On Sin, Salvation, and Good Works Chapter 4 Lusts

Married to Jesus? 1Co 6:16-17 What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh. 17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. Rev 19:7-8 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. 8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. ===================================================== Blood still on us? Rev 7:14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Washed in the blood. But once they are made righteous, there is no need for the blood. Rev 19:8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. It atones, cleans, washes, justifies, sanctifies, redeems (1 John 1:7, Rev 1:5). He sees the righteousness which Jesus put in us. 2Co 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. Clarifications 2

Rom 9:20-23 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? 21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? 22 What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: 23 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, God makes as a potter does his vessels, and chooses as a potter does his clay. He elects, he chooses his servants as you would choose a coffee mug. Act 9:15 But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel: 1Th 4:4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; WE ARE LIKENED TO CUPS by our maker! Your body, your flesh, is just a vessel. Jer 18:6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel. God dealing with Israel was a picture of how he deals with sinners today. Vessels 3

Psa 2:7-9 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. 8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. 9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. All our bodies are to the maker is a bunch of coffee mugs. Psa 31:12 I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel. Contained in it, but freed from the body when it is broken. Its not one than man has described. But one that God has described. Luk 11:39 And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness. Vessels 4

2Ti 2:19-22 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. 20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. 21 If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work. 22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. Vessels 5

Eph 2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. When you were unsaved both your flesh AND your mind had the same lusts. Eph 4:22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; Gal 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. That doesn’t mean that the flesh is rid of it. Rom 6:12-13 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. 13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. You shouldn’t let it PULL or YANK you. Your flesh is just an instrument. But it has its own desires. Think about a guitar. Lusts 6

Jas 4:1-3 From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? 2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. 3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. Without sinful lusts, would there be any violence? Coming from our members. And we are trying to satisfy the lusts of the flesh. Tit 2:12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 1Pe 1:14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: 1Pe 4:1-2 Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; 2 That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. You’ve ceased from sin, but you still have lusts in your flesh. And your purpose now is to serve God, not to satisfy the desires of the flesh. Lusts 7

Mar 4:18-19 And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, 19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. The lusts of your flesh are constantly trying to choke out your production for God. Rom 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Before salvation you were only led of the flesh. Jas 1:14-15 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. But the lusts of the flesh still try to pull you in the opposite direction. Lusts 8

Gal 5:16-18 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. 18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Are lusts evil? Lust is just like a force, a pull in one direction. Contrary to one another. Opposing forces. Cannot move in both directions. Gal 5:24-25 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. We are alive inside the new man (Spirit/spirit). But you are still called to walk in the Spirit. 1Co 10:5-6 But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. 6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. Yes you are saved, and yes you have liberty. But there is a very good reason that God doesn’t want you to give in to the lusts of the flesh. What is the main reason? Lusts 9

Mat 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Cannot move both directions at the same time. Mat 6:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Your heart is going to go in the direction that you are lusting after. Do you ever drive in the direction you are looking? Col 3:2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. You will go where you are setting your attention/affection. 10 Lusts

1Ti 1:18-19 This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare; 19 Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck: Your conscience does not stop functioning. It still convinces you that there is sin nearby. The only other force (lust) comes from the flesh. You‘ve give in to doing the lusts of the flesh. Paul says you will make yourself shipwrecked. 1Ti 1:20 Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme. God may stop trying to pull on you and instead give you up to be pulled in by Satan and the lusts of your flesh. 1Co 5:5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. The War 11

Heb 12:4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. Your focus is not to be striving against a pull in the wrong direction, but on strengthening the pull in the right direction. No maintained motion. 1Pe 4:2 That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. But the purpose of your life has changed. Gal 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. The only way to not be drawn by the lusts of your flesh is to beef up the lusts of the Spirit. Stop striving against sin on your own, that’s not your purpose anymore. Start strengthening the force in the opposite direction by living to the will of God. 1Pe 2:11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; It is the soul that needs to walk in the Spirit. The War 12

Chapter 4 Where we let off.. Flesh is an instrument Fleshly lusts war against the soul Led by the Spirit, Walk in the Spirit Lust after evil things, put away good conscience = Shipwreck

1Pe 5:10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. Imagine neither is winning? That will be very unsettling! 2Co 12:8-10 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. 9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong. When my flesh is weak, my soul is strong against it. Humility vs Pride. F = ma But how do we strengthen ourselves against the flesh? The War 14

1Co 8:8-12 But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse. 9 But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak. 10 For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols; 11 And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died? 12 But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ. Talking about knowledge of Christian liberties. But the stronger brother’s conscience is not weak, why? Luk 2:40 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him. Strength is put into our souls by knowledge and truth and wisdom... and how do you get that wisdom? The War 15

Joh 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. That’s where knowledge, truth, and wisdom come from. 1Co 12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; The Spirit is the distributor of wisdom and truth. Not everything you or I think we understand about the Bible comes from the Spirit of course. But if we are to add strength, it comes from the Holy Spirit and the word of truth. 1Co 2:10-13 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. How can you understand the mind of God unless you are given that knowledge from Him. The Holy Spirit in the teacher, is the guide, is the distributor of wisdom, knowledge, and truth... and where does he put it? The War 16

Eph 3:16-17 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith… The inner man needs to me strong in order to stand and then to walk in the Spirit (water). Psa 51:6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. Your soul (inner man) needs to be strengthened with wisdom and knowledge. 1Co 2:4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: His speech had Spirit and power in it. Not just the miracles, just the truth and wisdom. The War 17

1Co 2:5-6 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. 6 Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: Not the miracles of God, but the truth and wisdom of God. In spirit! In the word of God. The power that Paul demonstrated when he preached was wisdom from the Spirit. He SPOKE power and strength. Mic 3:8 But truly I am full of power by the spirit of the LORD, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his sin. If you want to preach the gospel to the lost, you need power from the Spirit. Joh 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. The words of God are that spirit. They are strength and power. If you are going to walk in the flesh, you need to eat of the flesh of this world. Likewise, to walk in the spirit, you need to eat of the spirit. The War 18

1Co 3:1-2 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. 2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. Spirit, gives truth, wisdom, knowledge, power and might. That’s what your inner man needs to be strengthened with to win that war. The War 19

Take-Aways You need knowledge/wisdom to feed and strengthen your inner man. Luk 4:4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. The word of God is how the Spirit distributed power and strength ==================================================== But its not about beating out the flesh in order to not sin and not anger God. Well then you are just standing still. That’s not what he wants. 1Co 10:27 If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake. Don’t set out to find more sins to fight against. Not our purpose anymore. Its about doing good to please him. Its about running the race upward. 20
