Fellowship Many in one Scriptural figures of brothers and sisters in fellowship

Fellowship For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. Rom 12:4-5 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For indeed we were all baptised by one Spirit into one body (whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free) and we were all given one Spirit to drink. For indeed the body is not made up of one part but of many. 1 Cor 12:12-14

Fellowship built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God. Eph 2:19-22 let them make me a sanctuary, so that I may dwell among them Ex 25:8 2 Cor 6:16 we are the temple of the living God; as God said, “I will live and dwell among them”

Fellowship pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” Matt 12:49-50 the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth takes its name Eph 3:14-15

Fellowship I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. John 10:14-16 tend the flock of God that is in your charge, …not for sordid gain but eagerly. Do not lord it over those in your charge, but be examples to the flock. And when the chief shepherd appears, you will win the crown of glory that never fades away. 1 Pet 5:2-4

Fellowship I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5 The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. 1 Cor 10:16-17

Fellowship Many in one

Fellowship v4 diversities of gifts, butthe same Spirit v5 diversities of services, butthe same Lord to another gifts of healingby the one Spirit v9 to another faithby the same Spirit v6 diversities of activities, butthe same God v7 to each is given the manifestationof the Spirit for the common good v8 to one the utterance of wisdom is giventhrough the Spirit to another the utterance of knowledgeby the same Spirit who activates all of them in everyone v10 to another the working of miracles to another prophecy to another the discernment of spirits to another various kinds of tongues to another the interpretation of tongues by one and the same Spirit All these are activated just as the Spirit chooses who allots to each one individually 1 Cor 12 v11

Diversity in unity Fellowship & Many in one

Fellowship Many in one Uniformity

Fellowship Many in one Diversity in unity

Fellowship The body is a unit, yet it is made up of many parts, and although all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. For indeed we were all baptised by one Spirit into one body - whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free - and we were all given one Spirit to drink. For indeed the body is not made up of one part but of many. 1 Cor 12:12-14

Fellowship INDEPENDENCE SUPERIORITY Suppose the foot were to say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it belongs to the body nonetheless. Suppose the ear were to say, “because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it still belongs to the body. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I do not need you,” or the head to the feet, “I do not need you.” 1 Cor 12:15-16 1 Cor 12:21

Fellowship If the body were all eye, how could it hear? If the body were all ear, how could it smell? But in fact, God appointed each limb and organ to its own place in the body as he chose. If the whole were a single organ, there would not be a body at all; in fact, however, there are many different organs, but one body. 1 Cor 12:17-20 VARIETY

Fellowship Those parts of the body which seem to be more frail than others are indispensable, and those parts of the body which we regard as less honourable are treated with special honour. The parts we are modest about are treated with special respect, whereas our respectable parts have no such need. 1 Cor 12:22-24 HONOUR/RESPECT

Fellowship God has combined the various parts of the body, so that there might be no division in the body, but that all its parts might feel the same concern for one another. If one part suffers, all suffer together; if one flourishes, all rejoice together. 1 Cor 12:24-26 MUTUALITY

Fellowship Two models of the community NEEDS-basedASSET-based

Fellowship NEEDS based community development We know what the community should look like We identify what we need in order to look like that We find individuals to fill the positions, to do the duties Community level Personal level Individuals are needy Everyone is/has a problem which must be helped The (few) willing find themselves consumed by helping everybody else

Fellowship ASSET based community development We don’t know what the community should look like We identify what we have – what can we contribute? We provide opportunities for individuals to do what they can Community level Personal level Individuals have talents, gifts Everyone is able to contribute what they are good at and what they love to do Because they are appreciated, everyone is more willing to assist and become involved

Fellowship NEEDS based community development We know what the community should look like We identify what we need in order to look like that We find individuals to fill the positions, to do the duties Community level Personal level Individuals are needy Everyone is/has a problem which must be helped The (few) willing find themselves consumed by helping everybody else DUTY

Fellowship ASSET based community development We don’t know what the community should look like We identify what we have – what can we contribute? We provide opportunities for individuals to do what they can Community level Personal level Individuals have talents, gifts Everyone is able to contribute what they are good at and what they love to do Because they are appreciated, everyone is more willing to assist and become involved JOY

Fellowship vv15-20 many parts make the one body viable vv21-27 the one body makes all the many parts valuable NEEDS-basedASSET-based OR?

Fellowship NEEDS based fellowship problems The head should not say to the foot, “I need you to be a hand,” or the mouth to the ear, “I don’t need any more ears, can you keep watch instead?” UNSUITABILITY The ear wants to cry, “I am not an eye, I cannot see a thing!” and the body sees nothing as it should be seen. RELUCTANCE APATHY The foot says, “Because I am not a hand, I might as well not belong to the body,” and although it belongs in the body it does nothing.

Fellowship NEED based fellowship problems DESPERATION The needs of the many are left to the efforts of the few that remain willing.. DUTY

Fellowship ASSET based fellowship benefits INTERDEPENDENCE RESPECT / APPRECIATION God appointed each limb and organ to its own place in the body as he chose. If one part suffers, all suffer together; if one flourishes, all rejoice together. those parts of the body which we regard as less honourable are treated with special honour. The parts we are modest about are treated with special respect, whereas our respectable parts have no such need.

Fellowship ASSET based fellowship benefits ENTHUSIASM If one flourishes, all rejoice together. JOY

FellowshipJOY We declare to you what we have seen and heard so that you also may have fellowship with us; 1 John 1:3-4 and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that your joy may be complete.
