Peter and the Believer’s Inheritance III

Some Introductory Life Principles 1.The Christian Life is Counter-Intuitive this side of the Fall. 2.Tonight’s Example: Get happy about suffering. – Two words we’ll focus on: Rejoice and Receive 3.Principles of the Word of God correlate together perfectly, and God will use them to form categories in your soul of absolute truth concerning total reality. – Two doctrines concerning the Christian life intersect in 1 Peter 3: Inheritance and Testing.

1 Pet 1:3-5: The Basis for vv6-9 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,Who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead 4 unto an inheritance which is incorruptible and undefiled and unfading, having been guarded in heaven for you, 5 who are being shielded by the power of God through faith unto the salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

6 In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, 7 so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 8 and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, 9 obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls.

You Rejoice, but the Tests Hurt 6 Ἐ ν ᾧ ἀ γαλλι ᾶ σθε, ὀ λ ί γον ἄ ρτι, ε ἰ δ έ ον ἐ στ ί ν, λυπηθ έ ντες ἐ ν ποικ ί λοις πειρασμο ῖ ς, In which you all are greatly rejoicing, a little while, if it is necessary after/though having been grieved by many kinds of tests

The Tests Have a Purpose 7 ἵ να τ ὸ δοκ ί μιον ὑ μ ῶ ν τ ῆ ς π ί στεως πολ ὺ τιμι ώ τερον χρυσ ί ου το ῦ ἀ πολλυμ έ νου, δι ὰ πυρ ὸ ς δ ὲ δοκιμαζομ έ νου, ε ὑ ρεθ ῇ ε ἰ ς ἔ παινον κα ὶ τιμ ὴ ν κα ὶ ε ἰ ς δ ό ξαν ἐ ν ἀ ποκαλ ύ ψει Ἰ ησο ῦ χριστο ῦ · In order that (expressing purpose of the grievous testing) the proof of your faith— much more valuable than gold which is perishing, but through fire being tested— that it may be found to result in praise and honor and unto glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

The Joy Focuses on a Person 8 ὃ ν ο ὐ κ ε ἰ δ ό τες ἀ γαπ ᾶ τε, ε ἰ ς ὃ ν ἄ ρτι μ ὴ ὁ ρ ῶ ντες, πιστε ύ οντες δ έ, ἀ γαλλι ᾶ σθε χαρ ᾷ ἀ νεκλαλ ή τ ῳ κα ὶ δεδοξασμ έ ν ῃ, Who though not having seen you love, into Whom now though not seeing but believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and having been glorified

“You Rejoice”: Aggaliaw Jesus: Matthew 5:12 "Rejoice, and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Mary: Luke 1:47 And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. Jesus: Luke 10:21 At that very time He rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, "I praise Thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that Thou didst hide these things from the wise and intelligent and didst reveal them to babes. Yes, Father, for thus it was well-pleasing in Thy sight. Disciples of John the Baptist: John 5:35 "He was the lamp that was burning and was shining and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.

Abraham: John 8:56 "Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad." Peter quoting David: Acts 2:26 'Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue exulted; Moreover my flesh also will abide in hope; The Philippian Jailer: Acts 16:34 And he brought them into his house and set food before them, and rejoiced greatly, having believed in God with his whole household. 1 Peter 1:6 In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, 1 Peter 1:8 and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory,

1 Peter 4:13 but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing; so that also at the revelation of His glory, you may rejoice with exultation. Revelation 19:7 "Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready."

The Test Is Cause for Joy 9κομιζ ό μενοι τ ὸ τ έ λος τ ῆ ς π ί στεως ὑ μ ῶ ν, σωτηρ ί αν ψυχ ῶ ν. Receiving as a recompense the end/goal of your faith, which is the salvation of souls.

What Does “Salvation” Mean? The Key is the word “receive,” KOMIZW. This word always means “receive what is due.” Matthew 25:27 'Then you ought to have put my money in the bank, and on my arrival I would have received my money back with interest. Luke 7:37 And behold, there was a woman in the city who was a sinner; and when she learned that He was reclining at the table in the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster vial of perfume, 2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

Ephesians 6:8 knowing that whatever good thing each one does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether slave or free. Colossians 3:25 For he who does wrong will receive the consequences of the wrong which he has done, and that without partiality. Hebrews 10:36 For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised. Hebrews 11:19 He considered that God is able to raise men even from the dead; from which he also received him back as a type.

Hebrews 11:39 And all these, having gained approval through their faith, did not receive what was promised, 1 Peter 1:9 obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls. 1 Peter 5:4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. 2 Peter 2:13 suffering wrong as the wages of doing wrong. They count it a pleasure to revel in the daytime. They are stains and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions, as they carouse with you,

Summary 1.1 Pet 1:3-9 is one of the clearest passages on God’s design of the Inheritance Package for you. 2.His Plan is your inheritance of all things in Christ. 3.This includes Category 1 Inheritance, like Eternal life, a Resurrection Body, and the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit. 4.The reason for Category 1 Inheritance is so that you can receive and enjoy the conditional rewards of Category 2 Inheritance, the greater blessings of the believer who perseveres with faith through testing to the glory of God. 5.Inheritance is cause for great joy through guaranteed suffering.

6.Unexpectedly, the suffering itself is cause for joy because it is the means by which God prepares you for your greater blessings in the Eternal State.
