God’s 3 Major Promises Promise in Eden Promise in Eden Promise to Abraham Promise to Abraham Promise to David Promise to David

Why are these promises important? “…[God] has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, in order that by them you might become partakers of divine nature having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.” 2 Peter 1: 4 NASB

Summary of the Promises No FUTURE David's Descendent or Seed A Throne & Kingdom FOREVER 3. To David No FUTURE Abraham's Descendent or Seed The land (whole world) FOREVER 2. To Abraham Yes. AD 33 "The Seed of the Woman" Victory over Sin & Death (open the way for our salvation) 1. In Eden Fulfilled? Who?What?Promise The First Words of the New Testament: Matt 1: 1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Jesus Christ

Romans 15:8 Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister …. for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers

Promise in Eden Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between you (serpent) and the woman, And I will put enmity between you (serpent) and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel. " And you shall bruise him on the heel. "

CONFLICT The Promise of Redemption Genesis 3:15

The Mind of Flesh vs. The Mind of Spirit “ For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.” Romans 8:5 “ For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.” Romans 8:5 “ because the fleshly mind is enmity against God…” Romans 8:7 Serpent = the thinking of the flesh

Seed of the Woman = Jesus Christ “ But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law " (Galatians 4:4) “ He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed " (Isaiah 53:5)

“God sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh ” (Romans 8:3) How did Jesus Destroy the Serpent? The Battle was won in Christ’s Body

How did Jesus Destroy the Serpent? Hebrews 2:14 “Since then the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same (nature), that through death He might render powerless (destroy) him who had the power of death, that is, the devil” 1.Jesus was born with exactly the same nature as us 2.But he never sinned 3.1 & 2 meant that when he died on the cross he was able to destroy the devil What is the Devil that Jesus Destroyed?

What is the Devil that Jesus Destroyed when he died on the cross? Hebrews 2:14 “Since then the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same (nature), that through death He might render powerless (destroy) him who had the power of death, that is, the devil” Hebrews 9:26 “But now he (Jesus) has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. Romans 8:3 “… God … sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering … he condemned sin in sinful man

Devil = human nature sinful human nature our sin-prone nature our sin-prone nature

“ The sting of death is sin ; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. ” (1 Cor 15:56-57) (1 Cor 15:56-57) Enmity between the Serpent’s seed and the Woman’s seed

Two parties would be involved They would be enemies The conflict will finally be resolved by a great victory when Jesus dies Promise in Eden: Summary

Adam vs. Christ “For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous” Romans 5:19

God’s Promises to Abraham

Abram’s Journey from UR God called Abram out of Ur of the Chaldees, from the land of Shinar, where his family served other gods.

 Babylon  Ur - birthplace of Abraham Modern Iraq

Abram’s Journey from UR God made His first promise to Abram before he left Ur of the Chaldees.

Abram’s Journey from UR Genesis 12:1 Now the LORD had said to Abram: "Get out of your country, From your family And from your father's house, to a land that I will show you. 2 I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."

Abram’s Journey from UR God made His Second promise to Abram after he came into the land of Canaan.

Abram’s Journey from UR Genesis 12:6 Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, as far as the terebinth tree of Moreh. And the Canaanites were then in the land. 7 Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your descendants I will give this land." And there he built an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him. Abram was 75 years old.

God made His third promise to Abram in the land, after he parted company from his nephew Lot.

Genesis 13:14 And the LORD said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: "Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are--northward, southward, eastward, and westward; 15 for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever. 16 And I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth; so that if a man could number the dust of the earth, then your descendants also could be numbered. 17 Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you."

God made His fourth & fifth promise to Abram while he and Sarai remained childless.

Genesis 15:5 Then He brought him outside and said, "Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them." And He said to him, "So shall your descendants be." 6 And he believed in the LORD, and He accounted it to him for righteousness. 7 Then He said to him, "I am the LORD, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to inherit it."

Genesis 15:18 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, "To your descendants I have given this land, From the river of Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates: [NASB]

From the river of Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates

God made His sixth promise to Abram when He changed his name to Abraham and changed Sarai’s name to Sarah. The token of circumcision was also given to Abraham at this time.

Genesis 17:1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him ….. 5 No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations…. 8 Also I give to you and your descendants after you the land in which you are a stranger, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession; and I will be their God."

God made His seventh promise to Abraham after the faithful offering of his son Isaac.

Genesis 22:15 Then the Angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time out of heaven, 16 and said: "By Myself I have sworn, says the LORD, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son 17 blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. 18 In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice."

In Abraham's seed all nations of the earth blessed Like the stars in heaven and sand on the sea- shore 22:15 7 Father of many nationsThe land of Canaan - everlasting possession 17:1-8 6 "to your seed"From river of Egypt to river Euphrates 15:18 5 "like the stars in heaven""inherit this land"15:5-7 4 "to you and your seed"All the land.. I will give forever" 13:14 3 "to your seed""I will give this land"12:6 2 In Abraham all families of the earth be blessed" "make you a great nation" go to a land (Canaan)12:1-3 1 BLESSINGDESCENDENT(S) SEED LAND Genesis

ALL Nations BlessedWho? Israel BLESSING DESCENDENT(S) SEED LAND Inherit Forever Promise Extended to a large section of the Middle East: Gen15:18 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, "To your descendants I have given this land, From the river of Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates: Initially promised the land of Canaan or Israel: Gen13:14 And the LORD said to Abram.. " Now lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward; for all the land which you see, I will give it to you and to your descendants forever. From Nile River to Euphrates River The New Testament Extends this to the WHOLE WORLD: Rom 4:13 For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith. Whole World

“The promise to Abraham…. Heir of the World” (Rom. 4:17)

ALL Nations Blessed BLESSING DESCENDENT(S) SEED LAND Inherit Forever Extends to all those who believe and are baptized into Christ: Gal 3:27-29 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's offspring (seed), heirs according to promise” Primarily Refers to Jesus Christ Gal 3:16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, "And to seeds," as [referring] to many, but [rather] to one, "And to your seed," that is, Christ. Whole World Jesus Christ All those “in” Christ Who?

ALL Nations Blessed BLESSING SEED LAND Inherit Forever The Gospel Consists of 2 important elements: Acts 8:12 “But when they believed Philip preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were being baptized, men and women alike.” Abraham understood the Gospel Gal 3:8 “And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, [saying], "ALL THE NATIONS SHALL BE BLESSED IN YOU." Whole World Jesus Christ All those “in” Christ = the Gospel (good news) = 1) Kingdom of God 2) Name of Jesus

ALL Nations Blessed BLESSING SEED LAND Inherit Forever Whole World Jesus Christ All those “in” Christ The Gospel (God’s good news for us) 1. Kingdom of God 2. Name of Jesus Christ “He that believes the gospel and is baptized shall be saved” Mark 16:16

Has Abraham Received God’s Promise? God promised Abraham “all the land which you see, I will give it to you (Abraham) and to your descendants (Jesus Christ & those in him) forever.” (Gen.13:14-15) However, Abraham has NOT yet received this promise: Acts 7:4-5 “[God] removed him (Abraham) into this country in which you are now living. And He gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot of ground; and [yet] …He promised that HE WOULD GIVE IT TO HIM” Acts 7:4-5 “[God] removed him (Abraham) into this country in which you are now living. And He gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot of ground; and [yet] …He promised that HE WOULD GIVE IT TO HIM” Hebrews 11:8-13 “ By faith Abraham.. obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; … By faith he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a foreign [land], dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, fellow heirs of the same promise…. These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off…” Hebrews 11:8-13 “ By faith Abraham.. obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; … By faith he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a foreign [land], dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, fellow heirs of the same promise…. These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off…”

God will fulfill His Promise to Abraham when Jesus returns Matt 22:31-32 "But regarding the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God: (32) 'I AM THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.“ Matt 22:31-32 "But regarding the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God: (32) 'I AM THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.“ 1 Corinthians 15:20-23 But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. (21) For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. (22) For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. (23) But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, after that those who are Christ's at His coming ” 1 Corinthians 15:20-23 But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. (21) For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. (22) For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. (23) But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, after that those who are Christ's at His coming ” Abraham, along with all those believers “in Christ”, will be resurrected
