What is Sound Doctrine?

NT Verses on Sound Doctrine 1 Tim. 1:10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine 2 Tim. 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears Titus 1:9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. Titus 2:1 But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine.

What is Doctrine? Doctrine: Hebrew – “leqach” pronounced “leh- kakh” – teaching, learning, insight and also with the thing taught, teaching-power and persuasiveness Greek – “didache” – teaching, instruction, religious teaching, what is taught Matthew 7:28 – after Jesus shared parables on the kingdom of God and discussions of the desired “fruit” of Christians, this verse says that “the people were astonished at His doctrine”

Why Does “Sound” Mean? Sound: Hebrew – “towb” for “good doctrine in Pro. 4:2, pronounced tobe, meaning good, healthy, prosperous, happy (same word as God used in creation) Greek – “hygiaino”, pronounced “hu-gai- ee-noo”, meaning to be sound, well, in good health (root word for hygiene); for Christians, it means that views of doctrine are free from any mixture of error; also one who keeps the graces and is strong; sound, true, incorrupt What is your spiritual hygiene like? How healthy are you spiritually? Are you strong or weak and unhealthy?

Why Do We Need Sound Doctrine?  We need to be like the “tree planted by the water” in Psalm 1  The Bible commands us to in 2 Tim. 4:2 – “Preach the word: be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine”  The Bible says about itself in 2 Tim. 3:16 that “all Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”  Titus 2:7-8 says “In all things showing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, sound speech that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.”

Warning of Latter Days  Jesus in talking about the last days warned, “And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many…. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if possible, they shall deceive the very elect.” (Matt. 24:11, 24)  “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron … If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of sound doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained… (1 Timothy 4:1-2,6)

What Are the Ideologies We Battle Against with Sound Doctrine? Communism  Communism – Communist Manifesto (1848) by Karl Marx, makes the Government or the State “God”  The first book by Marx was “Unity of believers in Christ according to the Gospel of John 15:1-14: Unity’s meaning, unconditional necessity, and influence”  Later at age 18, Karl did not apply the doctrine he had learned in his youth – in a poem he wrote: “I have lost heaven And know that for sure. My soul, once faithful to God, Now is destined for hell.”

What Are the Ideologies We Battle Against with Sound Doctrine? Communism  Karl wrote a drama called “Oulanem”  He became involved in Satanic cult ritual on which the play is based  The dream of Karl Marx was a Satanic dream -- the elimination of all religions, and especially Christianity  Marx said “Religion is the opium of the masses.”

What Are the Ideologies We Battle Against with Sound Doctrine? Evolution  Evolution – On the Origin of Species (1859) by Charles Darwin, teaches that man evolved from animals, inferring that there is no Creator  Karl Marx was fond of the writings of Charles Darwin and used it to attack Christianity  Some Christians believe in evolution and that God used evolution  However, people who do not believe in God will use evolution to explain how there is no Creator God  God used a design and geometry in nature and in creation that proves His existence  The Psalmist says, “the heavens are telling the glory of God!”

What Are the Ideologies We Battle Against with Sound Doctrine? Communism under Lenin  Lenin led the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917  He wrote the following about the Soviet State: “The State is in our hands. And did it act this year according to the new economic policy as we desired? No, it didn’t. We don’t want to admit the following: It acted not as we desired. So how did it act? The machine jumped out of our hands: as if another person controlled it, and the machine didn’t go to the place where we directed it, but went to the place where that someone else dictated.”

What Are the Ideologies We Battle Against with Sound Doctrine? Lenin’s Tomb  Schusev, Soviet architect of Lenin’s tomb, may have used the Altar of Pergamos taken from Berlin to Moscow in 1948  The Altar of Pergamos was used in ancient times  Pergamos is referenced in Rev. 2:12-13: “And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges; I know thy words, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan’s seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth…”

What Are the Ideologies We Battle Against with Sound Doctrine? Nazism – National Socialism  Adolf Hitler wrote The Third Reich  Hitler wanted to create a thousand-year empire to follow the Holy Roman Empire (843-1806 AD) and the Second German Empire (1871-1918 AD)  The swastika symbol is a crooked or broken cross and in Greek means “lucky charm”  Nazism is based on anti-semitism (developed from an euthanasia movement), Pan-German Aryanism, and Social Darwinism  Albert Speer, First Architect of the Third Reich, Minister of Armaments, used the Pergamon Altar as the design pattern for the Zeppelintribüne (1934-37); the Fuhrer’s pulpit was in the center of the tribune

What Are the Ideologies We Battle Against with Sound Doctrine? Totalitarianism  Marxism and Socialism – forms of Communisms which lead to Totalitarianism, including Fascism  Totalitarianism – says that the Dictator is God  Saddam Hussein was a student of Marxist Communism and of Hitler and Nazism

What Are the Ideologies We Battle Against with Sound Doctrine? Secular Humanism  Secular Humanism – says that man is God  Does not either believe in God (atheist) or does not care about God (agnostic)  Secular Humanism is listed in the dictionary as a religion  By saying there is no God they turn man into a god and make themselves gods, breaking one of the ten commandments, “Thou shalt have no other God before me.” (Exodus)  The American Humanist Association founded in 1941 (beginning of World War II) has a “Humanist Manifesto” with periodic updates

How Do Battle Against These Ideologies?  By knowing “sound doctrine” of the Bible we can defeat these attacks on Christ, on Christianity, and Christians  We must not be weak, but we must build on a solid foundation – line upon line, and precept upon precept  Jesus Christ is the Chief Cornerstone and is our firm foundation  The Word of God is a double-edge sword  We must be ready to defend what we believe

How Do Battle Against These Ideologies? Eph. 4:14 “That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the slight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive.” In other words – “Stop being spiritual babies, grow up! And do not be tricked by every false doctrine that is led by cunning people waiting to trick you!” By being diligent students of the Word and seeking God we can be protected from Satan’s attacks! We also can defend our faith from attack.
