2 1 Samuel 10:1-6 Samuel executes the office of prophet and took a vial of oil and poured it over (anointed) Saul’s head. Heretofore, only objects and holy priests were anointed. Now God shifts His attention to this secular leader of Israel and anoints Him for duty. The Holy Spirit was equipping him for his ministry as king over Israel. Samuel kissed Saul to indicate his personal devotion and affection for him as king. Samuel kissed Saul to indicate his personal devotion and affection for him as king. Samuel tells Saul that he is doing this because the Lord has anointed you king over Israel (captain over My inheritance). 3 What is the significance of ‘Anointing Oil’? To anoint means to rub or sprinkle on or to apply an oily liquid to. To anoint means to rub or sprinkle on or to apply an oily liquid to. 4 Saul’s Anointing Was Done Secretly…Why? A true anointing is done in private, not openly or flashy. Apostle Paul was anointed on a dirt road. David was pulled off the job and anointed as king. Gideon was anointed in a bath tub. Jeremiah and John the Baptist were anointed in the womb. A true anointing is done in private, not openly or flashy. Apostle Paul was anointed on a dirt road. David was pulled off the job and anointed as king. Gideon was anointed in a bath tub. Jeremiah and John the Baptist were anointed in the womb. Saul’s head was drenched in oil, it was poured, not dabbed as we do. Representative of the fact that an anointing was messy, it runs down the head, down the beard and catches in the hem of the garment. Representative of the fact that an anointing was messy, it runs down the head, down the beard and catches in the hem of the garment. You receive your true anointing in private, in your prayer closet. God will manifest it openly for others to see. A truly anointed person does not announce themselves as such, they don’t have to. God has the megaphone, He will make the announcement on your behalf as He reveals Himself in the services you perform on His behalf. You receive your true anointing in private, in your prayer closet. 5 Prophetic Sign or Validation #1 “When you have departed from me today, you will find two men by Rachel’s tomb in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say to you, ‘The donkeys which you went to look for have been found. And now your father has ceased caring about the donkeys and is worrying about you, saying, “What shall I do about my son?” “When you have departed from me today, you will find two men by Rachel’s tomb in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say to you, ‘The donkeys which you went to look for have been found. And now your father has ceased caring about the donkeys and is worrying about you, saying, “What shall I do about my son?” The first place Saul was to confirm his office was at the tomb of Rachel – Saul’s ancestral grandmother, the mother of his ancestral father, Benjamin. The crown of Jacob laid in the dust, Rachel, but through her, the crown of Jacob would be resurrected through one of her sons. The symbolic interpretation is that the Lord’s anointing of Saul would raise the crown of Rachel in the valley of the shadow of her death. 6 Prophetic Sign or Validation #2 When you get to the (plain) of Tabor, you will see three men coming toward you who are on their way to worship God at Bethel. Saul has received much at the hand of the Lord, he is to remember the Lord’s charity and almsgiving to him and be just as merciful to His inheritance. To whom much is given, much is required. 7 Prophetic Sign or Validation # 3 Afterwards, Saul will meet a company of prophets on their way to the hill or high place of God, which is near a Philistine encampment, with musical instruments, praising and magnifying God. They will be prophesying. We receive our anointing privately, but God will manifest it openly upon his timing. When Jesus breathed {anointed them with His breath (ruach) (spirit)} on the disciples, they were filled with the Holy Spirit 50 days on Pentecost. He knew the process for their anointing was incomplete. Tarry here, wait for the power to manifest. 8 #3 Cont’d. Gibeah (hill of God) belonged to the country of Benjamin. There was a school of the prophets located there. There was also an enemy encampment there. The Gibeah company of prophets were strategically placed there to keep the enemy bound to his own territory. The prophets made so much noise praising and blessing God that the Philistines dared to cross over into Gibeah to attack Benjamin, the smallest tribe! The prophets were prophesying. It does not mean that they were sharing dreams and visions, nor that they were predicting future events. They were speaking under Divine influence. Whether they were encouraging someone, giving instruction, correction, rebuke, warning, etc. they were speaking as the Spirit gave them the words to say. 1 Cor. 14:3, they were edifying, exhorting, and comforting. 9 What was Samuel’s School (College) of Prophets? These were people dedicated and devoted to studying the Word of God, prayed incessantly, preached the Word, praised the Lord regularly, not weekly, and worshiped the Lord in song (psalm). 10 1 Samuel 10:7-8 God arranged for each of the three signs to confirm Saul’s mandate. God arranged for each of the three signs to confirm Saul’s mandate. God then releases Saul to do whatever he finds his hands to do. We should never proceed to do a work for the Lord without His spirit nor His bidding. Samuel tells Saul go on ahead of wait for him in Gilgal (wheel or rolling) to come and make sacrifices unto God. Even though God anointed Saul as king over Israel, he had not displaced Samuel as prophet and priest. Samuel tells Saul go on ahead of wait for him in Gilgal (wheel or rolling) to come and make sacrifices unto God. Even though God anointed Saul as king over Israel, he had not displaced Samuel as prophet and priest. Saul needed to understand that his secular authority over Israel was no comparison to Samuel’s spiritual authority over Israel. Saul was to submit to Samuel. God’s anointed always has more authority than God appointed (many are called, but few are chosen). 11 1 Samuel 10:9-11 As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart, all the signs he received were brought to pass. As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart, all the signs he received were brought to pass. God gave Saul a spirit of love, power, and a sound mind. 12 What is the irony in Saul’s Public Prophesying? The school of the prophet was near his house, yet he had never had any contact with them. Did he despise them? Could this be why his friends were so astonished to see him acting like them? The school of the prophet was near his house, yet he had never had any contact with them. Did he despise them? Saul was not a religious person and now he is preaching in the streets. He didn’t even know who Samuel was. 13 1 Samuel 10:12-16 “Who is their father?” “Who is their father?” Is God not the source of all inspiration? Are His gifts limited? Is God not the source of all inspiration? Are His gifts limited? Whenever they found a bad person becoming good, they will use the proverb, is Saul among the prophets?
