Strengthening His Family

The Basics for this Class God Wants Us to Become Mature In 3 Areas 1. Time 2. Talent 3. Treasure

The Goal of 201 Discovering Maturity That I will consider committing myself to Christian Maturity.

What Defines Maturity Maturity is defined as the Stewardship of Time: A Daily Time with Him Talent: Weekly Cell Group Treasure: A Monthly Tithe to Him

In This Course We Discover 201 Discovering Maturity 1. God’s Authority 2. God’s Ability 3. God’s Community 4. God’s Goals for Maturity

And We Learn To 201 Discovering Maturity 1. Submit to His Authority 2. Rejoice in His Ability 3. Participate in His Community 4. Multiply in His Mandate

201 Discovering Maturity Welcome to Session 1 Submit to His Authority

The Great Commandment Matt 22: Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'

The Great Commission Matt 28:18-20 "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with a always, to the very end of the age."

The First Principle of Maturity Submit to His Authority

Lordship Leads to Maturity "Matt 7: Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' 23 Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'

Lordship Leads to Maturity John 15: "as the father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 if you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my father's commands and remain in his love.

Lordship Releases to Maturity Matt 8:8-9 8 The centurion replied, "Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."

Lordship Defines Maturity Matt 7: "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' 23 Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'

When You Were A Child John 21: I tell you the truth, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go." 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, "Follow me!"

When I was a Child 1 Cor 13:11 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.

Move on to Maturity Heb 5: We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain because you are slow to learn. 12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.

Move on to Maturity Heb 6:1-3 1 Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, 2 instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3 And God permitting, we will do so.

Attributes of Maturity 2 Peter 1:5-8 5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Maturity Calls Us to Fellowship 1 John 1:5-7 5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

Maturity Releases Friendship John 15: If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love.

Lordship Releases Maturity James 3: Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil.

Maturity Endures Life’s Crosses Heb 12:2-3 2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. (NIV)

Maturity Endures Chastening Heb 12:7 7Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? (NIV)

Connected to the Committed

What Defines Maturity? Stewardship of: Time Talent Treasure

In This Session Participation in His Biblical Community

Discovering Maturity Community begins with a common partaking.

Biblical Community Luke 5:7 7So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. (NIV)

Word #1 Meteko We meet and there is an “echo”.

Biblical Community Partakers of a Holy Calling: Salvation Heb 3:1 1Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess. (NIV)

Biblical Community Partakers of Christ Communion Heb 3:14 14We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first. (NIV)

1 Cor 10:14-17 COMMUNION 14Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry. 15I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. 16Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? 17Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf. (NIV)

Partakers of the Holy Spirit Baptism in the Holy Spirit Heb 6:4-6 Tasted the heavenly gift Shared in the Holy Spirit Tasted the goodness of the Word

Biblical Community Heb 6:4-6 4 It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age, 6if they fall away, to be brought back to repentance, because to their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. (NIV)

Look these up! Acts 2:4 Acts 10:10 Acts 19:1-7

Biblical Community Partakers of God’s Authority Chastening Discipline Heb 12:8 8If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. John 21:23 23Because of this, the rumor spread among the brothers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?" (NIV)

If you “partake” and I “partake” we have “fellowship”.

Biblical Community

We are called by God into the fellowship of His Son Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 Cor 1:9 9God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful. (NIV)

Fellowship is maintained by Maturity. 1 Cor 1:10 10I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought. (NIV)

Fellowship is celebrated by Holy Communion. 1 Cor 10:16 16Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? (NIV)

Fellowship is maintained by Maturity. 1 Cor 11:22 22Don't you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you for this? Certainly not! (NIV)

COSBT The fellowship of the committed: A doring C aring T raining S ending

Biblical Community Fellowship is declared by Light. I Jn 1:3 3We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. (NIV)

Fellowship is maintained by Maturity. I Jn 1:7 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. (NIV)

The Mature share 3 areas of Maturity: Daily time with Jesus Weekly Cell Group Monthly tithe with Jesus

Biblical Community The 3 Strand Cord of Maturity: Releases Meteko Promotes Koinonea Word #2 Brings Fulfillment—Teleos Word #3

Biblical Community Moving on to Maturity Heb 6:1-3 1Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, 2instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3And God permitting, we will do so. (NIV)

Maturity Completes the Task John 4:34 34"My food," said Jesus, "is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. (NIV)

Maturity Glorifies the Father John 5:36 36"I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the very work that the Father has given me to finish, and which I am doing, testifies that the Father has sent me. (NIV)

Maturity Fellowships in the Light John 17:4 4I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. (NIV)

Maturity Empowers Others John 17:23 23I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. (NIV)

Maturity Demonstrates Faith through Action James 2:22 22You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. (NIV)

Maturity is indwelt by the Word of God I Jn 2:5 5But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: (NIV)

Maturity is Perfected in Love I Jn 4:12,17,18 12No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. 17In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him. 18There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. (NIV)
