The Lion in Winter By James Goldman Directed by Bill Clayten A Zazen Production
About The Producer/Director Producer and director Bill Clayten is more than familiar with modern and contemporary theatre. He had his first taste of a non-traditional stage in 1998 when he traveled with his college performance of Samuel Beckett’s Endgame to the Regional College Theatre Festival. While there, he placed as an Irene Ryan Nominee for his portrayal of Clov. His producer/directorial debut was with a stage adaptation of Trey Parker’s (South Park co-creator) Cannibal: The Musical. Bill followed that up with the hard-hitting Zoo Story by Edward Albee. He has since gone on to direct Happy Days by Samuel Beckett and WASP by Steve Martin. Through the production label of Zazen Productions, Bill hopes to share his passion for modern theatre with James Goldman’s The Lion In Winter. With hard work, *Zazen Productions intends to produce modern/contemporary theatre and cult-classic stage shows. His goal, ultimately, is to entertain with uncensored, professional quality performances and to promote local businesses within the community. *zazen – sitting meditation as practiced by Zen Buddhists.
About The Play King Henry II allows Queen Eleanor, whom he has long imprisoned, to join the family's Christmas festivities at which he is determined to select an heir. He favors their youngest son, John, but Eleanor favors the eldest, Richard. Because of the love-hate relationships they share with each other and their three remaining sons, tensions mount over heated, and often humorous, augments and fights. The Lion In Winter shows us that even the most powerful of families have problems; that the most broken of families share a complicated bond. In 1966, James Goldman (1927-1998) wrote this fictitious telling of the personal and political struggles of the English King. Two years later, it was re-written by Goldman for the silver screen. The movie starred Peter O’Toole, Katharine Hepburn, and Anthony Hopkins.
Sponsorship Opportunities It’s simple: art represents and serves the community. Good heart-felt theatre has its costs. Then again, so does well placed advertisement. Advertisement in our program has the potential to reach hundreds of people here in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Our show is designed for a shoe-string budget, so large funds aren’t even necessary to produce this work of art. With a small donation, an advertisement of your choosing will be strategically placed in our printed program and on our websites. You will also received a special thanks in our director’s speech and, of course, free tickets to our production of James Goldman’s The Lion In Winter.
