeeding in college courses, and even that does not guarantee success.” ACT NEWS, 2007

Registration (continued)  Remember, your son or daughter is being compared to other students nationwide!  Build a Transcript (Resume) that stands out!  Also remember, we don’t want to overwork your sons or daughters…choose a reasonable number of honors/ap courses  You know your son or daughter best…will 4 or 5 high level courses be too many?

PSAT & REGISTRATION The PSAT is a valuable tool The PSAT is a valuable tool –Not only do colleges use the PSAT results for student searches, but also for scholarship opportunities –QOHS also uses the PSAT results to help determine where your child should be placed for next years courses PLEASE stress these points to your child!!!
