3 University Access Exams  6 exercises, one way of exam chosen among 5 different fields of knowledge  One single mark, valid in every study in every public Spanish university  Mandatory: 4 exercises  Voluntary: up to 4 extra exercises  No constraints about fields of knowledge to choose the subjects  Mark varies and depends on the study, on the field of knowledge and on the University BEFORE 2010FROM 2010

4 University Access Exams General Phase (GP)  4 exercises (5 if co-official language)  General Phase Mark (GPM) is the average of the exercises (each up to 10 points)  Baccalaureate Average Mark (BAM) is obtained at High School (up to 10)  If GPM > 4 AND 0.6 BAM GPM > 5 the exams is passed

5 University Access Exams Specific Phase (SP)  Up to 4 extra exercises  Only counts when mark is > 5  Two years of validity  Exercises add a plus to the mark according to the formula 0.6 BAM GPM + a M1 + b M2 Being M1 and M2 the two marks adding more weight, and a and b weighting coefficients depending on University, studies and field of knowledge

6 University Access Exams Specific Phase (SP): weights  Coefficients a and b varies. The Ministry fixes a list of subjects that can weight for degrees belonging to each field of knowledge. For instance, Art Design weights for degrees belonging to Arts and Humanities (e.g. Arts, Philosophy) but doest not weight for degrees belonging to Health Sciences (e.g. Medicine, Nursery)  When a subject weights the minimum value for coefficient is 0.1  Universities can increase up to 0.2 the combinations of subject-degree they decide (e.g. Biology and Chemistry weights 0.2 for all degrees in Health Sciences in Oviedo, except for Psychology where the maximum weight is attained by Biology and Mathematics)

7 Example  Alice and Bob both perform 8 points in the Baccalaureate and 7 points in the General Phase (Alice choosing Earth and Environmental Sciences and Bob choosing Chemistry)  In the Specific Phase:  Alice and Bob apply for Electrical Engineering and Medicine in the University of Oviedo. 9 Admission marks 48 public Universities in Spain, more than 1500 different degrees, more than 30 subjects to choose among in the exams….

10 Web simulator: the idea  Configurable tool that helps to easily calculate the admission mark to the University of Oviedo  Given the marks and the subjects, and once choosen the degrees the student want to study, the simulator produces the admission mark to each degree  The simulator also returns the so-called cutting mark (the admission mark of the person who entered last year in the last position, since in Spain public universities fix the number of available positions)  https://sies.uniovi.es/simulador-pau

12 Web simulator: the idea  Started on November 2009  New version uploaded March 2011  Since 2010 many other universities has opened its own simulator (http://siou.um.es/ponderaciones)  No national-wide simulator, by now.

13 Web simulator: the experience  Poll: over 90% of Baccalaureate students in Asturias know the web simulator  Since last version was uploaded, the average number of visits/day is 109  The Access exams this year have been 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd june 2011, since then, the average number of visits has been  The maximum number of visits/day is attained 8 th june (the day the marks were published) with 1437 visits

14 Web simulator: the experience  Average time in the site: 4 minutes  Average pageviews: 5.56  Loyalty: 67% are new visitors  Origin: almost all visits come from Spain, but also visits from Southern America, Western Europe and Northern Africa  Inside Spain, around ¾ of visits come from Asturias, being Madrid the top foreign visiting territory  This lead us to redefine our enrollment strategy: where to go and what to do there?
