Types of Leads Strong Question (not yes/no) Summary (pair with strong question) Snapshot (word picture) Important Observation Fun Fact or Unusual Detail

Gandhi Prompt "The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong." I will show you examples of leads on the screen. I want you to give me two thumbs up if the lead is engaging and does not need to be adjusted. Give me one thumb up if the lead could be improved.

Lead Examples Living in the world people do today, forgiveness has lost it's place in society. People hold grudges, and therefore, it makes people weak emotionally. So, as Gandhi says, forgiveness makes people strong.

Is it the weak or the strong that can't forgive? If you're weak you can't do anything. If you're strong you can do everything.

People that forgive are more likely to grow mentally than people that don't. People that are strong will always be forgiving, and they will never hold grudges. Weak people will never forgive as easily, because they hold hate for others.

Remember that girl you hate, that ex boyfriend, or even that old best friend? You have grudges against them, so, forgiving them sounds a tad insane.

How many times has a human being crossed his fellow man? How many times has blood been shed in light of revenge? How much blood has been spared in light of strength?

Two-Part Thesis *You need both a subordinating clause and an independent clause. Subordinating Clause = Counter Argument Independent Clause = Your Position HINT: The independent clause is stronger because it can stand on its own.

Argument Essay Writing Prompt: Should people receive a reward for charity? Two-Part Thesis Statement: Although some people expect a reward for their charitable acts, one should do benevolent things for others out of the kindness of their hearts, and the reward should be a clean conscience, not an incentive.

Photography Prompt Introduction How can someone catch a special moment and keep it forever? A picture is worth a thousand words. Susan Sontag asserts that photography is deceptive and falsely represents ideas. Although some people may believe that photographs divulge misconceptions about the world, a photograph can benefit society by preserving memories, history, and scientific discoveries.

Argument Prompt “Cautious, careful people, always casting about to preserve their reputation and social standing, never can bring about a reform. Those who are really in earnest must be willing to be anything or nothing in the world's estimation, and publicly and privately, in season and out, avow their sympathy with despised and persecuted ideas and their advocates, and bear the consequences.” -- Susan B. Anthony Consider this quotation about reform from suffragist Susan B. Anthony. Write an essay that defends, challenges, or qualifies Anthony’s assertion about her approach to bringing about change. Support your argument with appropriate evidence from your reading, observation, or experience.
