2 M AKE SURE YOU HAVE THESE KEY FACTS ON YOUR MIND - MAPS FROM M ONDAY ’ S LESSON Lived 1813-1873 Very strict protestant upbringing and later a missionary. However, he only managed to convert one Africa, Sechele, the chief of the Kwena people of Botswana. Sechele was baptised. However, he kept his 5 wives. Explored the Victorian falls, Zambezi, Nyasaland and the Nile. Lost contact with the outside world for 6 years from 1865-1871. Stanley found him.

3 L IVINGSTONE ’ S C ONTRIBUTION Responsible for the first stages of exploration What would follow this? Responsible for influencing Christianisation, Commerce and Civilisation What would follow this? Livingstone discovered and mapped central Africa. Missionaries followed, as did the African Lakes Company. Then, this was bought by the British South Africa Company. They then wanted land in Zimbabwe (Matabeleland). They claimed that the South African white settlers (the Boers) were trying to take over this land and persuaded the British to declare it as a protectorate – which meant to be protected by the British and to be part of the British Empire.

5 Case Study 1. In 1876 Stanley had a letter published in the Daily Telegraph in London in which he made a plea for missionaries to come to Buganda (modern day Uganda) saying that the King was interested in Christianity but the kingdom was currently Muslim. Funding poured in. In 1877 the first missionaries arrived, including the protestant Scotsman Mackay. Civil War erupted in the kingdom over what religion the Bugandans should follow. Eventually a British protestant bishop was murdered in 1885 who tried to enforce a Protestant conversion. The British were lobbied even more as the Civil War continued. In 1888 a semi-official presence was established with the presence of the Imperial British East Africa Company, they were particularly interested in trade and keeping order. By the early 1890s the IBEAC were in serious financial trouble, and in 1894 the British government reluctantly declared a protectorate over Uganda. 1.What evidence shows us that Uganda was colonised because of Christianisation? 2.What evidence shows us that Uganda was colonised because of Commerce? 3.Was Christrianisation or Commerce more important in this example? 4.How significant was Livingstone for its colonisation? Ext. Was the colonisation of Uganda caused by events in the metropole or in the periphery?

7 1.What evidence is there to show that Malawi was colonised due to Christianisation? 2. What evidence is there to show that Malawi was colonised for other reasons? 3. Which reason do you believe was most significant for it’s colonisation? 4. How significance was Livingstone for its colonisation? Ext. Was the colonisation of the area around Lake Nyasa mainly driven by the metropole or the periphery? Case Study 2. Livingstone was the one who first explored the area around Lake Malawi and tried to explore the river Zambezi which flows out of it. The area around Lake Nyasa, present-day Malawi, had powerful slave-traders. As a result of Livingstone’s legacy people argued for intervention to crush the slave-traders. When the British government finally declared a protectorate in 1889, it was mainly to try to stop the Portuguese encroaching from the East, although the missionaries provided them with a convenient humanitarian argument.
