July 12 - 18, 2009 “If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.” (Ezekiel 33:6, New International Version) Weekly World Watch Andy Walton’s To skip the introductory slides and go straight to this weeks developments click here.
What is a Weekly World Watch? Israel: The continuing conflict in the Middle East and focus on Jerusalem. Europe: Its developing union, both political and religious. Russia: Its return to anti-Western ways as Bible prophecy’s “king of the north.” The UK and the US: Bible prophecy’s “king of the south.” Moral standards in decline and violence on the increase. WWW presentations in PowerPoint can be ordered as audio/visual CDs by clicking here. Move your mouse to place the cursor on the blue link and click.clicking here The idea is simple. It is to look at current events and compare them to events spoken of in the Bible.. I hope to build up a picture of God’s hand working in the affairs of this world. God is bringing about a day when all nations will be gathered to Jerusalem to battle. At that time God will send His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, back to this earth. Jesus will then establish God’s kingdom on earth. This kingdom will last for ever. This is our hope and the reason we watch. Increasing natural disasters: including earthquake, famine etc The following six themes will appear repeatedly in WWW:
HEADLINE EVENT COMMENT News Photo The source of the headline and the date are included. Each WWW looks at a few key developments that have happened during the past week. It is in no way meant to be exhaustive – just a look at those events I saw as significant from a Biblical point of view. What is in a Weekly World Watch? BIBLE QUOTE This is normally one verse which backs up why the event that has occurred is interesting from a Biblical perspective. Please read in its context. Unless stated otherwise, all quotes are from the King James Version. (Book, chapter, and verse) This is straight from a news report that caught my eye because it looked significant from a Biblical perspective, usually that of prophecy. Every WWW event slide has the following format. To reveal each block of text just left click your mouse or press the space bar. You control when it appears. This is the reporter’s description of the event. It is always a direct quotation from the news report and reflects the understanding of the reporter and editors. This is my comment on why the event is interesting to a Bible student. The intention of the WWW is to offer brief Biblical perspectives without going into detail. If more detail is desired, please e-mail me: (email@example.com).
This Week’s Developments To print any of the event slides that follow, click the picture on the upper right US/Russian tensions rise over Georgia Israeli navy prepares for potential attack on Iran Iran in mass production of long-range missiles Barack Obama meets Jewish leaders Ultra-Orthodox Jews riot over arrest July 12 - 18, 2009 Time report on the West Bank settlers
US/Russian tensions rise over Georgia We reported last week about the meeting between Obama and Medvedev. We said that though on the face of it all was smiles - in fact the distrust and suspicion remained. We noted how they spoke of a safer world with the reduction of a few nuclear weapons. In fact this was a false promise (with hardly any in truth being decommissioned) and the reality is the world has never been in such a precarious position. And so this week we see the real picture. Just days after the “friendly” meeting both nations begin military exercises in and around Georgia. As the report says “this is a stark change in tone from last week”! The Bible says there will be a king of the north (Russia) and king of the south (USA etc) battle at the end. And there will be… US/Russian tensions rise over Georgia as 2 nations hold military exercises nearby. A U.S. warship anchored off Georgia for joint military exercises Tuesday while Russian jets pounded mock targets nearby in a sign of lingering tensions over the former Soviet nation turned U.S. ally. The U.S. and Russian manoeuvres marked a stark change in tone from meetings last week between President Barack Obama and Russia's Dmitry Medvedev, who expressed hope for repairing relations that have sunk to a post-Cold War low. The guided missile destroyer the USS Stout on Tuesday anchored off Batumi, where its captain, Commander Mark J. Oberley, was welcomed ashore with Georgian music and wine. The Stout is the sixth U.S. warship to visit Georgian ports since the war. A couple of hours after the events in Batumi, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev peered through binoculars to watch jets fly over Russia's Black Sea port of Novorossiisk and fire at nonexistent ground targets. Associated Press, July 14, 2009 EVENT COMMENT And both these kings’ hearts shall be to do mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table; but it shall not prosper: for yet the end shall be at the time appointed BIBLE QUOTE (Daniel 11:27) Commander Marc Oberley of the U.S. guided missile destroyer USS Stout, left
Israeli navy prepares for potential attack on Iran Israel has begun to send warships and a nuclear capable submarine through the Suez Canal into the Red Sea. This is highly unusual and would probably have required cooperation with Egypt. It is worth noting the report above that says Israel’s relations with Egypt have grown increasingly strong. Egypt is an Arab nation and we might expect Egypt therefore to side with Syria or maybe Iran. But the Bible makes clear that Egypt (as well as Israel) is overthrown by the invasion of Russia. Egypt was originally the king of the south’s (Ptolemies) territory. It is fitting that the new king of the north (Russia) attacks Egypt. Two Israeli missile class warships have sailed through the Suez Canal ten days after a submarine capable of launching a nuclear missile strike, in preparation for a possible attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities. The deployment into the Red Sea, confirmed by Israeli officials, was a clear signal that Israel was able to put its strike force within range of Iran at short notice. It came before long-range exercises by the Israeli air force in America later this month and the test of a missile defence shield at a US missile range in the Pacific Ocean. Israel has strengthened ties with Arab nations who also fear a nuclear-armed Iran. In particular, relations with Egypt have grown increasingly strong this year over the “shared mutual distrust of Iran”, according to one Israeli diplomat. Israeli naval vessels would likely pass through the Suez Canal for an Iranian strike. “This is preparation that should be taken seriously. Israel is investing time in preparing itself for the complexity of an attack on Iran. These manoeuvres are a message to Iran that Israel will follow up on its threats,” an Israeli defence official said. The Times, July 16, 2009 EVENT COMMENT He [king of the north] shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape. But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt BIBLE QUOTE (Daniel 11:42,43)
Iran in mass production of long-range missiles There are reports this week that Iran is just months away from being able to test a nuclear bomb. International Atomic Energy Agency chief Mohamed Elbaradei has repeatedly warned that his agency cannot guarantee that Iran is not hiding nuclear activities. Iranian nuclear expert David Albright on Friday put the chances that such a secret site exists at "50-50”. On top of this threat to Israel, Iran has moved into mass production of long range missiles. It is interesting that the Bible speaks of the Medes (ancient Iranians) making “bright arrows”. Modern days Medes are doing the same. A missile in the sky certainly looks like a bright arrow! Iran is slowing down the manufacture of the Shehab-3 surface missile in favour of mass production of the more accurate two-stage 2,000-kilometer range Sejil II ballistic missile powered with solid fuel, which was successfully tested on May 20, DEBKAfile's military and Iranian sources report. More than 1,000 new Sejil IIs are projected to come off production lines in five years, at the rate of 200 a year. Western sources say the Iranians are over-ambitious and can deliver no more than 10-15 missiles a year at present, although with a huge multi-billion dollar investment they might raise output to 30. Liquid-fuel missiles like the Shehab take hours to prepare for firing, during which time they are exposed to oversight by US and Israel spy satellites, whereas the Sejil because it is powered by solid fuel has the huge advantage of stealth. DEBKAfile's military sources add that Iran is going all out to fill its arsenal with Sejil II missiles for outwitting Israel's Arrow interceptors if and when they attack Israel. Debkafile, July 13, 2009 EVENT COMMENT The LORD hath brought forth our righteousness: come, and let us declare in Zion the work of the LORD our God. Make bright the arrows; gather the shields: the LORD hath raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes BIBLE QUOTE (Jeremiah 51:10,11)
Barack Obama meets Jewish leaders over 'tough line' on Israel President Barack Obama has called a meeting with leaders of American Jewish groups who are concerned at his new tough line on Israel and perceived softness on Iran. Iran's nuclear threat and the president's demand for a freeze on Israeli settlement expansion in the Palestinian West Bank were expected to dominate the meeting at White House. Officials had originally tried to keep the meeting secret after it was arranged late last week, but hastily added it to the official schedule after the news leaked out. Though it is not unusual for a US president to meet Jewish groups, the timing of the event reflected rising anxiety among a constituency that overwhelmingly supported Mr Obama in last year's election that he would not be the most dependable of allies. "American Jews more or less agree with the president on settlements, but it's the focus on criticising Israel that's disconcerting," said an organisation leader. Daily Telegraph, July 13, 2009 EVENT COMMENT For the indignation of the LORD is upon all nations, and his fury upon all their armies: he hath utterly destroyed them, he hath delivered them to the slaughter. BIBLE QUOTE (Isaiah 34:2) The new US administration under Obama has definitely hardened its attitude towards Israel. At the same time it has softened its attitude to Iran and Syria. Israel has always been able to rely on the world’s only superpower. Both financially and militarily. Israel only has nuclear weapons because America assisted them in this. Many times in the Bible we read of ALL nations coming against Israel. ALL nations being judged. See Isaiah 34:2, Joel 3:2, Zechariah 14:2 etc So ALL nations battle over Jerusalem. ALL nations are guilty. Joel 3:2 speaks of the land (Israel) being divided (parted). Who divided the land? ALL nations. Though there are 2 sides to the battle NEITHER side is on Israel’s side. We see this aspect develop.
Ultra-Orthodox Jews riot over arrest Ultra-Orthodox Jews throwing rocks and firecrackers clashed with police using horses and water cannon in Jerusalem on Thursday, in the third day of rioting over the arrest of a mentally ill Hasidic woman who authorities say was starving her child. Late in the day, the unrest spread to a city outside Jerusalem with a large ultra- Orthodox population, where dozens of protesters tried to block a road. The clashes in Jerusalem involved hundreds of rioters and spread to several ultra- Orthodox neighbourhoods of the city. They are the latest sign of increasing tensions between authorities, who allege the woman starved her 3-year-old son over several years, and the insular ultra-Orthodox community, which often resents outside interference in its affairs. Hospital spokeswoman Yael Bossem-Levy confirmed that the woman is suffering from a condition known as Munchausen syndrome by proxy, in which a person deliberately makes another sick. Her child is hospitalized. Daily News, July 6 & 9, 2009 EVENT COMMENT Thus saith the Lord GOD of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and of the land of Israel… her land may be desolate from all that is therein, because of the violence of all them that dwell therein. BIBLE QUOTE (Ezekiel 12:19) Jerusalem is a divided city. Jerusalem means “city of peace” and yet it is not. Currently controlled by the Jews one might think that there would be relative peace in Jerusalem. But there is not. Jew is fighting Jew. This week there have been days of rioting. Not between Palestinian and Jew but between Jewish police and Ultra-Orthodox Jews. Tensions between authorities and ultra-Orthodox Jews, who make up a third of Jerusalem's residents, have been high since voters replaced an ultra-Orthodox mayor with a secular candidate in a November election. Ultra-Orthodox Jews and authorities have clashed repeatedly over a decision by Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat to open a municipal parking lot on the Sabbath! Only Jesus Christ’s return can sort this mess. Click here to watch scenes in Jerusalem this week
Time report on the West Bank settlers In a hilltop suburb South of Jerusalem called Efrat, Sharon Katz serves a neat plate of sliced cake inside her five-bedroom house, surrounded by pomegranate, olive and citrus trees that she planted herself. She glances out the window at the hills where, she believes, David and Abraham once walked. "We are living in the biblical heartland," she sighs. The Netanyahu government, like its predecessors, makes a distinction between what it calls "legal" settlements like the Gush Etzion bloc (pop. 75,000) and "illegal" outposts deeper in the West Bank. Within sight of the Arab city of Nablus, settler Itay Zar, 33, lives in a two-room shanty with his wife and their five children, above a stretch of road at risk from Palestinian snipers. "We are on a mission," Zar tells TIME. "We didn't come here for fun, although we have fun sometimes. When we came here, this land was deserted. Since the Jews came back, it has started to flourish." We build small heavens here," he says. "We are the people of the Bible. If Obama fights what God has done in bringing the people of the Bible here from the four corners of the earth, he will fall. Now the question is, Who is the boss? God? Or Obama?" Time Magazine, July 18, 2009 EVENT COMMENT And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog BIBLE QUOTE (Ezekiel 38:16) It all comes down to this. Jewish people are living in the “West Bank”. The world (ALL nations) say they should not. They say this land is not for the Jews but the Palestinians. They say the these Jews should move out – dismantle these “illegal settlements”. On the other hand the Jews say that this land is theirs. That God has brought them back to live there. Look at the land and how it now flourishes – whereas before it was barren. At some point the whole world will go to war over this issue (and Jerusalem). The Bible is clear. God has indeed brought them back to live there. The land is HIS.
