Welcome to MyPlastiki You might have read that constructing a boat with 12,500 plastic bottles wasn’t an easy task. But you don’t have to build a plastic catamaran to make a difference. We’re looking for dreamers, curious types, storytellers and most important you! Just let your inner change make or break through, click your mouse, and pledge to better our oceans and planet. The Plastiki Blog Fresh MyPlastiki posts from theplastiki.com theplastiki.com
There is a lot of talk about the Pacific Garbage Patch. The danger of plastics in our oceans. Scientists estimate 1 million sea birds die of plastic pollution every year. How the little pieces of plastic end up in our food chains. Note: A short video David has sent straight from the Pacific Explaining - what prompted him to embark on the Plastiki mission.
The TRUTH needs to be told Plastics Pollutes & Damages our Oceans :
Plastic waste, such as plastic bags, often becomes litter. Nearly 57% of litter found on beaches in 2003 was plastic. The amount of plastic waste generated annually in the UK is estimated to be nearly 3 million tonnes Yearly an estimated 17.5 billion plastic bags are given away by supermarkets. This is over 290 bags for every person in UK. It is estimated that only 7% of total plastic waste arising are currently being recycled. An estimated 14 billion pounds of trash, mostly plastic is dumped in the world's oceans yearly.
Worldwide fishing industry dumps: estimated 150000 tons of plastic into the ocean each year (packaging, plastic nets, lines & buoys). USA & Western Europe account for nearly 80% of plastic bag use - now the bags are common in developing countries as well. 25% of the plastic bags used in wealthy nations are produced in Asia. Each year, Americans throw away some 100 billion polyethylene plastic bags. Only 0.6 % of plastic bags are recycled. During 2006 plastic bottles worth around £50 million were disposed of at a cost of £100 million.
Britain uses about 275,000 tonnes of plastic bottles in their homes every year - that's about 15 million bottles every day. Brits use an estimated 10 billion plastic carrier bags each year. Only 2.5% of plastic bottles are presently recycled in Europe. Americans generate 10.5 million tons of plastic waste a year but recycle about 2 % of it. 11% of household waste is plastic, 40% of which if plastic bottles.
What can we do with this Plastics:- Recycled plastic can be used to make things like trash cans, park benches, playground equipment, decks, and kayaks. 1 tonne = 25,000 plastic bottles. Recycling 1 tonne of plastic bottles saves 1.5 tonne of carbon 25 recycled PET bottles can be used to make an adult's fleece jacket. It is estimated that only 7% of total plastic waste arising are currently being recycled Recycling plastic saves twice as much energy as burning it in an incinerator.
4 R’s (Reuse, Recycle, Reduce & Rethink): Reusing the plastic bottle The whole vessel ‘The Plastiki’ is ultimately recyclable We tried to reduce the materials we used on board and avoided mixing different materials together so they can be re-used. Throughout the Plastiki journey we have been rethinking waste as a resource, and pushing the boundaries of design and construction to incorporate sustainable design.
