16The Hobbit Traditional Quest Elements Home, There and Back AgainOne year plus one dayUnderground or cave-like places:Under the Misty MountainsUnder the overhanging branches in MirkwoodIn the dungeons of the ElvesInside the Lonely Mountain with SmaugBattle with DragonHeroic actions: fighting dragon, spiders
17The Hobbit Parallels Trolls and Spiders (disembodied voice trick) Fire promises comfort but it tricks: Trolls, Elves, Smaug is greatest fireCave of Goblins, Gandalf rescues dwarves; Dungeon of Elves, Bilbo rescues dwarvesOften in front door, out back door: Misty Mountains, Elves. Opposite in side door, out front door: Smaug. Out front door of Bag End, back in the same way. “Road Song.”Battle of wits with Gollum and SmaugCaves all remind us of Bilbo’s homeUnusual to see Elves compared with Orcs, but this is from dwarf perspective or at least loyalties.
18The Hobbit Source material BeowolfMuch of description of Smaug in BeowolfBeorn and Bard derivativeName of Beorn a linguistic joke: name comes from bjorn (bear in Scandinavian), warrior or man in Old English“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit”
