4 V OTING M ATTERS : F OR Y OUR O RGANIZATION Community organizations are “trusted messengers” and have established credibility, trust and access to disengaged voters. Voter engagement deepens relationships. Voter engagement provides opportunities to invite our clients to take part in a positive and important process. Nonprofits are the “sleeping giants” of the democratic process.

5 V OTING M ATTERS : I MPROVED H EALTH O UTCOMES A patient’s perceived sense of being able to influence his or her own life is linked to better health outcomes in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, HIV, and other chronic diseases. (Alvy, 2010) People who vote are more likely to follow issues, volunteer, and engage friends and family members. (Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement, 2008). Increase in voter registration linked with decreased unemployment. (CIRCLE, 2012) Detroit study found correlation between increased civic participation and a decrease in depression. (National Civic Review, 2010)

6 Traditional health advice promotes a balanced diet and moderate exercise… Now we can add VOTING to that list! Psychologist Marc Zimmerman, professor at the University of Michigan’s School of Health, says part of the overall picture of health is to “learn how you can empower yourself so you have some control over the things in life that are under your control, such as voting.”

9 N ATIONAL V OTER R EGISTRATION A CT In 1993, the Congress passed the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA). Known as the “Motor-Voter” Act. Deems “Public Assistance” agencies legally bound to provide voter registration. Under the NVRA, Health Benefit Exchanges are entities that administer public assistance, and, as such are required to incorporate voter registration services into operation of Insurance Affordability Programs
