Introduction Read Mt.27:3-10; Acts 1:18; all refer to Zech.11:13 –WHY?
God’s challenge to false religions to prophecy fulfilled in v.25ff V.25-29 = God gives a near-term prophecy of CYRUS Ch.42 = God Gives a FAR-TERM prophecy of the “Servant”. Is.41
Is. 44:7 * God’s way of authenticating scripture: See Is.41:22-29; 45:21; 46:8-10; 48:3-5 * Other “popular symbols”: x D All these refs lead back to here!
Acts 17 LIT: “Working hard at length” LIT: “Placing Before” – We need to give evidence in our whitnessing. Katagellow: “evangelism” lit “strongly announcing” (ala Rom.1:16) People give in gradually (1Cor.5:11)
Gen. 3:15 A CAPSULATION OF HUMAN HISTORY: God’s work of Redemption through Eve’s descendant, Satans attempts to destroy God’s work. Mankind, Satan at war! Serpent = proper name of devil, not a “snake”: v.14 laguage figureative; snakes don’t “eat dust”; means “defeated” See Is. 49:23; Ps. 72:9; Mic. 7:16,17 Conci: The proper name by which he was known to Eve (Rev.12:10) Thus v.14 curse appies to Satan; le., aitho he’s highest, he’ll be lowest v.15 sketches how this judgement will take place: a descendant of Eve. BUT: Only 1 of Eve’s Descendants. LIT: “Crush” Head (NASB) = Col. 2:15 “bruise” heel = non-fatal = @ cross
Gen. 12:3 And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed." See also Gen.18:18 Shiloh prophecied to fulfill this in Gen. 49:10
Gen 49:10 "The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes, And to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.” From the Kingly Line Means “Peace” – see NASB “to whom it [peace] belongs” Cf. Is. 9:7; 49:6; Zech. 9:10
2 Samuel 7:13-14 “He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. "I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; when he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and the strokes of the sons of men” Promise is “thwarted” in Jer. 22:18; see Mt/Lk. Chronology comparisons for resolution. Fulfilled in v.15 via Solomon. v.16 is the Christ POINTS: A) Through a Kingly Line B) UNCONDITIONAL
Psalm 2 Mankind rebels God regathers… Method of regathering… Mt.3:17 The only response. Same Person
Psalms 22 Overview Suffering – from General to Specific –V.1-5 Rejected by God –V.6-10 Rejected by Jews –V.11-18 Crucified by the Gentiles Salvation – v19-31
Psalms 22 Incidentals V.6 “The People” = Israelites V8. Apparently, made bold claims about He & God = SARCASM. V9 “Bring me forth from the womb” = Virgin birth? V9 Special relationship of trust & closeness since birth: (NOT David’s case, see Ps.51:5) V15 “Dust of death” – DIES: David never did this way V16 “pierced” – See NASB note #2, Masoretic text rendering, but LXX (200 BC) has “pierced”. HEB:KRW
Psalms 45 “Kingly Psalm” Apparently the King is God Himself: –v.6 “Thy throne, Oh God…” –V.7 “Therefore God, thy God, has annointed thee..” –V. 11 “The King…is your Lord…”
Psalms 89 Davidic Covenant Expounded V.4 “I will establish your seed forever” –Repeated v.28, 33-37 Unconditional –See also Is. 9:6; 2 Sam. 7:12
Psalm 110 Kingly Messiah Priest V.1 “The LORD says to My Lord…” –Since David IS King, aside from Yaweh, who’s David’s Lord? V.1-7 Describe this one’s authority and absolute rulership V.4 “will not change his mind” = Unconditional –“priest forever” PROBLEM: Priests were Levites, Kings are from Judah; cf 2 Chron. 26:16-18. This person is both. 2 Chron. 26:16-18 But when he became strong, his heart was so proud that he acted corruptly, and he was unfaithful to the Lord his God, for he entered the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense. Then Azariah the priest entered after him and with him eighty priests of the Lord, valiant men. They opposed Uzziah the king and said to him, "It is not for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the Lord, but for the priests, the sons of Aaron who are consecrated to burn incense. Get out of the sanctuary, for you have been unfaithful and will have no honor from the Lord God."
Isaiah 7 Backgr: 2 Chron. 28:16 Ahaz & Assyrians forming a coalition. V.3ff Isaiah’s Message: –V6 Davidic line threatened: becomes Isaiah’s focus to “house of Davide” message in v.13,14 –V9 “Ie, Believe in God, not man!” = thrust –V.11 God offers proof for trusting in Him. –V.12 Ahaz displays false humility, actually doesn’t want to listen to God’s msg. –V13 Rebuked for forming coalition, having alternative plans in place. –V14 Sign given to House of David (v13,2) to console re: v.6 threat. –V.15 Impoverished times, don’t come about until after v.16 destruction (cf. v22 curds & hoey) –V16 2 Kings = Syria & Israel, destroyed 4 yrs after Hezekiah becomes King (2Ki.18:9)
Isaiah 7 Issues Liberals reject Messianic interpretation: 1.Virgin (HEB: “alaman” can mean “young maiden” 2.Sign was given contemporary with Ahaz (v11) Response: –#2 rejected because the sign was refused by Ahaz; so Is. Gives it to the House of Davide instead (v13) –#2 isn’t true, because this child would not be a contemporary of Ahaz. –#1 “Alaman” is the closest Heb. Word to “virgin”. LXX Translates “virgin” – GK: “partheonos”). –#1 is absurd because there’s no “sign” here, no miracle, no proof of God’s hand.
Is. 9:6 Virgin birth v.1,2 talks about the Galileean ministry of Christ –Zeb & Napth were shafted by land allotments: 1st to be conquered, but will be made up because they’ll be the 1st to see the Messiah –V.1 Christ’s Galillean Ministry –V2 they’re the first ones to get the light V.2,3 Gap appears inbetween: 2 comings of Christ. –proof: Mat. 4:15,16 says so. –V.5,7 Millenial Kingdom (v5 end of wars) –V.3-5 are true because of v6-7 –V.6 The reason for the “joy” in v.2ff –V6 “government” see also 10:20-1 = Millenial Promise –V.7 Davidic Covenant. see John 7:41,42 (Applic: Deliberate hardness of heart on Pharasee’s part) –(cf Micah 5:2) POINT: passage teaches his humanity and deity
Is. 11 V1 “Stem of Jesse” Jesse was David’s father. V2 “spirit of the lord…” repeated Is.42:1; 48:16; 61:1 –Will be a prophet-King –“spirit of wisdom…understanding” describes HS role –V.3-5 2 nd Advent described –V11 At the time of the regathering of Israel (1948)
Is. 42 – Messianic Ministry Context: “Distant” M.K. prophecy given to support 41:25-29 assertions V1-4 Addressed to all nations –V1 “uphold” = unconquerable –“delights” cf Ps.2:7,2 –V1 “spirit” = prophet/king –V.1 “justice” NOT fulfilled by Israel. –V2 Not seeking publicity (Mt. 12:18ff; also Zech 9:9; Mt. 21:5) “Silent Coming” –V3 Upholds oppressed (cf Is. 61:1ff, also Mt. 11:28-30) –V.4 =1 st Clue He’ll suffer bringing all this about. –V.4b “established justice” ie, MK. –V.4c “coastlands” = distant lands v.5-9 Addressed to Servant –V.6 “righteousness” doesn’t describe Israel –6b “covenant” = a new covenant bringer. –6c “light” = Revelation of God (Is.9:2) –V.7 repeated in Is.61:1ff – SPIRITUALLY blind –V9b ie, hasn’t come about at time of prophecy
Is. 49 – Savior Rejected by Israel V1 “Islands” = “coastlands” = gentiles 1b “from the whomb” cf 46:3b; 49:5 1c “mother” Significant: Servant, OT messianic passages never refer to FATHER as parent. 2a “sword” Speaks convictingly Rev. 1:16; Heb 4:12 2b “arrow” = far-ranging effects V3 reveals G’s glory V4 apparently fails (crucifixion) – (see v.7) yet still trusts V5 womb = virgin birth V5 “bring Jacob back” = critical mission of the Servant (and why he can’t be Israel) V6 Servant & Israel= 2 entities “light to nations” = fulfills Gen.12:3 V6c Is “source of salvation” V7 “despised one” = Is.53:3 V7 “the nation” rejects him = Israel (& thus why servant isn’t Israel) V7b “Servant” is identified GAP inbetween v7 & 8 V8 Future prophecy after v7a is accomplished V8 “covenant” = Covenant Maker (cf 42:6) 8ff = MK description
Is. 50 Suffering Servant V4 “me” = Servant v10 V4 “tongues…” LIT “instructed tongue” means discipled by God (Jn.17:7-8; cf 4D, 5) V4 “my ear” spoken to directly by God (Jn. 5:19,30; 8:28) V5 “disobedient” Righteous, obedient: NOT ISRAEL. V6 “I gave…” voluntary submission of servant to suffering: Israel NEVER did (cf John 10:18) V6 “pluck…spitting” happened at crucifixion
Is. 53 Most Significant Suffering Servant Passage Psg begins 52:13-35, a prolog V13 “will prosper” speaking in future, after v14ff sufferings V14 “astonished” at crucifixion, sufferings V14 “marred…” physical tortchure (50:6) V14 “beyond…any man…” ie, beyond human likeness (“form”) V15 “sprinkle” synonymous with purification – as a result of v14 GAP begins: V15b “…Kings” V15 “not been told” = the “mystery”; or Gentiles hadn’t heard before (Zech 12:10) Chapter 53 –V1 “Who…” ie, few would believer (Jews) tho they heard –V1 “our” speaker = believing Jews –V1 “arm” = God’s saving powers (51:9; 52:10) –V2 “before Him” Known by God, unkown by man (50:4) –V2 “shoot” or root? (Is.11:1) –V2 “parched” the Poverty & misery of Nazareth –“no stately form” Doesn’t look like a Kingly messiah; only a carpenter –V3 “forsaken” = rejected, which caused grief (Lk.19:41), thus a “man of sorrows” –V3 “despised” concl of Jews of the day
Is 53 Cont’d V4 “Surely…” What was really going on was v4ff substitutionary death. V4 “smitten of God” – it was obvious God was judging Him (Mt.12:24) V5 “Pierced” (Ps.22; Zech 12:10) at cross V5 “our transgressions” substitution V5 “well being…” Peac w/ God Rom. 5:1 V6 “all of us…” Total depravity of Man V6 “each of us…”: we’re responsible V7 “did not open…” patient through mistreatment, willingly suffers (Is.50:5) V7 “lamb” Jn. 1:29 V8 “taken away” Dies via judgement V8 “for the transgression” Substitutionary death V9 “wicken men” died a criminal’s death V9 “with a rich man” see Mt.27:57- 60; not buried like a criminal V10 Again, substitutionary death V10 “offspring” = Christians V10 “prolong days” = resurrection, comes back to life V11,12 Justification & intercession
Is. 61 V1: there are 2 persons: Spirit of the Lord God & “Me” V8 1 st person = God, no break in Context; therefore the trinity, or at least a duality
Why Two Servants? Both servants are carrying out God's plan of redemption on earth Isaiah is a book re: judgement of God's 1st servant (Jacob); –Intermixed is description of 2nd servant (who completes the task) You can't sell this message easily to an unbelieving Jew because the key to interpreting is the NT.
Micah 5 Background: writing 700’s bc., in Judah, predicting N.,S., conquests Ch.4:1 Break: “The last days” –1-8 = millenial kingdom –9 Jews need a king to usher this in (ie., Christ) –10 Going to Babylon first 4:11—5:1 returns to last days discussion and war –5:1 “Muster” means get ready to fight; “smite judge” is enemy’s plan –5:2—5 this is when the promised king will arrive leads to victory v.3 “she in labor” is Israel (c.4:10) distressed until arrival of King v.3 “his bretheren” = messiah’s brethren v.4 “they will remain” = reversal of v.3a “He will give them up...” cf.Zech.12:10 “they will look on him whom they have pierced” at 2nd advent APPLICATION OF PASSAGE: –Comes from Bethlehem; (Mt.2:6) –Clearly teaching a pre— existence to birth; CONCL: more than human! –Contrasts his lowly emergence (Bethlehem) and beginnings (days of old)
Zech 9 v.1—7 Predicts alexander’s conquest of Tyre (Ez.26) and Philistia. v.8 predicts God providentially sparing Israel –History: Jews showed Alexander the Daniel prophecies regarding him, and be left them alone Break at end of v.8 “Any more... –oppressors did pass thru after Alexander! eq., Romans –it’s because he’s “seen with my eyes. What did he see? v.9,10 v.9 = humble, suffering servant v.10 = the anticipated king which had been propbecied Mic.5:2; Is.9, etc Jewish interpretation –They’ve always looked at this as messianic passage –these are 2 different pictures of Messiah –It depended on wether tbey’re sinful as a nation or not as to which one they get.
Zech 11 v.4 Zech. asked to play role of shepherd –other prophets having to play act: Isaiah naked 3 yrs; Hosaih married whore –v.4—6 soon to be diaspora v.7 favor, Union interpreted speculatively –union = internal unity –favor = external protection v.8 Three shepherds = priest, propbet, king OT offices replaced by Shepherd –OR: pbarisees, saducees, priests rejected him, he annihilated their offices 7 0ad v.9,10 Israel’s shepherd rejects them because tbey reject him (v.8) –God temporarily suspended protection v.11,12 people watching his little play give him 30 pcs. of silver v.13 And indication the shepherd is God “I was valued”, yet Zech played it –the potter = “Smelting Pot” (LXX) or “Low Class of people” (Feinberg) –30 pcs. = price of a slave gored to death (Ex.21:32) v.15 “foolish” or “worthless” shepherd, as contrasted to “good” one in v.4 –Feinberg interprets as antichrist –ie., since they rejected the one who did care for them, I’ll give them someon who doesn’t care for them
